There have been many speculations as to what lead to the demise of Chris McCandless. I agree with Krakauer that the mold, R. leguminicola, lead to the death of McCandless. Krakauer had gone to great lengths to determine the cause of death and he stumbled upon the most unlikely culprit mold on wild potato seeds. In the beginning the cause of the death was unknown and seeming hard to narrow down. Krakauer and his investigation team initially thought that McCandless was just careless and mistaked H. mackenzii for H. alpinnum. Krakauer "reported with great certainty that H. mackenzii, the wild sweet pea, killed the boy"(Krakauer 192). Krakauer and his team looked at McCandless cause of death was starvation which did not make sense because McCandless
Before going to Alaska, Chris McCandless had failed to communicate with his family while on his journey; I believe this was Chris’s biggest mistake. Chris spent time with people in different parts of the nation while hitchhiking, most of them whom figured out that McCandless kept a part of him “hidden”. In chapter three, it was stated that Chris stayed with a man named Wayne Westerberg in South Dakota. Although Westerberg was not seen too often throughout the story, nevertheless he was an important character. Introducing himself as Alex, McCandless was in Westerberg’s company for quite some time: sometimes for a few days, other times for several weeks. Westerberg first realized the truth about Chris when he discovered his tax papers, which stated that “McCandless’s real name was Chris, not Alex.” Wayne further on claims that it was obvious that “something wasn’t right between him and his family” (Krakauer 18). Further in the book, Westerberg concluded with the fact that Chris had not spoken to his family “for all that time, treating them like dirt” (Krakauer 64). Westerberg concluded with the fact that during the time he spent with Chris, McCandless neither mentioned his
their son was still living. McCandless was hubristic and this was shown when he rejected help
The book about Chris McCandless’s journey into the Alaskan bush, Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer, received a lot of criticism about Chris being foolish for being unprepared. From the articles that I have read, most of the sources do believe that he was poorly prepared for his journey. But there are a few people who believe he was prepared mentally, and an even smaller amount believe he was fully prepared. I believe that Chris only knew what he was doing mentally. He did not have the correct tools or the developed skills to survive, for an extended period of time in the wild. But, he did know what he was about to get himself into. He planned out the trip and knew exactly what his risk factors were. Chris McCandless was either prepared mentally, both mentally and physically, or he was ill-prepared for his voyage.
Some mistakes can be recovered from and some are deemed fatal. Aron recovered from his with a huge price to pay, his arm. Chris made several simple mistakes that lead up to his death. One of Chris' mistakes was taking all his information to survive from one source, his plant identification book. On July 30 McCandless wrote in his journal "EXTREMELY WEAK. FAULT OF POT. SEED". (Krakauer 190) Krakauer went on to show that McCandless probably died from eating not poisonous but contaminated potato seeds. Therefore Chris did not intentionally cause his demise.
Although it may be true that Chris McCandles was stubborn, people should consider that he had family problems, he loved nature and he also had an adventurous spirit. I believe that the motives that led him to the wild were family problems and emotional damage as well as his love of nature and his adventurous spirit. In Chris’s journal it seemed like he had lived for 113 days in that “magic bus” but in his last days he had written that “death looms” and that he was “too weak to walk out”. There are many evidence that connect with family problems as well as his adventurous spirit. As I go on with this essay I will state my theory on why Chris was led into the wild as well as evidence that support my claim.
Throughout Into the Wild, Krakauer portrays Christopher McCandless as an infallibly eager young man hoping to distance himself from the society he so obviously loathes, to "live off the land," entirely independent of a world which has "conditioned [itself] to a life of security." Chris, contrarily to this depiction, is disparagingly viewed by some as a "reckless idiot" who lacked the sense he needed to survive in the Alaskan wilderness. This derogatory assessment of Chris's mindset is representative of the society he hopes to escape and contains all the ignorance that causes him to feel this way. Nevertheless, he is misjudged by these critics, allowing Krakauer to hold the more accurate interpretation of Chris's character, his goals, and his accomplishments.
government was a corrupt, greedy pig commanding people to obey the rules of society. Yet, he
In the short story “a demotic dilemma” written by Carson Mccullers deals with how a parent has to be responsible and must sacrifice their wants and need to take care and provide for their family. As well as the negative effects of a dysfunctional family on a young child. Therefore, it talks about a woman by the name of Emily's that has two children a boy named Andy and a girl named Marianna. Moreover, in the short story Emily's husband Martin has his job translocated by the company he works for to a big city away from the southern life away from family and friends. Which, resulted in Emily losing her stability and social life causing her to relieve this stress and life of isolation by drinking her sorrows away causing her to stumbles down
Chris McCandless lived a life in which he disgusted by human civilization, and left it, eventually being led to his death in Alaska. McCandless entered the Alaskan wilderness severely unprepared, a brutal error that cost him his life. In the novel, Into the Wild by John Krakauer, Chris glances into his mindset by they way of his journal, history, and analysis of his life reveals that Chris McCandless as an arrogant and judgemental narcissist, while not mentally unstable, had a condescending attitude towards society and perished not only from his reckless stupidity but also from his unparalleled ego. Chris McCandless was immune to love and had an obsession with nature and society, him showing characteristics that created the appearance of McCandless
Definition of a seeker= someone who looks outwards and goes on a physical or mental journey to find something hidden about themselves or something.
While the exact cause of Christopher McCandless’ death is not certain, Jon Krakauer hypothesizes that there are two possibilities as to how McCandless died; in the first scenario, McCandless died due to a rare type of malnutrition, called rabbit starvation, caused by the complete absence of fat in a diet. Krakauer writes that McCandless was “consuming fewer calories than he was burning” (188). The other possible sequence of events is that McCandless was poisoned through ingesting potato seeds that contained solanine, “a poison that occurs in plants of the nightshade family, which causes, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, and lethargy in the short term, and adversely affects the heart rate and blood pressure when ingested over an extended period” (190). However, the later course of events is highly unlikely given that McCandless would have needed to consume an incredibly high count of said seeds. According to Krakauer, “.given the light weight of his pack when Gallien dropped him off, it is extremely unlikely that he carried more than a few grams of potato seeds.”
Many people have different views on the death of Chris McCandless and the actions he did that lead to his death. Some say McCandless is a legend as a result of people are still talking about him today. Others look at the whole McCandless story and just think, wow this kid must have been stupid. There are many people who countless views about McCandless, going out into the Alaskan Frontier ill prepared wouldn’t be my idea of a good time.
Leguminicola” (Krakauer 194). As there is ample reason to believe this is the cause of his death, there is a logical reason we can assume this is what happened. This situation could have many reasons for his death, however, Krakauer cleverly applies logos to his writing in order to grow the understanding and persuasiveness of the text. To continue the idea of logical appeal in Into The Wild, Krakauer uses more facts with Chris’s death, “Starvation was posited as the most probable cause of death” (Krakauer 14). The appeal to logos is shown by the use of the phrase most probable, this implies that the other opportunities are not as likely, allowing us to make a logical explanation for the cause of death. This sort of persuasion can be shown in pathos
On November 15, 2017, Horace Verbermockle was on the floor of his bathroom unconscious. His wife Minnie told the doctor, “My husband had a fall and he’s lying unconscious on the bathroom floor. I think he must have been taking a shower and slipped on a cake of soap. I did not move him. I threw a blanket over him and called you immediately. When the doctor arrived he check his body and said he died to a hit to the back of his skull. After the doctor examined the body he noticed the scene of the so called accident and called an investigator. After the investigator looked of the scene he can conclude that Minnie Verbermockle was the reason for his death.
The end for McCandless was a well lived, experienced soul that had seen a lot in the years that he had lived for. He had done great things, and because of that, he will be remembered for a long time. His life was about finding what he wanted most, and doing great things along the way. He had found enlightenment, and discovered tons of things that many people do not know that exist.
