Chinese Cinderella Courage Quotes

Muhammad Ali once said, “He who is not courageous enough to takes risks will accomplish nothing in life.” This quote is important to the story, because it relates to how Adeline took courageous risks to help herself and her peers. In the story Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah, Adeline compares herself to Mulan. Adeline courageously stands up for herself while facing many verbal and physical battles. Adeline is truly an inspirational character and will take many risks to protect the things she cares about.

Adeline fights for respect from her family and never gives up even when all odds are against her. In the story Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah, Adeline compares herself to the brave and courageous Mulan. For example, in the beginning of the Mulan movie, Mulan causes a huge ruckus with the other troops. This causes the other soldiers to seek revenge. Adeline has similar circumstances.

For example, when Little Sister comes home and is beaten by Niang, Adeline stands up for Little Sister causing a not-so-pleasant reaction from Niang. “I shall never forgive you! Never! Never! Never! You’d better watch out from now on! You will pay for your arrogance! (Yen Mah 35) Another example would be in Mulan when she failed her test to see if she is fit to be a bride. Mulan was told that she was a disgrace to her family. This is similar to when Adeline was told she was bad Luck. For example, Big Sister was telling Adeline telling that she was bad luck. She said, “But then Mama died giving birth to you. If you had not been born, Mama would still be alive. She died because of you. You are bad luck.” (Yen Mah 11 )So once again, Adeline fights for her rights and that is why Adeline compares herself to Mulan.

Adeline uses her gut and her brave soul to fight for what she deserves.

In the story Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah, Adeline's “battles” require courage and determination. Adeline needs to apply courage to her everyday life whether it is just taking the pain and moving forward or standing up for what she believes in. For instance, when little sister was getting beaten by Niang, Adeline stuck with what was right and stood up. “Quaking terror I blurted out, Don't beat her anymore. She's just a baby. My protest seemed to halt Niang in the midst of her protest. Little sister's screams simmered to a whisper.” (Yen Mah 34) Another example that required courage was when she was to be separated from her Aunt Baba. “The thought of being separated from my aunt filled me with dread. Somberly, I climbed the stairs and went back to the room and shared with her perhaps for the last time.” (Yen Mah 118) This shows how Adeline has enough self control to pick her battles and enough courage to follow through when

needed.

Adeline was physically, verbally, and emotionally abused. In the story Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah, Adeline endures many battles. For example, Wu Chun-Mei reacted to one of the battles, “One by one they trooped out leaving their gifts by my side. Wu Chun-mei lingered and was the last to go. As she went passed the stairway, she shouted to the Holy of Hollies, “This is unfair. You are cruel and barbaric. I'm telling my father.” (Yen Mah 116) This displays Adeline’s unfair treatment. Unfortunately, this is just one of the many battles that she endured. Finally, Adeline isn't treated like a daughter should be. “The dangers are very real. Niang loathes me. As for father, he doesn't really care. He hardly knows I exist remembering neither my name nor my date of birth. To him I don't matter.” (Yen Mah 122) Adeline has many problems to sort out and faces many scaring battles that force her to raise herself due to the lack of parental guidance.

Adeline takes risks to protect friends, family, and self. She uses courage to fight many battles just as Mulan did. Adeline is just like Mulan in many ways. They both have had times where people don't believe in them and they both have proved them wrong. Also, Adeline fights many courageous battles against her family whether it is emotionally/verbally or physically. Adeline has many emotional and physical scars from past battles and feels as if she is nothing. However, she continues to fight. Finally, Adeline's battles and risks required a boatload of courage. Adeline fought for what she believed was right, even when the odds were marked against her. Adeline is a very beautiful girl on the inside and out and she is ready to courageously take a stand for what she believes in at all times.
