After reading The Odyssey people may think Odysseus is a idea hero, Chris Kyle is the real hero. His elite marksmanship allowed him to save many of his brothers in arms. He made good decisions, while still following order given from command. He procured his skills throughout his childhood, his father bought him his first rifle, a bolt-action .30-06 Springfield, when he was 8 years old. Chris Kyle, the “American Sniper”, is a hero because his decisions were based solely on his comrades well-being, and with that he saved many lives. Odysseus attribute of being a hero was displayed through his wit and strength in overcoming the obstacles that were placed before him, but he wasn’t putting his companions safety first. He was solely fixed on going back to his family, even though his family was already safe in the city. He also cheated on his wife when he arrived on the island hosting Calypso, this weakens his heroic claim …show more content…
His missions were also more of a success. Although Odysseus did make it back, all of his shipmates died because he didn’t put their well-being in mind. Chris Kyle, former member of SEAL Team 3, made a 2,100 yard shot with a MacMillan Tac-338 sniper rifle, killing an insurgent sniper that could’ve killed many of his comrades. He also killed a woman holding a hand grenade, she had a toddler in her hands. Chris Kyle stated, “The woman was already dead. I was just making sure she didn't take any Marines with her. It was clear that not only did she want to kill them, but she didn’t care about anybody else nearby who would have been blown up by the grenade or killed in the firefight. Children on the street, people in the houses, maybe her child.” This is another fundamental example of his smart decision making, even though she was a woman he still shot her with those kids and Marines’ lives in mind. That woman was willing to give her life to end many
In Homer’s the Odyssey, Odysseus has many different qualities that classify him as a hero. He is brave and courageous as shown when he murdered all the suitors who were disrespecting his property even though he was outmanned by them. Despite this, he is by no means all brawn and no brain as he shows his intelligence and cunning numerous times during the epic. A few example of this would be when he was able to blind the one-eyed Cyclops while the rest of his crew didn’t know what to do. Odysseus in many ways is similar to a flowing river, because whenever there is a problem (dam in the river), he would first try to go through it, but if he can’t he would then find a way ar...
Odysseus, during his long journey, exhibited many heroic qualities including bravery, strength, and determination. He was determined to return to his family after hs journey, and he bravely fought to stay alive during the cyclope situation, as well as other situations, and showed strength by being able to battle the cyclopes in self-defense. However, Odysseus was also obnoxiously arrogant about his victory and was actually very selfish throughout his entire story; he almost did not leave his town to help with the war because he did not want to leave to protect his family. Although Odysseus exemplified heroic qualities, this does not make him a true hero.
In past history, heroes come in many different facets of life. The military has produced many of these heroes. Chris Kyle a United States Navy SEAL was one of those heroes. Chris grew up in various locations in Texas. His father worked for AT&T as a manager and they moved around frequently. Chris loved to fight as he stated “Somewhere along the way, I started sticking up for younger kids who were being picked on. I felt I had to look out for them. It became my duty. Maybe it began because I was looking for an excuse to fight without getting in trouble” (American Sniper, Chris Kyle, 21).
A hero is someone who would sacrifice himself for others, someone who is selfless and caring. Odysseus from Homer’s, “The Odyssey” does not have these traits. Throughout the book, Odysseus displays many negative character traits that show he is not someone to be admired or treated like a hero. He is too proud, he does not listen, and he constantly puts his needs before that of his men.
Heroes are known to do many things, and to have many great characteristics. From selflessness to courage, all heroes have a wide variety of amazing characteristics, that make them great. Selflessness and bravery are just two of the many characteristics that modern day heroes, and Greek gods have in common. Chris Kyle is a modern-day war hero, who demonstrates both of these characteristics throughout his life. Chris Kyle is the deadliest sniper in American history; He serves in the navy as a seal, and he has at least one hundred sixty confirmed kills according to the pentagon’s count. In Greek mythology, Ares is a Greek god who demonstrates similar characteristics that Chris Kyle has. He is the god of war, and he demonstrates selflessness and bravery in many different Greek myths. In Greek mythology, Ares is known for his selflessness and bravery. Similarly, modern-day hero, Chris Kyle is also known for his selflessness and bravery. Although these two characters are so different, they have many characteristics in common.
Chris Kyle is a Navy SEAL that specialized in sniping. He is most known because he is the most lethal sniper in military history. It is also possible people had more sniper kills than him, but one part of being in the military is you must record every confirmed kill, if it is not confirmed as dead it cannot be counted. Chris Kyle is said to have somewhere near 160 confirmed kills. He was known for many other things though too, besides his amount of kills, he is also known for having a strong faith in God. Another thing he was known for among SEALs in particular is his great acts of courage. Chris Kyle also had a servant heart, it ended up tragically killing him on February 2, 2013. Even after he finished his deployments he went back into helping people from the
Odysseus has all the qualities made to be a true hero. Not only did Odysseus fight on behalf of the Greeks in Troy (Trojan War), but everything he went through he learned a valuable lesson at the end; Odysseus endured so much during his journey going back to Ithaca but he never gave up on any of his principles. He also had good escape strategies, and he risked his life to save others. Imagine you being on the same journey Odysseus went through, do you honestly believe you would have survived? He made some minor mistakes along the way but nobody’s perfect. That’s why Odysseus is a hero because, he’s strong, and intelligent and was able to get out of sticky situations.
Odysseus: a hero in every way. He is a real man, skilled in the sports, handy with a sword and spear, and a master of war strategy. Most of the challenges and adventures in his return voyage from Troy show us this even if we had no idea of his great heroic stature and accomplishments in the Trojan war. I found in my reading of the Odyssey that most of the trials the gods place upon him are readily faced with heroic means. These challenges are not
A Texan to the core, Chris Kyle spent much of his early life training to be a cowboy, even competing in local rodeos during his final years of high school. When he was in his early twenties, he went to the local recruitment office to sign up to become a SEAL, and after months of grueling training, he became a SEAL sniper and was sent overseas to put the fear of God into the insurgents. His deeply- rooted patriotism lead to a strange love of the battlefield. During one intense battle, he recalls, “The pace was hot and heavy, it made us want more. We ached for it.” Kyle and his men each trained hard to become the best protectors of this nation that they could be, and they loved carrying out their duties. Patriotism is a huge factor in why Kyle
In one of the highest grossing films, American Sniper, directed by Clint Eastwood, told the story of Chris Kyle, who was pronounced the deadliest sniper in U.S. military history. Kyle was depicted as a war hero and showed magnificent up-bring to what he sees through the scope. His journey holds astonishing memories and real stories on how the sniper came to be. Unfortunately, being a historic figure is not all it’s made out to be. The positive outtake on American Sniper brought Kyle’s remarkable service to his country into the hearts of many.
Christopher Scott Kyle was born April 8, 1974 in Odessa, Texas, to Deby Lynn Mercer and Wayne Kenneth Kyle. He was a United States Navy SEAL veteran sniper. Before he joined the military he was a cowboy and professional bull rider. He would go out to rodeo’s and compete with his brother Jeff Kyle. After he gave up bull riding he joined the military and served 4 tours in Iraq. Most Iraqi Insurgents that hid from his deadly fire power referred to him as Al-Shaitan Ramad or The Devil Of Ramadi. The Iraqi
Overall, Odysseus is a hero because Odysseus is a clever and intelligent man, he is a courageous soldier and leader, and he is loyal to his crew. He never gives up even though it seems like nothing will go right. Odysseus fights against difficult odds and takes unimaginable risks, but stays loyal to his crew one hundred percent of the way. Odysseus is not only a model hero, but he is an epic
Odysseus’ journey was without a doubt a long and grueling one. Odysseus may have saved Ithaka, but his actions throughout his journey lead me to believe otherwise. Odysseus is an unappreciative, self-centered, lazy, and selfish man that does not deserve the title as hero. He acts this way solely because of his hubris, and he maintains his pride throughout the story. Odysseus’ hubris is the reason why it takes him so long to return home.
The main character of the Odyssey, Odysseus the King of Ithaca is given a complex personality to an extent where it is hard to identify whether he is a true hero or not. True heroism is only achieved when a person achieves certain qualities that portray heroism. Odysseus is not a hero based on the standards of merciful, selfless, and gentle because of his actions of sacrificing his men, killing the suitors and being ruthless throughout the Odyssey. Along with many others qualities these three are helpful and necessary in a hero. A hero must be willing to do service for others and put the needs of others safety and protection before his own. Odysseus does not even come close to matching these qualities because he is a person, who only serves of himself, and he sacrifices his allies to achieve his goals and often he takes action ruthlessly.
One of Chris Kyle’s many heroic abilities is his courageousness. It’s one of his many attributes because he had strength in the fear of pain and death. For example from the article “American Sniper: Was Chris Kyle really a hero” by BBC News it states that “Unsurpassed courage under fire while conducting sniper operations in support of [redacted] during the siege of Fallujah. His display of unparalleled
