The Impact of the Traditional Image In modern day society images play a fundamental role in how people communicate with one another. Images are mass-produced and distributed for all of society to enjoy. Do these images impact society in a positive way? In Christine Rosen’s article “The Image Culture” she argues that images impact society in a negative way. Rosen argues that the mass production of images unconsciously impacts society; people view these images without knowing the negative impacts they have. Kay Hymowitz the author of “Scenes from the Exhibitionists” shares a supporting argument; she discusses how women are exposed far too often because of these mass-produced

In Rosen’s article she emphasizes how mass-produced images are playing a negative role in society; Hymowitz supports this by showing that these images lead to the overexposure of women. Hymowitz discusses how Britney Spears “revealed her waxed nether-regions” (Hymowitz 234), and how there were so many cameras there to capture the moment. Within hours the images of Britney were flooding the internet and were all over social media. Hymowitz argues that images like Britney’s are exploiting women and promoting negative gender roles by displayng women as sexual objects. The mass production of these promiscuous images are used to please society, all the celebrities that Hymowitz mentions are forced to conform to society and as a result are seen as sexual objects. Hymowitz’s argument emphasizes society will mass-produce these images while unconsciously promoting the sexualization of women. Hymowitz is warning women that if they continue to overexpose themselves with these images, then people will never respect them for who they are. Rosen would …show more content…
In her article Rosen discusses how anybody with a camera and photoshop has power in today’s society. Rosen goes on to say “the power of the image has been diluted” (355); what Rosen means is that the technologies to alter an image are so inexpensive that anyone can do it. Images have become oversimplified, anyone with a camera and editing software can produce an image and upload it anywhere or even broadcast it on television. Hymowitz would support Rosen’s argument by saying how these images that people produce destroy both a woman’s privacy and self-identity. Furthermore Hymowitz would talk about how altered images make women disposable. The media can alter these images to get a headline then just dispose of the image without realizing the damage they have caused. Hymowitz also discusses how the media obtains “details that only their Brazilian waxers should know” (Hymowitz 235); the media then puts this in magazines and even on television. Hymowitz argues that it’s overexposure like this that ruins privacy for women. Rosen would support this argument by saying that the reason women are overexposed is because anyone can produce these images and put then anywhere they please. Advertisements, the internet, celebrities and other technology present women in sexualized and demeaning manners. Showing women in positive manners can shift the negative image of women and empower their role in society.
The images that infiltrate our lives appear to focus on maintaining the status quo or the norms of society. They are designed to show what is expected in life. Berger states, "Images were made to conjure up the appearance of something that was absent"(107). Berger argues "images" are "conjured up" or imagined to represent what is "absent" or what the individual wants to see as reality. I chose these four journal writings because I believe they are the strongest pieces I have written from the second half of the semester. The main focus of these journals was based on readings under the women as objects topic. The oppression of women has led to females being objectified and used as gratification for men. A woman’s body and appearance have become a commodity, especially in the media. Films, television shows, music and advertisements use women’s bodies to attract their audience and sell products. The movie watched in class “Killing Us Softly 4,” highlights this fact while presenting how women are represented throughout the media. The media has set and perpetuated a particular standard of beauty that is restrictive, but for some many women completely unattainable. The women represented in the media are young, thin and have western or European characteristics. Where does that leave the majority of women that do not fall under this category? This leads to women developing eating disorders to achieve an ideal body image that is manufactured through Photoshop and other picture editing systems. Women of color, women with disabilities or any woman that does not follow this standard is not represented within the media. When a few women do break this mold and become famous, they are set at a different standard. These women’s differences become the highlighted feature of their fame. In the early 1980’s, women were not supposed to be open-minded or even allowed to have such sexual thoughts that Madonna inspired. Women were expected to be traditional and keep their femininity behind closed doors. When Madonna first came into the entertainment business, it was a complete shock for everyone. In media today, women seem to have a terrible way of being represented. This can even be brought as far back as the early 1950 's. When we look at the past we can see that there are so many similarities to the present day. One thing that we all seem to notice from the media is that women are constantly being sexually objectified. Women are often represented as individuals who are seen as just a means of sexual gratification and nothing else. Whereas men are seen as sexual subjects. This brings the question if this will ever change in society or will this keep going on for future generations. In this essay, I will be talking about how women in media are objectified in reality TV shows.

Society heavily relies on the media to show them what is in the norm and what is going on in the world. The media also serves as another way to display the normative of the society. Sexuality is a big part in the media and what is appropriate sexuality. The media negatively affects the people who do not fit society’s ideal normative. This includes people with a sexuality that is not the normative of heterosexuality. In the media, these people of other sexualities are excluded and made to feel they do not fit into society. My pyramid shows how society classifies people by their sexuality in the media. This involves highlighting the normative sexuality and excluded any other sexuality from the mainstream media.
A common trend in the entertainment industry today is the objectification of women in society. Sexualizing women are seen in media such as; movies, advertisement, television show and music video, where their main focus is providing the audience with an image of women as sexual objects rather than a human. In November of 2014, Kim Kardashian posed for Paper Magazine baring her monstrous backside with a glass of champagne sitting on top causing the internet to so call “break.” Today, women are learning that is acceptable to over sexualize themselves at a young age because of media and its overall influence. What the celebrities and media promoting these actions do not realize is that it is forcing women to become an object. Also popular songs have promoted a rape culture aimed at women, and it does not always allow stars to use their platform for greater well-being.

The media has a strong influence on society, both negatively and positively. So when children as young as 6 are being influenced by celebrities such as Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, and Britney Spears; we as a society have lost site in what it is to be a positive influence. Kathleen Deveny and Raina Kelly raised awareness in their article “Girls Gone Bad?” which depicts the bad behavior and influences set by celebrities such as Hilton, Lohan, and Spears have any long term affects on young women. Are young women so riveted to the highlights of these celebrities and the media that surrounds their lifestyle that, as Deveny and Kelly boldly puts it, we are raising ‘prosti-tots’? Or can our young women look beyond the bad behavior with lavish lifestyles, and still make a wise decision based on common sense? Not only are young women bombarded with the lifestyle of these celebrities produced by the media but they are plagued with images of how they should behave and what they should look like. This is an adolescent crisis in a young woman’s life because from the stages of preteen to near adulthood is when young women are most susceptible to influence.
Media and communications are a central element of today’s society, yet the thought that media has little to no effect on gender and sexuality shapes how each individual views their own self-identity. Over the years we have witnessed the launch of social media sites, music sites such as YouTube, new genres of music, and other forms of media, that all contribute to the outlook of gender roles and stereotypes. Alexandra Scaturchio, in her article “Women in Media” (2008) describes the media’s idea of beauty as superficial. She supports her argument by placing two pictures side-by-side; a picture of a real, normal-looking woman and her picture after it has been severely digitally enhanced. Her purpose is to show young teenage girls that the models they envy for their looks are not real people, but computer designs. She also states, “the media truly distorts the truth and instills in women this false hope because…they will live their lives never truly attaining this ideal appearance”. Scaturchio wants her readers to realize the media’s distorting capabilities and feel beautiful about themselves, even with flaws.
In an advertisement published in Vogue Paris in February 2009, Steven Klein photographs fashion model Lara Stone in a manner that brought much controversy to the world about women and violence. In the photograph, a fashionably clad woman in lingerie is forcibly held down by a naked man, while a police officer poses suggestively on her legs and points a gun in her face. This advertisement seems excessively violent for a fashion magazine that young girls and the majority of the mainstream world idolize. By condoning and making the type of violence that is popular in fashion magazines ‘cool’, people begin to recreate the scenes in these photographs in real life because they are constantly exposed to it. However, postmodernism offers no clear path to action, Judith Butler identifies this. What Butler (1995) argues is there are various reasons and solutions to women’s subordination. In the case that the term ‘postmodernism’ is so vague that it has to be meaningful. Therefore, the attempts of postmodernists to alter the representational system seem to be futile. In addition, the representation of sex in the media has steadily turned women to become more and more sexualized. Using music video as a deliberate example; Women’s open, moist and lipstick-red lips, half-closed eyelids which can be seen as visually pornographic are all over the place (Juvonen et al., 2004). ‘Adore You’, for example, is a music video of Miley Cyrus, which seems symbolically pornographic. It is very alluring as she moaning, rolling around and pointing a video camera down her panties. Such video would attract more viewings than the ordinary as it is sexually suggestive. As we can see, pornography has been used as a consumer product for profit-gaining purposes and commodified to bring in value. It also connotes a kind of commodified sex; in this way, media recognizes sex for a mass market and make it as a selling point to increase their profits (Nead, 2004). This is the visual implication of pornographisation which we can see solely from watching the video or listening to the music. In this way, pornographication and
