While reflecting on how a Christian might benefit from the study of other religions, one key factor came to mind, that key component being the overall commission to evangelize and spread the Word to all the world. To achieve this sort of task, the most valuable asset a Christian should possess is a diverse knowledge of other faiths. I say this, as I feel it is important to understand the beliefs, practices, and acculturation of those you seek to reach. While one might have absolutely no stake in learning about other religions; the knowledge of other cultural and religious beliefs and traditions form effective relationships. The key principal, is to know your audience and how to relate to them with an empathetic mindset. For Christians attempting …show more content…
The relevant definitions of dialogue offered by Merriam-Webster (2015) are; “a conversation between two or more persons” and, “a discussion between representatives of parties to a conflict that is aimed at resolution”. Given these definitions, a Christian dialog with other religions, involves being able to maintain reciprocal communications with people of other religions with an attitude of respect and friendship in a confident fashion. The overall goal of such dialog is contextualization, which involves building a bridge that creates interreligious relations with individuals and communities of other faiths by situating the message to their culture (Corduan, 2012). According to Corduan (2012), “evangelism requires the interplay of three of three cultures: the biblical culture, the evangelist’s home culture and the receptor’s culture” (p.59). Since the very last instructions Jesus gave to the disciples before He was taken up to Heaven was to “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.”(Mark 16:15-16, NIV); the desired end result of an effective Christian dialogue with people of other faiths should to lead to their conversion and commitment to Christianity. In order to achieve such a task it would benefit a Christian missionary to learn everything from other …show more content…
According to Cosgrove (2006), this sort of learning also aides in the development and strengthening of one’s worldview; which in turn would affect one’s view of morality and how others view the world (p. 21). When examining the validity of other religions one might assess certain key aspects such as evidence, logical consistency, existential repugnance and how it applies to human nature (p.66). When examining the evidence presented by a religion we naturally would turn to what we know about the world and ourselves (p. 66). However, when analyzing the logical consistency of a religion, one would want to ensure that nothing is contradictory within its doctrine and teachings (p. 66). In order to test existential repugnance one would need to imagine whether or not they picture living in a world which is aligned with that particular religion (p.67). Lastly, and perhaps the most effective test of a religion is to examine it against the human personality by examining how it views self-awareness, consciousness, free will, moral notions, creativity, and spiritual aspirations (p. 68). Making such an assessment of other religions strengthens critical thinking skills in order to better serve a diverse world (Cosgrove,
and grow in the scope of their experience and understanding of their faith.1 All Christians engage
“Go, therefore and make disciples of all the nations,” is the essence of Christianity. Jesus Christ commanded his followers to go to all the directions of the world and share the good news. But how is one to do this when these nations are full of cultures and differences that these disciples had yet to encounter? Throughout the history of Christianity, we see many types of Christianities taking place through different forms of leadership, and hierarchy. To each, they contain their own views, ideas and concepts on how Christianity should look and what it should contain all the while trying to keep the very foundations of Christ’s teachings. But as the world continues to get older and grander, we begin to see the practices and factors of Christianity being weakened by the unnoticed acts of Jesus and his ideas of social cultural acceptances. By taking a look at the Chinese Rites Controversy, I will argue the importance of culture and the adaptation of culture in evangelical approaches.
Christian worldview for learning is Matthew 20:19-20 says “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have command you: and, lo, I am with you always unto the end of the world”www.biblegateway.com. As Christians we are to teach, witness, and make disciples of men, women, boys, and girls. When we teach them to become disciples, they will make more disciple, telling and teaching them about God, and learning to believe and please Him.
In a survey conducted in 2012, LifeWay.com inquired about the importance of evangelism among members of the Christian faith. The results of the survey showed that 80 percent of people who claimed to follow Jesus Christ and had openly devoted themselves to the teaching of Christianity, felt that they had a “personal responsibility to share their religious views and beliefs about Jesus Christ with non-christians” (Wilke, LifeWay.com). Surveys such as this reflect the Christian doctrine of evangelism and the weight it holds within the Christian faith. As can be seen back in the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus Christ commanded His followers “to go and make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19).” However, Jesus never told His followers how doing this.
America is full and rich with diverse people, religions and values; they make America great. Just look at Riverside, California, there are over fifty churches of different denominations of Christianity, three synagogues, two temples, and one mosque; all coinciding peacefully in the city (Yellow Pages). Because Riverside is so diverse, religious pluralism and religious tolerance are two steps in making Riverside more connected. The first step is tolerance, a reflex that acknowledges a person will come across people of a different faith. The second step is pluralism, which is a better understanding of a person’s religion as well as the other religions around them. Many believe pluralism is the better of the two, because of the interaction involved and the creation of harmony, but pluralism’s faults are greater than the benefits. Currently religious pluralism is quality America should strive for, but America is not ready for pluralism yet, so religious tolerance is best for the diverse population of America today.
Teaching infuses understanding and knowledge. Spreading the message about Christ and the ability to lean, trust, and depend on Him is the message of gospel and the New Testament. “Paul evangelized as the commissioned representative of the Lord Jesus Christ. Evangelism was a task that had been specifically entrusted to him. Paul saw himself as Christ’s herald” (Packer, 1961, p. 42-43). The gospel is a real message about Christ who comes to save real sinners. It’s critically important that sinners come to an understanding that they are far apart from God and known as enemies to Him. “The gospel is a message about sin. It tells us how we have fallen short of God’s standard; how we have become guilty, filthy, and helpless in sin, and now stand under the wrath of God. It tells us that the reason why we sin continually is that we are sinners by nature, and that nothing we do, or try to do, for ourselves can put us right, or bring us back into God’s favor” (Packer, 1961, p.
... In order to understand the Bible we must read it as the Psalmist says “O how I love Thy law! It is my meditation all the day.” (Psa. 119:97). However there some suggestions to cope with the study of the Bible in effective manner. The Bible was written a long time ago before us. That is why we need to deal with some back grounds, context, and theology differs with our time. Some hermeneutics principles can help us how to work in the better frame of interpret the Bible, such as the literary context, historical context and how to compare Scripture.
What is Christianity and why has it been able to develop into a continuously growing and evolving religion?
The following essay will evaluate the importance of the journey that takes place from Systematic to Practical theology; this view will be explored through Ronelle Sonnenberg’s research done regarding ‘being together’ in a youth setting. This essay will first build on the basis of Practical Theology; furthermore addressing the importance of the community aspect within a youth setting; this will lead to the process that takes place between a Systematic stance, leading to a Practical theological stance.
Teachers must create lessons to inspire their students to think and make decisions based on God 's principles. The school should foster an environment where the students realize what Christ has done for them and give them the desire to see others come to know Christ as their Savior. A good way to make this happen is to create diverse learning opportunities where students can learn about other cultures and environments where missionaries are working to reach people for the Lord. Basically, the purpose of Christian education is directing the process of human development toward godliness of character and action.
As a student at the University of Portland, who has now spent a semester living amidst the Catholic culture, I have started to think about religion fundamentally different than prior to this year. Theology class has been enlightening. In class, a new external lens of how one can view faith while learning to think critically in the search of truth has been presented. The inquisitiveness in me has led me to ask hard questions regarding myself, my perceptions, my misconceptions, and even some heartfelt convictions while contemplating my faith. I have experienced legitimate struggles. I acknowledge I have ignorant barriers keeping me from totally living a life with God and for God due to the confusion of exactly what that means. “All truths are
Evangelism is one of the key component for changing people’s lives. McRaney states, “The word evangelism comes from a combination of Greek words for “good” and “messenger.” Evangelism involves bringing the goods. Kent Hunter reminded us that “when Christians witness, they tell how Jesus Christ has changed their own lives. The change in their own lives gives them the desires to share the Good News with others.” Christians must share their testimony to people and spread the gospel so that they can bring lost souls to Christ. God has commissioned every Christian to evangelize so that people will learn about Jesus Christ and accept Him as their personal savior. Matthew 28:19 states, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”. Christians are required to spread the Gospel throughout the world and can no longer just attend church. Christians must plant seeds and water the seeds so that lost souls will be saved.
A pastor has a great responsibility to minister the Word of God and to be a shepherd to his people. The pastor must be committed to biblical truths when he engages the work of the ministry. Some of these truths include: The Bible is the infallible Word of God, his preaching must be from the Word of God, and he must do proper exegesis to get to the authorial intent and proclaim that to his congregation.
“Evangelism in the Wesleyan tradition puts us on a journey in which we abide in Christ,” thus strengthening our relationship with God the Father. If we feel secure with this belief, why do people shy away from wanting to participate in evangelism? Rainer explains that there are a number of reasons why people are reluctant to evangelize. The number one reason he established was “Christians have no sense of urgency to reach lost people.” The other fourteen reasons that were recognized in his study were all ligament reason that I have heard from people as to why they do not want to evangelize. Many people feel that this task is, and should be, the responsibility of the pastor. Perhaps the most troubling reason that Rainer came up with is that “Christians don’t want to share the truth of the gospel for fear they will offend
My definition of religion has mostly stayed the same, but my perception of it has changed. At the beginning of the class, I assumed religion was something you believed based on your moral principles. I now believe that those moral principles are based on the religion that you believe in. Your religion changes your perception of the world and how to go about in it. Your religion tells you what is right and wrong in the world and answers all of the big questions one asks. Religion according to our book is, “A pattern of beliefs and practices that expresses and enacts what a community regards as sacred and/or ultimate about life” (Van Voorst 6). That definition was one thing that really got me thinking about my own personal idea of what religion
