Children Of The River The Children Of The River book had (at first) taken place in Cambodia. In the country of Cambodia, there was a small fishing village. This small village was called “Ream”. It started out with people in the household of Tep Naro thought the New Year has brought good fortune to them. But all of that had went away when they heard gun shells drop. The Communist had started to raid the village. After the raid Sundara (the main character) had left the country with her aunt, her grandmother, her uncle, and her two younger cousins. They moved to the United States and to the state of Oregon. Sundara has moved to a school called Kennedy High School. In class they were reading out poems that each of the student have written. Later on in the book, Sundara meets this really nice guy who happens to be into her. His name was Jonathan. Jonathan’s feelings has soon became Sundara’s feelings as well. Jonathan ended up asking her out but Sundara had to explain to him about her cultures custom about their marriage arrangements and how they weren’t allowed to date. That didn’t stop Jonathan though. They ended up hanging out. But soon after. Sundara’s aunt and uncle went out to the market and Jonathan came to her house when she told him loud and clear, that Khmer women cannot be alone with boys and there’s this whole myth for the Khmerians that if an adult pats a child’s head, that it would make them stupider and when Jonathan arrived, he went inside and patted Pon’s (one of Sundara’s cousins) and shortly afterwards, her aunt and uncle returned to find Jonathan in their house and they were NOT happy. They immediately kicked him out and reminded Sundara about their traditions and punished her. They told her that she was never allowed to talk/ hang out with Jonathan..
