The Last Dog “The Last Dog”, is a great story with an amazing, and true moral about following your instincts. It is written by Katherine Patterson. Although this story is an obvious fantasy, it can be used in real life to make difficult choices. Some choices are hard to make; however, sometimes we just know what the right choice is. Likewise, Brock instantly knew what to do in order to save Brog, his dog. Personally, this story was interesting to me because of the adoring affection Brock showed towards his loyal friend. The story starts when Brock, the main character, decides to go outside of the dome, or the uniform environment separate from the “so called” wasteland in the outside world. As he is descending from the safety of the dome, he finds a unique specimen, a dog. He was frightened at first, but daringly Brock returns him to …show more content…
He was born in a test tube along with many other pod fellows. Knowledge of the outside world was based on what the virtual books told them. Curiosity hit Brock when he discovered a few fairy tales in the dome library. The wonders inside them led him to wonder what the world was like today. Brog and Brock ended up living together in a world with green trees and delicious water; however, “The Last Dog”, was set in the distant future controlled by a uniform environment. When Brock said “I won’t hurt you”, to the puppy he was excited that he met his long last friend like in the stories he read, Huck Finn and M.C. Higgins. Brock could not let his dog be poked and prodded at until he could not take it anymore. Also, in my opinion, knowing your feelings on a screen can help you cope with what you really need and what is not necessary. As an example, Brock knew that he needed something to fill the void in his heart and the solution was a cute and loveable dog. I think that all Brock needed was a little bit of

Harrison Scott Key, who was published in Best Travel Writing 2014, wrote about his travels on one of America’s infamous modes of transportation, the Greyhound Bus. In “Fifty Shades of Greyhound”, Key begins his memoir by recalling the first time he had ever ridden on a greyhound. He wanted to go see West Yellowstone, Montana and despite his friends questioning his sanity and his mother believing that he will die, he left. The narrator returned several days later, promising his mother he would never do anything like that again, eighteen years later he broke that promise. He begins his essay in a Greyhound station in Savannah.
Around the world it is acceptable to eat certain animals depending on one’s culture. “The French, who love their dogs, sometimes eat their horses. The Spanish, who loves their horses, sometimes eat their cows. The Indians, who love their cows, sometimes eat their dogs” (Foer 604). “Let Them Eat Dog” is an excerpt from Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer. The excerpt explains the many benefits to eating dogs and the taboo behind it. The author also uses humor, imagery and emotional appeal to get across to the reader the logic of eating dogs. One chooses to eat meat based on what the culture deems acceptable. Foer questions why culture deems certain animals acceptable to be eaten, and illustrates why it should be acceptable to eat dogs. Mark Haddon’s book The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime mirrors the idea that trust is the glue that holds relationships together and how a lack of honesty and truth can create barriers between loved ones and shows how being honest can fix these problems. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime is a innovative and ground breaking novel that continues to show the understanding of the world by Christopher Boone and his
I’ve always felt that animals are the purest spirits in the world. They don’t fake or hide their feelings, and they are the most loyal creatures on Earth and somehow we humans think we’re smarter. I chose this topic about the canine because, some of these canines risk their life’s to protect dog’s best friend.
Canine tales are becoming an ever-more-popular medium for expression, says Garber: “Just as the pathos of human love and loss is most effectively retold, in modern stories, through the vehicle of the steadfastly loyal and loving dog, so the human hero has increasingly been displaced and replaced by the canine one” (44). The spotlight has been shifted from the larger-than-life human to the humble family pet and his canine brethren. Stories that feature a dog rather than a person are able to more convey a deeper sense of meaning, establishing their...
Take a moment and picture a dog in your head. What do you see? You may see many different things depending on your own personal encounters with the species. There are many types of dogs out there. Some small, some large, long-haired or short-haired. There are many variances in what a dog can look like. One thing that does not change, or should not change, is the importance for every dog in this world to be given love and affection, no matter its characteristics. This is what leads me to believe that the obsession with producing and owning purebreds needs to come to a halt. Continuing to create these so-called “best dogs” is dangerous to not only the purebred’s health, but also devalues mixed breeds and can cost them their lives in animal shelters where they may never escape. My interest in this topic caused me to look into seeing what other people felt about it.
"The Hidden Life Of Dogs" was not just any book. Clearly there was much more
The story starts in Santa Clara Valley, California where we find Buck, a St. Bernard and Scotch Collie mix. At the moment Buck is owned by a man named Judge Miller; sadly, he’s not owned by him for very long. A gardener’s assistant steals Buck and uses him to pay off a gambling debt. Buck is sent off to Seattle in extremely harsh conditions. He is unfed and taunted the whole time he is in this crate he was shipped in. Once he arrives, he is horribly malnourished and is starving; but furious. He is released and charges at a man, but the man slams him in the side with a club and repeatedly does it as Buck tries and tries again. In this way Buck learns “the law of the club” as he refers to it. Buck is then sold to two French men, Francois and Perrault, and they bring him to the Klondike region of Canada and train him there to be a sled dog. As he is transitioning into this new life, whether he likes it or not, he is being dominated by another sled dog named Spitz. Eventually Buck decides he’s had enough and challenges Spitz to a fight. Spitz proudly and happily takes the offer and in the end, dies in the fight. Buck is next owned by a Scottish half-breed who is working in mail-service delivering items to the mining areas. He is then owned by a lousy group of inexperienced couple and brother-in-law. They travel foolishly ignoring signs of danger and overfeed their dogs in the beginning...
There has been much said about the relationship between humans and dogs. Some believe that dogs are a man’s best friend, while others believe that dogs are meant only to be used to perform a certain job. Even though some see dogs only as a tool, dogs have been known to help humans in times of despair and need. Whether it be a dog helping a disabled person, or searching for a human amongst a pile of rubble, dogs can be a key factor when it comes to the well being of humans. In enormous tragedies, such as September 11th, dogs were a key element in piecing back together the parts of America that the terrorists had destroyed when they administered the attacks. Dogs are able to bring unity and support in times of tragedy. While both the working dogs and firemen contributed to the restoration of 9/11, the dogs that helped in the aftermath of the attacks were needed for much more than locating trapped victims; they were needed for support, unity, and comfort as well.
Is dog's worth to humans simply as man's best friend? Throughout history, dogs have been protectors, companions, and pets. However, science is saying that there is much more to these creatures. "Dogs Read Human Expressions", by The Huff Post, and "The Doctor's Dog Will See You Now", by Melinda Beck explain the scientific connection between dogs and humans. Science shows that dog's interaction with humans makes them more than just pets because dogs interact like human children and canines assist in various forms of human therapy.
At this time, gold had been found in Alaska, and thousands of men were rushing to the Northland. They wanted dogs, dogs like Buck. One night, Manuel, the estate's gardener, who felt he was not earning enough to support both his family and his gambling habits, took Buck for a walk to the railroad station. There, money was exchanged, a rope was placed around Buck's neck, and his life in the civilized world had come to an end.
Fast Forward a little while and the dog is drafted to do what he was born to do-a military dog sniffing out bombs. Now he has a new master, but he is always working. Even in down time, every ones on edge. Being in war can really stress a dog out.
