Chris McCandless was inspired by the stories he read about Jack London. In one of Jack London’s book, To Build A Fire, “You can’t wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club.” (London 40) Chris proved to his parents that there was nothing they could have done to stop him from going to Alaska. He had a heart bound to set itself free from boundaries and setbacks he held for himself. Instead of being a believer, he wanted to discover the outside world by himself without having others’ criticism thinking his actions were foolish. To Chris, his life meant living beyond the rules and expectations set by human society. By reading London's books, Chris was able incorporate the idea that London was also able to let go of his past and search for his future, he might as well follow his
Human's fears should not be taken lightly. Fear could do anything to one's minds, though without fear, man can be as savage as animals. In the book Lord of the Flies, William Golding presented fear of the unknown to be a powerful force in a man's mind. Fear of the unknown is a powerful force, which can turn to either insight or hysteria. The kids feared of not being rescued off of the island, so they made signal fires on top of the mountain. Then, there and gone, Roger's fear of the old rules he abided to. Also, there were the fears of the beast which confused and isolated the kids from the top of the mountain.
This was a very touching book. If one word had to be chosen to describe it, this word would be “real.” It was an extremely easy read, but was still able to hold value in its teaching and depth as Randy shared to the best of his ability what knowledge he thought to pass on. One
In The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night, Haddon suggests that with persistence people are able to achieve anything. We see this through Christopher’s persistence with the investigation and his success despite the fact that he has autism. One way in which Haddon demonstrates persistence is through the way Christopher strives to get his A level in maths. Christopher is having a conversation with Siobhan talking about how all the other kids in his school are stupid, but Christopher says "I am going to prove that I'm not stupid. Next month I'm going to take my A level in maths and I'm going to get an A grade." (44) Christopher states that even though of his disability it will not affect him and how hard he is going to try to get his A level.

Chris loves to challenge himself and after succeeding academically he finds purpose through self deprivation. Chris chooses Alaska because its' remote location makes it a challenging journey and destination. By surviving with as little equipment as possible he shows that happiness does not depend on comfort. His books give him the strength to continue traveling and are what inspires him to live in isolation. Before Chris's life ends he shows his happiness and satisfaction with his decisions by leaving a message and a quote from Robinson Jeffers poem. Chris McCandless is a role model for a young generation.
A young man, in his twenties, sets off into the wild completely disregarding his family and his past life and takes on a whole new personality. This perfectly explains Chris McCandless and the journey he initially set out on. He was a young man seeking self-acceptance and peace, and he looked for it in all of the different places that he visited. Visiting these places made Chris more and more hungry for a challenge. He planned on leaving the comfort of a home and setting out into the Alaskan wilderness, where he would eventually die.
“When you say 'fear of the unknown', that is the definition of fear; fear is the unknown, fear is what you do not know, and it's genetically within us so that we feel safe. We feel scared of the woods because we're not familiar with it, and that keeps you safe.” – M. Night Shyamalan
