In the past century the industrialization which was driven only by economic motives, has demolished the stability of the biosphere. So in today’s world “sustainability “in all aspects of life is very essential to make the world a better place to live. According to Mahatma Gandhi, known as “Father of India”,” The Earth has everything to meet human needs not all human greed”. “Sustainability” means “Take nothing and do no harm”. According to Ray Anderson, one of the green CEOs of America, all business with a no sustainable model is doing a theft (Anderson, 2009, 3:05) because they are stealing the resources of the future generation. The illiterate women from the local villages joined the protest when they realized that the main products of forests were pure air, soil and water instead of wood and revenue (Shiva, 2013, 4:27). This movement was also a pioneer of all environmental movements in developing countries where the awareness level was very low. The Chipko movement was followed by many protests like “Sound of Nature” (against the Silent Valley hydroelectric project), “Jungle Bachao Andolan” (means forest protection movement), “Save Western Ghats”. In response to the all these movements, government of India passed the Forest conservation act of 1980. But the mining industry in India continue to be a threat to the forest conservation activities. Many protests like “The Narmada Bachao Andolan (1985)” and “Save Ganga movement” were initiated to protect major rivers in India (Malhotra, 2008, para 12). The degradation of these rivers also affected the underwater availability in many places. The economic liberalization in 1991 enabled the entry of global beverage giants like Coca Cola and PepsiCo which accelerated the misuse of ground water. The protest against the Coca cola Company started in Plachimada in Kerala, which is the southern state of India, and it expanded to other parts of the Country which forced the company to close many of its plants across India.
The major stake holders in developing sustainable development in India are the government of India, Supreme Court of India and various national and International NGO’s.
