Imagine living out in the wild alone. No one to rely on, and no where to find help. Quite literally, that was how Chris McCandless lived the adult years of his life. Into the Wild by John Krakauer is a novel that documents the entirety of Chris McCandless’ life. From where he grew up, to when he graduated, all until that fateful day that Chris laid to rest one final time. McCandless was a strange individual. Critics claim Chris to be crazy or stupid, however there is evidence proving them wrong. Chris wasn’t stupid, he just had a different approach to life that he took to extremes. Now some may say Chris was overjoyed because of his graduation, however his family would say quite the opposite. Chris was overjoyed to finally be free and live his own way. Shortly after graduating, he said his final goodbyes and hit the road. There was absolutely no stopping him. He knew what he was doing this time. He had made it out once, and he felt this time would be no different. Chris thought his wit, survival instincts, and confidence would be more than enough to survive his journey. Although there is evidence supporting Chris as a bright individual, many people still make the argument that he was stupid or crazy. Critics could not come to reason with Chris and his unique ideas. Those who oppose Chris claim he was “a narcissist who perished out of arrogance and stupidity” (Krakauer, Author’s Note). A harsh statement to make, given the man had just passed away. They believe Chris only ever acted for his own benefit. That he never once thought how his actions may affect his family, or anyone he has ever cared for.
