Children Need to be Restricted from Technology
Children need to be bored in order to grow and become creative thinkers. Over use of technology decreases that growth. When a child is bored they start to think, explore, learn, and problem solve. The issue with the over use of technology is that children are not getting enough of a chance to be bored, thus creating a generation of children that expect things to happen immediately, who don’t know how to explore, that are less creative, and not competent problem solvers.
To understand why being bored is a good thing we must first know what it means to be bored. Family psychologist Micheal Ungar Ph. D states: “boredom is a temporary state, it is a lack of stimulation and the unpleasant feelings that come along with it.” When children are bored they have a desire to fill that void of stimulation. This is a good desire. The problem lies in what fills that void, or rather what continually fills that void. If that void is constantly being filled with technology like a smart phone or tablet the child is missing out on opportunities to discover what interests them and earn problem solving skills. While this is correct, the problem lies in the over use of this form of entertainment. Only allowing a child to occasionally use technology to cure bored is ok, however when a child always turns to technology to solve the issue of boredom problems arise. Author Infancia Cardozo published an article in 2015 where she brought up the statement that “The smarter the toy, the less challenged the child.” Cardozo goes on to say that “Tech overuse, in particular, smartphone and tablet overuse, among toddlers according to many researchers may stunt social-emotional and language development and problem-solving
Can you imagine how children do not seem to have any problems in learning how technology works now? It happens that almost every kid has their own laptop, cell phone, iPads or any other electronic devices. Who does not want to live in this world where doing homeworks and making your job much easier, right? If children nowadays are too lucky to have and learn these things while they are young, most of us grew up and experienced the life without technology. In "My Technologically Challenged Life" by Monica Wunderlich, she talked about the different struggles she had experienced in her house, school, workplace, and her car due to the lack of technology.
Boredom was everywhere in my world, and if you asked the kids, as often as I did, why they felt so bored, they always gave me the same answers: They said the work was stupid, that it made no sense, that they already knew it. They said they wanted to be doing something real, not just sitting around. They said teachers didn’t seem to know much about their subjects and clearly weren’t interested in learning more. Students become more engaged in lessons when he/ she is interested. Using the previous example about my small teachers excitement to use the chromebook showed his level of motivation. Also during this lesson, he was very interested in watching the videos their teacher allowed them to watch.
Due to this argument, parents and children now heavily rely on technology for a main source of play, limiting the challenges of all creativity and imagination (Rowan 3). Although technology can provide some games and tools that can help children learn, it does not provide the same benefits as actual play and actually causes more harm than good. One of the main problems with play through technology is the fact that children are seeing a “symbolic representation of the real world” and are not receiving a direct experience of the real world with real people and materials (Rice 3). The more time children spend looking at a screen, the more they are isolating themselves and not spending time with other children and adults (Rice 3). This is not only damaging to the learning development of a child, but also the healthy development of forming relationships and social skills (Rice 3). According to a 2010 Kaiser Foundation study, children who are in elementary school use on average 7.5 hours per day of entertainment technology and spending this much “screen time” is damaging to the development of children because their “sensory, motor, and attachment systems have biologically not evolved to accommodate this
Many people have a wide range of opinions on whether technology is having a positive influence on our children or a negative, there is a vast amount of evidence to support both of these arguments. Technology can refer to so many things, but there are three main parts of technology that have the greatest effect on our children: video games, television/media, and computers. The modern technologies we have today are so powerful because they attract our genetic biases, that the human brain has a tremendous love for visually presented information. Video games, television, movies and computer programs are all very visually oriented and therefore they attract and keep the attention of children easily. By far the largest concern of technology today is video games.
Technology is so easy for the youth to access and there are many things that affect children through the use of technology. Children can misuse technology by accessing inappropriate materials, most kids today have smart phones and are able to access this so easily. Another reason children are affected by technology is that they are never taught how to properly use it, so they begin to think what they are doing is okay, when it is not, at a young age. My generation is more prone to the misuse of technology because they have grown up with it and it has been apart of their childhood. As technology becomes more developed it will be more vibrant in children’s lives and as they grow up it will become more of a part of their childhood. The more it is in a child’s life the more it will become more known. I did not receive a phone until I was 14 and it was not even an IPhone, but today there are children who have IPhones at the age of 8. This affects children because they are becoming more dependant on technology as a young child and they think that it is alright to depend on technology. They are given technology and they do not know how to use it properly nor do they know that it is not okay for them to depend on technology and that they need to depend on their minds to do things not just technology. This not only causes children to lack the physical activity they need, but the social activity as well. Technology can cause social isolation in children. Although social media keeps individuals updated, it keeps them more “distant” and “lonely” in their phoneless lives (Price).
Almost every child between the ages of eight and twelve are getting cell phones. The average home in America has as many televisions as they do people. Only 20% of American homes do not have a computer. Technology is quickly becoming a new way of life. The amount of time people are on their devices is growing rapidly. According to The Huffington Post, people are on their devices for on average about eleven hours and fifty-two minutes a day. That is almost half a day and a lot longer than most people sleep or work. People have not realized yet how they or their families are being affected by this constant use of technology. As a result of technology increasing, children are experiencing health problems, school issues, and social problems.
As disclosed in the article, The Impact of Technology on the Developing Child, Chris Rowan acknowledges, “Rather than hugging, playing, rough housing, and conversing with children, parents are increasingly resorting to providing their children with more TV, video games, and the latest iPads and cell phone devices, creating a deep and irreversible chasm between parent and child” (par. 7). In the parent’s perspective, technology has become a substitute for a babysitter and is becoming more convenient little by little. It is necessary for a growing child to have multiple hours of play and exposure to the outside world each day. However, the number of kids who would rather spend their days inside watching tv, playing video games, or texting is drastically increasing. Children are not necessarily the ones to be blamed for their lack of interest in the world around them, but their parents for allowing their sons and daughters to indulge in their relationship with technology so powerfully. How much technology can improve or distract from these essential skills varies with age. The impact and implications of technology tools on young children has been studied and researched through the Let’s Move Childcare initiative and results concluded that little to no “screen time” is preferred for children under the age of two. Boredom comes in a period of thoughts where none of my interests are being consciously struck. It’s a selfish concept so to speak. Ideally, as individuals we would never be bored if we found happiness in all things. Everyone has their own interests and their own tastes. Thats a simple phrase that most everyone knows, but in the grand scheme of things it means a lot. This freedom of self-concept is the window for boredom to arise.
Today, many people don’t recognize the feeling boredom. People are entertained by their devices and games. Many people try to avoid boredom. But is boredom really that awful? No, boredom is actually an amazing natural spirit that improve our creativity, health, and alert.
Smartphones prohibit children from socially interacting. Children who use their parent’s smartphones for playing games miss out on opportunities to interact with others. Children can become addicted to the games, this can cause problems later in life when they need social skills.
