Adeline, from the novel Chinese Cinderella, has many hardships and difficulties in her life, particularly abuse, neglect and loss. It’s clear that she never gives in and is always able to overcome these difficulties, with her determination and resilience, her optimistic and hopeful attitude, the support from loved ones and her imagination. By using these strategies, Adeline is able to push through her troubles and eventually win in the end. Adeline’s determination and resilience are two of her most important qualities. It’s her determination to prove herself, and her resilience, her ability to bounce back, that helps her cope with the struggles thrown upon her, such as abuse, neglect and separation from loved ones. dies at the jaws of the family dog Jackie, Adeline is able to use determination and resilience to recover, and to continue on with strength. “I don’t know why, but I feel as if it’s the two of us against the world. Whatever happens, we must never let them win.” Another good example of this attribute is when Adeline is elected class president, just days after being both verbally and physically abused by Niang and her father. “What did it matter that I was a disgrace to my parents? How could anyone full of bad blood be elected class president?” Her determination to prove her worth also shows when she enters the play writing competition and wins, gaining pride from her father. “So I was quite pleased to tell him you are my daughter. Well done.” After this compliment, Adeline gets permission to attend university with her brothers. “ Please Father, may I go to university in England too, just like my brothers?” Through these examples, it’s obvious to the reader that Adeline is able to use her determination and resilience to help her overcome her difficulties. It seems clear in Chinese Cinderella that Adeline is able to cope with her hardships by maintaining a hopeful and optimistic attitude.
By using her optimism she is able to try and see the good in any situation, and her hopefulness encourages her to keep going, that one day things will get better. After Fourth Brother tries to send three heavy books on to Ye Ye’s head, Adeline’s hopefulness is obvious. “It’s bound to get better. One day things will be different. Life won’t go on like this forever. I don’t know when, how or what but I’ll come back and rescue you from this. I promise.” Just by thinking these words Adeline was able to comfort herself, a new feeling of optimism for her and Ye Ye. Adeline’s hopefulness also shows at boarding school in Hong Kong, where she is first in the mail line, waiting and hoping for letters that never come. “Never gets any letters either, although she’s always first in line when the mail gets delivered.” Another example of her optimism and hopefulness is when she and her friends are talking on the balcony at the end of term. “More than anything, I yearn to grow up, get out of here and see the world. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the three of us could sail away on one those big boats...?” Adeline shows very clearly that she has a hopeful and optimistic attittude to help get her through the hard
times. The support Adeline receives from the few family members that love her is immensely helpful to her as she overcomes the obstacles in her life.Love from Aunt Baba, Ye Ye and Third Brother (most of the time) really helps her remain optimistic and determined to push through. Aunt Baba shows Adeline the love and care she needs after PLT dies. “Quick! Take this opportunity while Jackie’s away! Run down and bury your pet in the garden...” Throughout the novel, Aunt Baba always compliments Adeline with pride, always reminding her of her amazing qualities and worth.
Faye is fighting to re-home animals that have been abandoned and abused. Since 2012 she has re-homed more than 60 dogs, and about 20 kittens. Faye says, “I would do anything no matter what to save one animal.” It’s as if her whole entire life revolves around saving animals. Faye thinks just by adopting an animal you can help animal abandonment. Also, Faye has her own book on why animal abandonment isn’t good. Although Faye thinks her job is stressful, she thinks it’s easy because she enjoys doing her job and helping animals find a home.

In the novel “Speak” by Laurie Halse-Anderson, the main character Melinda, faces a few different types of adversity. One form of adversity that she faces is that she was sexually assaulted. Another type of adversity that Melinda goes through in this novel is that she loses all her friends and starts to lose her family as well. Adeline doesn’t get much support from her family, except for two, Aunt Baba and Yeye. With the constant depressing situations in the book, Adeline has been blessed with two people who actually care. Aunt Baba and Yeye actually want to encourage Adeline to do her best because unlike the other members in her family, they do not treat her as just an unwanted child. In the novel, Chinese Cinderella, by Adeline Yen Mah, Adeline is greatly supported by Ye Ye and Aunt Baba although out the book and I do not believe that she would've succeeded without them.
Celie has never been happier, even though the odds were always against her, she managed to overcome and persevere through it. She becomes friends with Mr.__ rather than a forced relationship and the two are much happier this way. Celie’s story is very moving and well told, it shows even the most oppressed people can and will persevere if they put their mind to it, and if they allow other people to influence them in positive ways. Walker illustres to us Celie’s final thoughts, “And us so happy. Matter of fact, I think this the youngest us ever felt.” (294). Adeline Yen Mah’s literary skills explain comprehensively how Niang’s flawed personality cause great agony for Adeline. However, it is being mistreated by Niang that ultimately fuels her to undertake the seemingly impossible task of trying to succeed in life. Adeline’s great accomplishments in life were the result of her unfaltering determination in the face of injustice. Niang inadvertently helped her achieve that.
The mood and tone of the story are extremely strong because of the way the story is written and the words used. Even though there are numerous occasions where the characters go through rough times, somehow the story is still light hearted. The author used examples such as ``They dropped gracefully from nowhere, like two sparkling birds`` and ``It was the friendliest tap, a bit tentative, as if she was afraid she had arrived too early at a friends house``. These quotes and many others in the story use generally positive words even though they are setting the scene for an incident. The message the author is giving the reader is that there is always something positive to look forward to even if you are going through hard times. In like manner, the author describes the activities the characters in the story do in order to get past what they have been through. For example, when the daughter says ``She finally learned to read and write, as a way of overcoming boredom and depression of those weeks, and it was my father who insisted on teaching her, ``. Correspondingly, even though her husband passed away in the circus, she went to the hospital where she fell in love all over again. It was the incident in the circus that brought the daughters parents together, which the daughter is clearly grateful for as well when she says ``I owe my existence, the second time then, to the two of them and the hospital that brought
Our world, and lives, are full of trials and tribulations. Its our choices, actions, or lack thereof when facing these difficulties that influence the direction of our lives. Rene Denfeld explores this wonderfully in her novel The Enchanted. Her characters all face trials, of varying degrees of intensity, that not only shape them but also the direction of their lives. She delves into this process thoroughly through her character of the white-haired boy. He transforms from an optimistic boy, to a hollow victim of abuse and a corrupt penal system, and finally into a man who did what was necessary to survive.
No matter how bad things may seem, there is always hope for things to ameliorate. When people believe that the future will be promising, they can have something to look forward to as opposed to dwelling on the past or the problems of the present. This hope can give a person a positive outlook on life and motivate him or her to look past what is happening in the present. A genuine fairytale is said to have the element of, “A innocent character [placed against] the evil character who normally loses somehow,” (Gokturk) which is seen as Cinderella is chosen by the prince over the evil step-sisters at the ball. As human beings with a developed moral system, it has been seen that the more deserving, mistreated character is favored to succeed in the story. Cinderella is seen as this “underdog” character in her quest to find love with the prince and overcome her step-sisters’ mistreatment. As Cinderella is mistreated by her new family, sympathy is built for the emerging protagonist and hope of her to conquer her situation follows. The underdog of this story grows in favorability to be picked by the prince due to the societal belief that the more deserving candidate should overcome their opposition.
