How can business participate in God’s redemptive plan? Many of the struggles faced in the business world by Christians is filtered though the question of, “how can God’s redemptive plan be incorporated at my level of influence, when I am not a part of the decisions being made within my company”. Adopting a worldview is key as Keller put it, “at a day-to-day level, our worldview will shape our individual interactions and decisions” (Keller 158). Whether your worldview is biblical or not, it is holistic. As a Christian your work is neither for self nor for man but rather it is for the Lord (Keller 221). If your identity is defined by what you do, where you work, the amount of money in your account or the awards you’ve won your like a hamster on a wheel working hard only to end up no where than where you started. The question of who are you can only be answered and shaped by the Creator. We will ultimately make all decisions according to our faith” (Chewning 6,7). Hebrews 5:7 KJV says, “without faith it is impossible to please Him: for he that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.” In a world whose greatest influences are greed and selfishness, the Christian in business must remain strong in their walk of faith. The only way to do so is through strong convictions and by following the leading of God. In contrast to a businessman who happens to be a Christian, a Christian in business can follow God’s calling to go into business and ultimately do business according to the heart of God. “Business is God’s rightful domain. He claims the supreme place of authority over every aspect of life, including business” (Peel). When this has been comprehended from the lowest position to the highest position, in an organization, the Christian in business can flow congruently with Gods
plans. Every business has to define its bottom line and every person has to determine his or her bottom line. How many cities, states, regions or even nations will have an opportunity to experience everlasting transformation, the love of God and essentially participate in His redemptive plan, in and through the business? “When you ask how you bring God into your work, it’s by not getting caught up in making money or achieving power so that they become your gods” (Gunther). The bottom line for a Christian in business is not profit, its people! This is a different perspective, which influences how Christians do business and; therefore, the training process requires an understanding of how God’s word, affects the decisions and choices made. Profit in it’s self is not bad, but when it become the greatest and only mark of achievement it becomes unhealthy leading people to spiral into unethical choices because greed and selfishness now sit on throne of their heart (Keller 165). “There is no management-control system that can manage those people to always do the right thing,” therefore an understanding of what your bottom line is can in turn affect the way you do fulfill your role within your organization which ultimately effect the organization (Gunther).
As in 2 Kings 22 verses 7-9 when the money was entrusted to the workers and supervisors of the temple, we as a society need to entrust our financial needs with the Lord. The attitude of today is to consume and make more money to buy things so enough is never enough. Pretty soon the money is your only focus and you lose sight of Gods plan for us to spread his work. Our need to make more leads to greed and deceit, which you see in the media so much today. The best way to do business is with honesty and integrity, it will go a long way when people can put their trust in you and not have to worry about being misled. In 2 Kings 22 verse 9 “ Then Shapan the secretary went to the king and reported to him: “ Your officials have paid out the money that was in the temple of the lord and have entrusted it to the workers and supervisors at the temple.” (2 Kings 22: 9).
In 2 Timothy 3;16-17 states, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (www.biblegateway.com). Business has been in charge of the upgraded innovation that has generally supplanted the drudgery of most physical work, an outcome in part of the innovativeness of business and its readiness to take and bear the weight of money related hazards. Besides, maybe no establishment in our regular life is more proficient in its operations and more discerning in its association than business. When focusing on a business strategy, maintaining the conceptual mindset of business as a mission (BAM) is crucial, not only for increasing the company’s success, but individual leaders within the business (Tunehag, 2008). One of the strategies to focus on while improving an approach of BAM is the concept of cultural intelligence. Furthermore, individuals capable of self-study and improvement will begin to see an increase for their company, as well as, God’s kingdom when their focus is in alignment with the teaching of the Holy Bible.
When it comes to the way you treat and speak to others on a daily basis I think it comes down to being mindful and caring. God was a leader and expects us to be a leader and help those around us. I feel as Christians it is important for us to feel comfortable enough to speak the word of God to others to form conversation and friendships. I feel like a biblical worldview could influence the way you decide on a future career. With God expecting us to act as servants and help others I feel like it would only be right in choosing a job geared to helping others and spreading the word. For myself, I know I have always wanted to become a teacher and influencing children and helping them create their own personal worldview.
