Reading Reflection: Christian Leadership Essentials
Summary
When it comes to leading people, it becomes a laborious task. It takes a unique individual to be able to lead people. As a leader, you will encounter many obstacles, and a person must be able to cope with these obstacles and be able to keep a level head so that you can get things going back in the right direction. Furthermore, through hard work and dedication success is inevitable. Christian Leadership Essentials is a brilliant book by David Dockery (2011), to all leaders and inspiring leaders. There are many concepts that he provided in this book. I will be discussing four of the concepts here in this paper. The first concept that stuck out to me in the reading material is when the author spoke about being knowledgeable. It is crucial for leaders to be knowledgeable about life, reality, their business, ministry, and work (Dockery, 2011). When a leader knows what they are doing, it will assist them in making the right decisions for the best of all. When a leader is knowledgeable about what is going on, it will help gain trust from the people that they are leading. When people are following you, they look for assurance from the leader that he/she knows what they are doing and where they are trying to achieve. Also, when a leader

It is vital for a leader to have sought God on a vision and mission for the ministry. “Every person in a leadership role must have a strong, clear understanding of that mission and be committed to doing whatever they can to make the institution strong and effective” (Dockery, 2011). Vision is necessary because you must first know what you are trying to get accomplished. The mission is critical because it is the means of what steps you are going to take to achieve the vision. Once the leader has a clear understanding of the vision and mission, it is his job to make sure that at everyone involved
Leadership within Christian community should be with distinct qualities and traits of an effective Christian leader. The author defined leadership by not focusing on profit when Christ said, “Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all.” The author explored the leadership qualities and practices that are not only distinct within the community of Christian leadership but also applicable in any arena of leadership. Significance comes from working with associates and friends. Similarly, the joy of success comes from the journey toward it than its accomplishment. Grace-full leader is a responsive leader who allows an organization to discontinue practices that are no longer effective and replace them with other good ideas and effective methods.
Leadership can be defined as the ability of a superior to influence the behavior of a minor or group and persuade them to follow a particular course of action. A leader sets a course of action and ensures that everyone follows the action. Leading can apply to leading oneself, other individuals, groups, organizations and societies. The nature of how leading is done depends on the framework of the situation, one's point of view, and on the nature and needs of those involved. While leadership is learned, the skills and knowledge processed by the leader are influenced by their traits, such as beliefs, values, ethics, and most importantly character. Knowledge and skills directly relate to the process of leadership, while the other qualities give the leader certain characteristics that make them unique. Leaders can come from anyone in society today. They can merely come from a neighborhood kid picking up trash around the neighborhood to the hardship of being a cop on a high-speed chase. Most importantly leaders can either be well-known or barely known. They all exemplify the same characteristics. The role of leadership is greatly portrayed in all three stories of Beowulf, Oedipus the King, and Antigone.
In today’s society, Effective leaders are essential to an organization and exceptional leadership techniques impact the success of reaching goals. Most important leaders often viewed and analyzed as a key component of an organization improperly trained leader can cause both moral and costly negative consequences. Even though unprepared leaders lead in our community today, Billy Graham’s leadership style and communication skills affected the United States because he exhibits characteristic of a leader. There were several obstacles as a leader that Billy Graham endured as a visionary, and his leadership effectiveness and traits observed throughout his ministry.
Gary Collins, a Christian counselor, helps individuals to comprehend their full potential using a God-centered way of coaching. He believes that, through coaching, an individual builds up a vision for their life and a desire for a good future. The book aids coaches to acquire skills that they require to help others, to emerge winners during difficult and challenging moments in their life. The book is also designed to develop Christian coaches’ in questioning, listening and responding. These can help Christian coaches to assess themselves and build up a strategy for their work. Collins rewrote the second edition in order to simplify his coaching methods. The second publication develops his practical skills as a new head in the world that is changing quickly, which includes how to use diverse situations, insights based on the Bible and customized forms among others.
Although written for church leadership, everyday church members would also benefit from understanding the concepts that Dawn is directing at God-empowered leaders. Ms. Dawn's work is predominantly scholarly, and she cites several other works at great length.... ... middle of paper ... ...
The authors then go deeper than just leading; they speak of being a leader and growing other leaders. One of the greatest challenges leaders today face is training and developing new leaders. Jesus wanted those around him to succeed. He had vision, values, and purpose, he stated them clearly, and did all he could to see they were carried out. In the book Lead Like Jesus we read how Jesus empowered and gave ownership to those around him, concerned more with their success than his own. It highlights that Jesus is the greatest leadership role model of all time, that He mandated Hi...
They present a process of leadership development as a challenging and unpredictable climb, often stable at the bottom and shaky at the top (17). The book illustrates this by contrasting two “ladders”, where the first is the “capacity ladder”. We try to climb this ladder in order to become successful leaders, however, this does not always lead to positive influence that can endure legacy. The second ladder is called the “character ladder”, that emphases on developing integrity and character by creating environments and relationships of grace. Next, the book shows readers how to clime the character ladder by embracing humility, submission, and obedience through trusting God and others with us, choosing vulnerability, and aligning with truth. It turns out that “the climb up the character ladder is a climb toward interdependence” (96). The book closes with examples of people who demonstrated the values found in the previous chapters, and encourages us to take practical steps in becoming a better

An effective leader adapts changes and communicates his vision to his followers until the followers believe in that vision as their own
Robert Clinton states “The central task of leadership is influencing God’s people toward God’s purposes” (Clinton, 1988). George Barna defines a Christain Leader as “someone who is called by God to lead; leads with and through Christlike character; and demonstrates the functional competencies that permit effective leadership to take place” (Barna, 1997). It is a shame we as Christians fail to recognize that Christ would have us be leaders in more than the church.
God is the focal point for spiritual gifts, talents, and training for leadership. The disciples were trained by Jesus. He did not take disciples into a classroom but He taught by examples.9 Many times the disciples were put in situations by Jesus to help them learn on-the-job. Even in missions, leaders cannot be prepared for every circumstance that may arise; however; with his talents, spiritual gifts, and the Holy Spirit, one can have the resources necessary to be successful. With one’s failures, spiritual gifts, and talents, the Holy Spirit will use these things to train leaders as they continue to aspire in
Leadership has no consistent definition. In my opinion, leadership basically entails the ability of a person to influence, motivate and inspire others. A leader is someone who is able to create change among people. Examples of leaders are mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther king jnr, prophet Mohammed as well as Jesus Christ who I will be discussing in terms of Christianity.
In leadership, the words and actions of leaders are in the spotlight of followers, moral failures often precede the loss of integrity; however, integrity can also be lost by failing to do the simple things such as following through on a promise or dodging a commitment (Stewart, 2003). Jesus requires integrity in leadership even in small matters; thus, when it comes to integrity, small matters can also be huge ones in Christian leadership (Stewart, 2003). Outside the confines of Christian leadership, one challenge to secular leadership is the ego of the leader; hence, the ego of a business executive can be a very destructive force and can prevent a good company from becoming a great company (Kleinman, 2004). Businesses that are termed successful have leaders with ambition but no ego; therefore, those leaders with ambition but no ego, ultimately place the business or institution above themselves (Kleinman, 2004). Ego comes at a great cost to leadership because of pride, in the end, pride leads to blindness in decision making and unavoidable future regret. My own view on the biggest challenge to leadership is developing management effectiveness. Management is frequently defined in terms of being a systematic process that controls people and resources; thus, with an overlap between leadership and management, many leaders greatly need
