Despite many thoughts and opinions, Christianity and Islam and more similar than people think. Despite what they think, Christianity and Islam share very similar beliefs and commonalities. In this paper, not only will the differences be discussed, but the similarities will also be discussed as well. Both religions will be looked at in-depth, as well as their historical beginnings, beliefs, creators, and rules and guidelines.
First, we will discuss Christianity. The origin of Christianity started off as a sub-movement of Judaism started around the year 30 CE in or around Palestine. The founder of Islam was Muhamad who lived from 570-632 AD. In relationship to Christianity, this took place well beyond after Christianity, so essentially it stems from Christianity. Muhammad grew up in Mecca with his uncle Abu Talib, and was reportedly a religious man, who went on retreats to pray. He recalls that God came to him in a vision through the angel Gabriel, and there you can see the similarity with Christianity as the angel Gabriel appeared to the Virgin Mary to tell her she will bear the Messiah. Muhammad said that Allah (God) told him that God is One, there is no trinity, and that even though they acknowledge Jesus, they believe that he is only a prophet, along with Moses, and even Muhammad himself. People who believe in Islam are called Muslims. Muhammad, unlike Jesus, did not have a huge following and some people were actually quite hostile with Muhammad and he was forced to go into hiding in Medina, just north of his hometown of Mecca. With his many wives, he had children, but all died before adulthood to be his successor. Regardless of him moving north and not having many followers, he got an army of 10,000 followers to go back to Mecca to take it over and destroyed any other gods and idols the people worshiped. There was very little resistance, therefore it didn’t take very long for them to take the city. Him and his followers expanded to other parts of the Middle East in hopes of spreading Islam to other tribes of people. They succeeded.
