Shania Jackson is a mature Christian thinking of opening a Christian coffeehouse near Denver, Colorado. Her husband, Marvin, is open to making a contribution of capital to the business, but he has no interest in participating in its operation or management.

DECIDING ON THE BUSINESS ENTITY

Shania is in a great position to better, not only her own professional career, but to also have a sound impact on many others by starting a franchise of her Christian Coffeehouse. Some buyers flourish as independent business owners, while others are more likely to be in the black as franchise owners. In reality, there are no easy answers to the independent business versus franchise dilemma. Instead, you will need to carefully evaluate the factors that differentiate the two approaches, talk with your family and other trusted advisers, and decide which one is right for you, for the bible says that you should trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. If you decided not to become a franchised company, and went forward independently, then you should also know that the name “The Gathering Place” has been trademarked as the name of a temporary shelter for the homeless and impoverished in Denver, Colorado (USPTO, 2013). This trademark was up for opposition on October 16, 2012, and it became a valid trademark on January 1st the year of 2013 (USPTO, 2013).
