A & P is a store in the neighborhood more like a supermarket. The major activities that are taking place in the A & P are shopping and buying of goods and items. The author, Updike narrates a story that is happening in the A & P stores where three girls come in to get some shopping items. However, it appears that there are some norms that the society expects one to have and follow while carrying out different tasks. It is no exceptional to A & P as when the three girls come in the store; they immediately catch the attention of all the individuals in the premise. For example, it is now a general term to hear individuals say that you should dress in a manner that you would wish to be addressed. It only implies that if one dresses scantily, then it will be no doubt that he or she will be treated in a scanty manner (Gordon 1). Furthermore, occasions have different codes of dressing, and it is important to obey the laws. In A & P, the chivalry is the decency in dressing while at the stores building. It is a requirement for all individuals who hop in to do shopping in the shop to be in the modest clothes that will not cause destructions to other shoppers. When Lengel sees the ladies dressed in their bathing suits at the supermarket, he is quick to remind them of the code dressing. "Girls, I don't want to argue with you. After this come in here with your shoulders covered. It's our policy." The significance of this chivalry is that it helps to maintain discipline while undertaking shopping duties. Furthermore, the stores are usually filled with all kinds of people including children and having a decent dressing will prevent installing dangerous behaviors to children. These characters are usually chivalry characters that help boost the confidence of the individual (Robert, 1). Reading the story by Updike shows one of the Chivalry acts that caught my attention. Three ladies who were in their bathing suits after picking up the items they were to pick at the A & P store, walk to the counter to pay for the goods. An awkward situation emerges in the payment section. Lengel, who is the manager of A & P, tells the girls that their dressing is appropriate for the beach areas and not the shopping malls. The situation causes attention to other shoppers as Lengel tries to pass his point across. Everyone now had put their activities aside and were concentrating on the job. After the girls had left, Sammy, who was to the payment section where the whole incidence was occurring, took a bold step and decided to quit the job at A & P. Sammy, therefore, exhibited a chivalry act in the event. Sammy held the idea that Lengel did not address the matter in the right way. The bold act of courage is significant as it will ensure that when such cases emerge, a proper way of handling them will be already in place.
