“Alaska was the cure to the disease of my despair.” -Summer Lane. Chris Mcandless, a hiker, knew what he wanted to do with his life. He was living in nature alone away from his family and loved ones. Chris left his family distressed to go live his dream. Chris thought that Alaska would cure his childhood. Jon Krakaeur wrote an article titled “Death of an Innocent” to tell the story of Chris McCandless. Chris McCandless is a 24 year old with a big passion for nature. He wanted to prove to himself that he could survive living in the wild. Chris McCandless was independent, he went into this adventure by himself. Chris McCandless went on his extensive adventures unprepared. In multiple events, Chris showed himself that he was not ready for the hikes and journeys he was going to travel. During the journey, Chris McCandless lacked important supplies and resources. Chris loved the wildlife and he often explored it and wanted to live in it. He was able to finally fulfill his dream since he was little, but it ended short because of his idiotic behavior.Krakauer explains, “Alex’s backpack appeared to weigh only 25 or 30 pounds, which struck Gallien, an accomplished outdoorsman, as an improbably light load for a three-month sojourn in the backcountry, especially so early in the spring.” (Pg #1) McCandless was going on a three month journey, but his backpack only appeared to weigh only 25 or 30 pounds. To be in the wild for more than a month, you will need plenty of supplies in your bag to survive the full journey. It was irresponsible to not pack enough for himself, it was very idiotic on his part. He thought he was able to survive with very few items during the lengthy journey.
