Christian and Muslim responses to the Black Plague were different. The Black Plague

killed millions of people in both religions, but the view of the plague on both sides was very

different. The Black Death spread wide and fast throughout North America, Europe, and the

Middle East; flees carried this deadly disease throughout the trade routes which were traveled by

many people. There were three different types of the plague, Pneumonic, Septicemic, and

Bubonic. The Bubonic Plague was the most common of all the plagues. The Black Plague killed

between twenty-five and forty-five percent of the populations it encountered, leaving millions

dead. This plague was one of the most destructive natural diseases in world history.

Christ taught the people about God, and the golden rule which is “do unto you as

you would have done unto you”. The Christian’s follow words written by Jesus’ disciples in a

holy book called the Bible. Although Islam didn’t have a golden rule, their holy book was the

Koran.

Christians thought that the Black Death was the end of the world. They viewed the plague

as a bad omen, a punishment sent from God. They blamed the Jewish people for bringing on the

plague, even though they did not. The Christians wanted revenge on the Jews, so they tortured

them by burning them, this obviously did not honor the golden rule. The Christians tried to

prevent the plague in their homes in many ways like avoiding sleeping on the back, made fires,

and used scents to prevent the plague but these did not work so well.

Islam’s view on the Black Death was very different from Christian’s views. The Islam’

viewed it as a blessing. They said it was a divine fact from God, and that they should embrace

the plague. Even though they viewed it as a blessing still no one wanted to catch the plague, so

they also used prevention methods like avoiding sad talk. But overall the Muslims viewed
