In my research project, I choose to explore Chinese Americans’ and Russian Americans’ migration history and experiences during 1850 to 2014, and the location is San Francisco. Reasons for choosing Chinese Americans are first I’m a Chinese so I care about the history of my own ethnicity; also as a major conponent of Asian Americans which is the fastest incresing immigration group nowdays, the understanding of the history and the analysis of the immigration experiences could facilitate the assimilation of Chinese Americans. Another group I choose is Russian Americans, because many Russian immigrants first landed on San Francisco too, however they share different experiences of immigration life due to races and reasons of emigration. For the location, myl focus is San Francisco, because this was the main entance to America for many Chinese and Russians in early migration time, so it is an important place to trace the very beginning of Chinese and Russian Americans’ immigration lives. Finally, the time period I choose is 1850 to 2014, because in 1850 Chinese started to immigrate to America to build the railroad, and in 1882 the Chinese Exclusion law was passed in America so the comparison of migrations before and after the law could help us understand the topic better.
San Francisco belongs to California state in America and located on the west coast of American continent connecting to Pacific ocean, so it has been an important entrance for many ships from east to America including China, Japan, Korea, Russia, etc. California used to belong to Spain and Mexico, until 1848 America won California after United States war with Mexico. At the same year in 1848, gold was found accidently in Sutter’s Mill, California, and the gold rush att...

...nments. Finally, I expect to know the current situation of Chinese immigrants, what unique features they have comparing to other ethnic people and local Chinese people.
The sources I may use including the following:The Children of China Town: Growing Up Chinese American in San Francisco by Wendy R Jorae. Angel Island: Immigrant Gateway to America by Erika Lee. These two books could provide me background information about Chinese and Russian immigrantion experience at early time and reasons for their migrations. Besides books, I contacted several Chinese second generation immigrants, so I will interview these people about their immigration experiences. However I don’t have access to a three generation Chinese immigration family, so I will keep searching through my relatives and friends, but I will use mostly books and articles to get early immigration information.
...ork during the construction of the transcontinental railroad. The immigration and race relation were also important themes in relation to the major events during the time such as Civil War and aftermath of Industrial revolution. Up to date immigration is still experienced in America, especially due to its increase in economy. Similarly, there are still various racial discontents among the ethnic groups In United State today.
In Barbara Berlund’s Making San Francisco American: Cultural Frontiers in the Urban West, Berlund explains how San Francisco grew from a young settlement which grew rapidly thanks to in part of the California Gold Rush which took place in 1949. Of course with the growing of this small settlement came it’s conflicts and how it rised to where it stands present day. A primary factor which helped San Francisco flourish a ton was the influence from those who had power and chose what would happen throughout the city, for example the Big 4. Those who were wealthy did not make this city what it is today without the help of people who made up the middle class as well. Every establishment within this city set the social order as to how the inhabitants of San Francisco would go about their life in society.
This investigation is designed to explore to what extent did attitudes toward the Chinese immigrants during the building of the transcontinental railroad differ from those towards Irsih immigrants? To assess the attitudes toward the Chinese immigrants, this study focuses on the building of the transcontinental railroad in the United States in the second half of the nineteenth century. This study investigates the views, tasks given during the building of the railroad, and benefits given to the Chinese and Irish immigrants and the impact of their work on the views toward each group of immigrants.
Immigration has existed around the world for centuries, decades, and included hundreds of cultures. Tired of poverty, a lack of opportunities, unequal treatment, political corruption, and lacking any choice, many decided to emigrate from their country of birth to seek new opportunities and a new and better life in another country, to settle a future for their families, to work hard and earn a place in life. As the nation of the opportunities, land of the dreams, and because of its foundation of a better, more equal world for all, the United States of America has been a point of hope for many of those people. A lot of nationals around the world have ended their research for a place to call home in the United States of America. By analyzing primary sources and the secondary sources to back up the information, one could find out about what Chinese, Italians, Swedish, and Vietnamese immigrants have experienced in the United States in different time periods from 1865 to 1990.
The California Gold Rush in 1849 was the catalyst event for the state that earned them a spot in the U.S. union in 1850. This was not the first gold rush in North America; however, it was one of the most important gold rush events. The story of how the gold was discovered and the stories of the 49ers are well known. Men leaving their families in the East and heading West in hopes of striking it rich are the stories that most of us heard about when we learn about the California Gold Rush. Professors and scholars over the last two decades from various fields of study have taken a deeper look into the Gold Rush phenomena. When California joined the Union in 1850 it helped the U.S. expand westward just as most Americans had intended to do. The event of the Gold Rush can be viewed as important because it led to a national railroad. It also provided the correct circumstances for successful entrepreneurship, capitalism, and the development modern industrialization. The event also had a major influence on agriculture, economics, and politics.
During the Gold Rush of 1848-1849, California began to experience a large wave of Chinese immigration to the United States. Stories of the discovery of gold at Sutter’s Mill drew thousands of Chinese immigrants into North America from various parts of Asia. These immigrants, who were primarily poor peasants, flooded the “Golden Hills” we know as California in pursuit of better economic opportunity. To fill in the needs of the increasingly widespread mining communities in the West, many Chinese immigrants ultimately became merchants, railroad workers, agricultural laborers, mining laborers, and factory workers. Throughout the Gold Rush, members of the Chinese labor force played significant roles in both the social and economic development of the American West, particularly with regards to the construction of the transcontinental railroad.
The Asian-Americans settlement patterns were shaped by many decades of economic and social development in the United States. Since the Asian-American group is so large, it is often discussed in different ethnic subgroups. These various ethnic groups have many faced different struggles upon settling in America. Some of these struggles include significant racial discrimination in the workplace, low wages, and harassment, and violence. Despite the differences, most of these immigrants were drawn to America for better career and educational opportunities. Nevertheless, these immigrants have made numerous sacrifices, such as leaving their homeland in order to provide the best support for themselves and their family. The differences in settlement patterns over time can be seen through the ethnic groups: Chinese Americans, Filipino Americans, and Japanese
I'm sure everyone has seen them. The pants so tight they appear to be painted on. But then they realize, they're not actually pants, merely relatively thick tights masquerading as pants. Suddenly they're thinking, surely these women forgot to put on the bottom half of their outfits. Notwithstanding, this abomination was completely intentional. Women are now wearing leggings in the stead of pants, which is one fashion trend that our community, and the world at large, could do without. Although undoubtedly comfortable, and completely acceptable when worn under dresses, skirts, long shirts, and shorts, leggings are not the most flattering article of clothing when worn in lieu of pants. When worn incorrectly, leggings draw attention to the negative aspects of the wearers body. People can see every jiggle of the thighs and butt, every dimple of cellulite, and every crevice of a person's anatomy. Generally speaking, most females would not want to promulgate these details of their bodies, but todays young women apparently thrive on displaying them for the world to see.
During the late 1840's California did not show much promise or security. It had an insecure political future, its economic capabilities were severely limited and it had a population, other than Indians, of less than three thousand people. People at this time had no idea of what was to come of the sleepy state in the coming years. California would help boost the nation's economy and entice immigrants to journey to this mystical and promising land in hopes of striking it rich.
This is the period of the Gold Rush. Reasons why this event was so impeccable, to the development of California, are the years leading up to the discovery, the first findings, the journey, and so much more. Americans, inspired by the idea of manifest destiny meaning it was their God given right to rule the entire, mass, amount of land from ocean to ocean. Thanks to this vision, it quickly sent current land occupiers, California, Mexico, and the United States in two completely different directions. In 1846, Mexican soldiers rose up against United States forces.

This essay will discuss the issue of migration in South California, Los Angeles. This subject is very topical and affects many people. Why thousands of people immigrate to the city? Why other leave Los Angeles? There are a lot of reasons: economic, social, environmental and others. Arguments and all information will be analyzed thoroughly.
California started its statehood unlike any other state before or after it succession. California entered the nation as a free state in 1950, during the time of the Gold Rush. From the Gold Rush came the term “California Dream” which is the “psychological motivation to gain fast wealth or fame in a new land” (Manhattan-Institute.org). From the time of the Gold Rush up until recent years, California has been associated with obtaining fast wealth and fame. This encouraged people from all over the world to come to California in hopes of striking it rich, just as people continued to do up until the 90's. The discovery of gold in California in 1848 immensely accelerated certain changes that had been in the making for decades. For instance, California was already filled with different races and cultures, but when the Gold Rush struck, California became an international frontier where people from every continent were joining together. “California also set an important precedent for civil societies with diverse populations” (page 121). By 1850, California was flooded with over 300,000 people seeking gold. The fact that California has always attracted so many different people has created a land filled with many languages, cultures, and social customs. “The arrival and departure of thousan...
When the Chinese were immigrating to the United States in the 1880’s. There was as many as 75,000 Chinese immigrants. Most Chinese immigrants moved to the United States to avoid starvation, because in china they didn’t eat much because there wasn’t much to eat in China. Some moved just to seek an adventure, because many Chinese had never been to the United States. In the 1840s and 1850s, China was hit with a series of natural disasters. One disaster that china suffered was in 1847, Henen suffered a substantial draught. Then two years later, a famine struck Guangxi. The provinces of Hubei, Anhui, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang were flooded by the Yangtze River . The Taiping Revolution from 1850 to 1864, caused partially by flood and famine in Guangdong, disturbed the land and the created a financial problem for the people.
For many people, the words “bra-burner” and “feminist” are synonymous, with both terms often holding negative connotations. It is easy for one to see how the “feminist” could arouse negative feelings in a patriarchal society such as today’s, but what is it about that other little alliteration that causes people to recoil in disgust? Going braless in today’s day and age is a taboo reinforced by men, women, and the brassiere itself. Aside from being largely unnecessary and uncomfortable, these garments reinforce the sexualization and objectification of women’s bodies by holding the woman’s body in an unnatural shape, concealing the nipples, and supporting, or displaying, breasts.
