Christian Responses to Abortion and Euthanasia

Different Christians have different viewpoints on the issues of

Abortion and Euthanasia.

The Church of England states that life is god given and is to be;

‘Nurtured, supported and protected.’

It views ending a human life at the beginning or end as;

‘A great moral evil.’

Also they have stated a case for ‘The rights of humans to be valued.’

This explains that people who are ill and vulnerable, people who need

special care and the unborn should be treated as well as any other

human being.

However on the subject of abortion they believe that there were

‘strictly limited conditions’ that it can be preformed under like if

the woman could die during child birth or if the pregnancy was the

result of a rape etc.

Anglicans and Methodists believe that life does not begin until the

baby has a chance of living independently from its mother. They

believe that an abortion is an evil which should be avoided. They

believe it is justifiable if there were a risk to the mother’s mental

or physical health or the child would become handicapped. Or if the

family is living in poverty and their social conditions are bad that

is another justifiable reason for an abortion in the Methodist Church.

One organisation that deals with this, are the ‘Christians for Free

Choice.’

Christians for Free Choice believe that the matter should be left for

the woman to decide and her conscience is a guide form God as what

option to take. They are ‘fully informed about all the options, and

then let God guide you.’ They believe an abortion is considered

medically ok if the mother is young or physically/mentally immature

and it would be irresponsible to bring an unwanted child into the

world.

However LIFE and SPUC believe that abortions should not be used and

stopped altogether. LIFE provides counselling to pregnant women, this

is done through parish groups. They give them emotional support as

well as options on how if they wish not to keep the child, like
