Heroes to me are not just people who fly around the planet in a second or go out
to protect the civilians of our country. A hero to me is an ordinary person trying to
inspire others and themselves. So when I ask myself, “who is my Michigan hero?”
I am not going to say Superman or Spiderman. I'm going to say, “My hero is my Baba,
Christine Kyriakou or you can call her my great grandmother.” Though she may not
have a cape or superpowers she is always
doing the right thing.
My great great grandfather, Scoyan Kyriakou, lived in Macedonia Greece. He
went to go out and find land in, USA Michigan because at the time Greece was taking
over Macedonia. In around the 1920s, after he found land, he went back to Greece in
1924. Then, around 1932, he went back to the USA again, not knowing that his wife

Currently at that time, World War II happened. They
would not let immigrants out, so he found land and built a house for his family. Then,
after the war was done, Scoyan moved back to Greece again to find my Baba as a
twelve-year-old girl. So, Baba had not seen her father in twelve years. Baba stayed
in Greece and got married and had my grandpa, Athanassios Kyriakou. Once he was
about one-year-old, they moved back to the USA for good.
When they moved from Greece they obviously did not know any English, so
Baba started to learn some English from friends and night school. My grandpa also
had to learn English. So he took special classes during school to learn English.
When I was about seven years old, I finally got to meet my Baba. I did not get to see
her much because she lived in Lansing, Michigan. When I did see her, it was
amazing.
I was about 11-years-old when I got truly interested in my family's history. One
thing I also genuinely wanted to do was learn the Macedonian language, like my
Baba and my Grandpa. That's when I ask my Grandfather if he could teach me
childhood and renewed life style were she learned how to distinguish one language to another
Growing up around those who had just emigrated from the former Soviet Union helped me become aware of how important the process of acquiring language can be – both for my parents and for myself. My family, speaking both Russian and Bukharian, barely spoke any English, but they were still determined to learn the language as soon as possible. As my mom sat in front of a television, pausing every few seconds to test her pronunciation, my fascination for the adaptation of speech and language began. I became further fascinated when watching old home videos of myself struggling between the three languages that I grew up surrounded by.
Who is a hero? In contemporary times, usage of the term has become somewhat of a cliché. Over the years, the term “hero” has become representative of a wide variety of individuals, each possessing differing traits. Some of the answers put forth by my colleagues (during our in-class discussion on heroism) as to whom they consider heroes pointed to celebrities, athletes, teachers and family members. Although the occupations differed, each of their heroes bore qualities that my classmates perceived as extraordinary, whether morally or physically. Nonetheless, Webster’s defines “hero” as “a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities.” Thus, it is worth considering that individuals become heroes relative to the situation with which they’re faced.
Being a hero means to be willing to risk your life for others. Such as, Pat Tillman. Pat Tillman was a fantastic football player and he loved playing it too. Despite that, Pat Tillman turned down a 3.6million dollar contract to the Arizona Cardinals to go fight the war against terrorism. He ended up dieing from friendly fire. All this goes to show how brave Pat Tillman was to risk his life and give up his football career to go fight in Afghanistan to help protect the American people. Likewise, the people that helped evacuate New York City after the
Originally born in Moscow, Russia, I came to the United States fourteen years ago with my parents along with my unrelated brother as their newly adopted children. Transitioning to a new country can be hard, but not knowing the language is even harder. For the first few years of my life, I struggled to speak, write and read any English. Since then, I have become acclimated to the American culture and state of mind and learned English proficiently, but, lost touch with my mother tongue because I spoke minimal Russian. I have always been proud to acknowledge and tell others that I am adopted from Mother Russia. However, over the past several years my curiosity and desire to learn about my native homeland have increased significantly. My interest in the Russian language reignited last year when I overheard a Russian and Kazakh having a conversation in Russian. I soon found myself listening to anyone anywhere, who spoke Russian.
One defining characteristic of every hero is that she thinks of others before herself. Many people, when called upon to name the heroes in their lives, will mention a parent or teacher who clearly put the needs of her children, above their own. When someone acts proves he cares more about those around him than he does even about his own life, he is considered a hero. Johnny Appleseed sacrificed many things in order to help other, the same applies to us.
Over the course of history the definition of what makes a hero has made many changes. Beowulf, Superman, and firefighters are all examples of heroes, but they are very different when broken down. Today’s society defines a hero by his values, his strength, and his journey.
Her parents couldn’t find proper way to learn English so they relied on her to do so. Anaisa tells how she had to give up a lot of the fun things she did to learn as much as she could. She would go to school, and after she would have to attend afterschool learning programs to get practice with this new language. Also had to attend evening classes from Monday to Thursday to get an even better understanding of this new language and customs. She really wanted to do other things of course, but she cared about her family more than anything. She explains that the process of learning was very hard because English is a very complicated language to learn, from the writing to the pronunciations to how to use the words properly. It was all a living hell for such a young
In order for me to better explain what I believe to be a hero, I want to describe the hero in my life; my Father. My dad is an exceptional man, not only has he been in the United States Marine Corps for 24 years and counting, going on numerous tours overseas, he is a student pursuing his Master’s degree. He is a basketball or baseball coach depending on what sport my siblings and I are currently in to, he is a math or English
Some definitions of heroes are people, who have noble qualities, and put the lives of others before their own life. They are expected to be reasonable and calm, during scary times, like when a shooting is going on, looking out for
My mother went to adult school to learn English, but she did not finish all the levels. Just like Tan’s mother, my mother knows the basics of English such as she, he, sad and happy. My mother can’t use nor can she understand sophisticated words. Tan’s mother also doesn’t understand the English Tan uses when giving a speech or writing a story. Tan explains to us that she cannot use the English she learned in school with her mother because her mother does not understand the concept. As with my mother, she cannot really compose a well-structured sentence. Tan states “some of my friends tell me they understand fifty percent of what my mother says.” (Tan 623) My parents do not speak English due to their lack of pronunciation and the lack of knowing what words mean. They usually do not use it because they have me talk for them. They only speak it if it is necessary, like at their jobs or at the store where there is no one that speaks Spanish and I am not
A hero is someone you look up to, someone who has done something to inspire you, someone who is your role model. In our society, there are many different types of heroes—family, friends, teachers, firefighters, and police officers to name a few. But a hero that stands out to me is a U.S. soldier. Soldiers risk their lives every day just so we can have our freedom.
One awesome story my family has let me know is my family 's history. My maternal grandma 's guardians went to the United States from Ukraine by vessel around 1906 or 1907. They at first settled in Export, PA, in light of the fact that they had relatives and companions living there. My grandma was conceived in 1921 and was the seventh of eight youngsters. A year after she was conceived, they moved to Warren, OH, where they stayed until my grandma moved on from secondary school. The family 's religion was Ukrainian Orthodox. My grandma grew up communicating in Ukrainian and English. Ukrainian was talked in the home, and English was talked at school. My grandma began kindergarten at the age five knowing no English. She grabbed the English dialect from her colleagues. My grandma 's family did not claim an auto. Each Easter, they strolled around seven miles to go to...
Thus, children adopt mother tongue at home because it is the type of language heard and learned since birth. The author wrote,” I was walking down the street with my mother and again found myself conscious of the English I was using, and English I do use with her. We were talking about the price of new and used furniture and I heard myself saying this’ Not waste money that way’”263). People issued from immigrant families and born in the USA communicate with limited English to their relatives. However; while communicating outside of their private circle, they speak properly to correspond to the American Standard English.
When one thinks of heroes, names such as Ghandi, Martin Luther King, and Mother Theresa often come to mind. These people had done a lot of favors, courage, helps, and more of things for the people who needed them. They have change the world. But, heroes can be in anyway, even in each of individuals in the world. I have the persons who I think is the best hero in my mind. They are my parents.
