“Decide in your heart of hearts what really excites and challenges you, and start mobbing your life in that direction,” was said by inspirational astronaut, Chris Hadfield. Hadfield was born in Canada with a dream of becoming an astronaut. Knowing how difficult this could be considering Canada did not have a space station, Hadfield never let that get in the way of achieving his goals. Starting off as a Royal Canadian Air Force fighter pilot, he took part in two space shuttle missions and later became a commander of the ISS (International Space Station). Later on in 1992, he joined the Canadian Astronaut Program, which allowed him to take on space for the first time in 1995. It may seem as if Hadfield had it anything short of smooth sailing on his journey to become an astronaut, but in his book “An Astronauts Guide to Life on Earth” he talks about all the struggles and sacrifices he had to make to get to his goal. Before graduating the military in 1981, Hadfield had gotten married. Shortly after getting married, he was shipped away to Saskatchewan for 18 months to start basic jet training with the Canadian Forces. It is a lifetime dedication to learn how to become an astronaut and they must truly love every second of it, just as Chris Hadfield has. Being such an inspiration, Hadfield talks about the hard, unexpected times. How the struggles helped him, and built him. He states in his book “An Astronauts Guide to Life on Earth” that, “It’s not how I envisioned things when I was 9 years old… But as it happens, I love my job- the day-to-day reality of it, not just the flying around in space part,” (page 37). Saying that being an astronaut is not just going to space and walking on the moon, it is intense studying for test and preparation in hopes of going to space, but still loving and looking forward to every step of the
