Screening is the first step in addressing any concerns in a child’s development. Healthcare providers and parents should continue surveillance and screening through childhood; screening tools should be used whenever concerns arises about a child’s developmental (Lee, Lu, Allan, Yeh, & Chang, 2015). American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has suggested evidence-based screening tools improve early detection, causing the use of screening tools to increase (Sheldrick et al., 2016). According to a survey by AAP, there have not been improvements in developmental screening in primary care setting; pediatricians are not using effective screening methods for their patients (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2006). Thomas, Spragins, Mazloum, Cronkhite, & Maru (2016) conducted a study that suggested that health care professionals (1) override evidence-based screening results with their informal judgment; and/or (2) assistance is needed with making referrals and understanding tests. Based on literature, screening policies need to be mandated and standard for each child, for the …show more content…
Parents’ role is critical for professionals because their observations and reports are considered at checkups. Parental report of skills has shown to be helpful in predicting developmental problems, despite barriers that exist (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2001). Barriers can be overcome through education to parents about how to use instruments that can help with evaluation of children (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2001 & Mackrides & Ryherd, 2011). Winter, Morawska, & Sanders (2012) conducted a study where parents were assessed for knowledge of child development and milestones; results indicated that increasing knowledge about child development processes and milestones is important. Involving parents in their child’s development process can lead to earlier recognition of any developmental milestones being
The professional text that someone in my field would use is the ASQ-3. The ASQ-3 Ages & Stages Questionnaires is designed to screen children’s developmental performance that must be completed by the parents. It is a series of 21 questions with questions ranging in the areas from communication, gross motor, fine motor, problem solving, and personal-social skills specifically for 36 month to 38 month old toddlers. For the communication section, an example of a question asks is “When you ask your child to point to her ears, feet, hair, eyes, and nose, does she correctly point to at least seven body parts?”. In the gross motor section, a question ask “Does your child jump with both feet leaving the floor at the same time?”. A fine motor question that was asked was, “When drawing, does your child hold a pencil between her thumb and fingers like an adult does?”. The parent filling the questionnaire would bubble either yes, sometimes or not yet. There are 6 questions in each are

Kidwatching shows many different things when it comes to collecting data on how a student or student’s learn over a period of time. When doing kidwatching observations, it is important to monitor everything that could have an influence on a student’s performance. Different things such as resources, environments, interactions, etc. are a few things that can affect a student when it comes to learning. Being able to kidwatch at Killian Elementary, I’ve been able to collect a great deal of data when it comes to seeing a student as a scientist. This opportunity has allowed me to look at teaching science many different ways that can show how much students are interested and how much he/she understands.
An assessment that I always use is Ages & Stages Questionnaires (ASQ). Each child receives this assessment. Working in the W. Children’s Learning and Development Center for the past thirteen years allowed me to use them numerous times and have a complete understanding of each child’s developmental based on the information provided when the assessment is resumed. Starting working there with the three years old for two years, I remember vaguely when we applied the Ages & Stages to them. I am not aware of the questions being asked for that age group anymore. Working for the infants and toddlers for eleven years now, allow me to be knowledgeable about where is supposed to be. I usually use the questionnaire when they are 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14
The idea of adoption has been around far longer than the formal legal system of adoption in place today. In the bible, there is a passage detailing the adoption of Ester by her cousin, Mordecai, after the death of her parents. Ancient Greeks, Egyptians, Romans, and Babylonians all had their own systems of adoption. Adoption systems differ from country to country. United States citizens who internationally adopt today allow for the blending of cultures, languages, traditions, and ideals. In contrast, the practice of adult adoption in Japan is a particularly interesting system used quite differently and reflects a lot of traditional Japanese culture itself.
Students will develop at their own pace, some much slower than others; a teacher may see this as a developmental delay. This mislabeling of an infant or toddler can cause a significant amount of stress on a parent who in their eyes sees their child developing typically. Another problem with Early Intervention Programs is a lack of parent involvement and acceptance. Parents not wanting to accept that their infant or toddler has a developmental delay or disability and then deny services or not follow through with the Individualized Family Service Plan provided to them. This happens because of a lack of knowledge on the parents end. “In a large measure the success of early intervention and family involvement is dependent upon our ability to assist families in maintaining their handicapped young children within the home—with the provision that both the children and family members can lead reasonably happy, productive lives.” (Bricker & Casuso
According to the Children Defense Fund 1 in 13 children will live in extreme poverty in the United States and a family of four is extremely poor if their income is below 10,000 or half of the official poverty line. It can contribute to behavioral problems, social and emotional problems, and poor health. Living in poverty affects how a chil...

Since the beginning of time, fathers have had a profound effect on their child’s development. Over the years, the norm for traditional family dynamics of having a father figure in the household has changed drastically, and so did the roles of the parents. It is not as common as it used to be to have a father or father figure in the home. In this day and age, women are more likely to raise children on their own and gain independence without the male assistance due to various reasons. The most significant learning experience and development of a person’s life takes place in their earlier years when they were children. There are many advantages when there is a mother and father combined in a
Child neglect is the most common form of maltreatment towards children, which may lead to various short- and long-term physical, psychological and social consequences. It is known to coincide with other forms of abuse and difficulties. Infants and toddlers are often the main victims of neglect.
I did my parent-child observation at a restaurant in Batesville Indiana. I went to a small family owned place called Wagner’s. I did my observation over Thanksgiving break after my family cut our Christmas tree down. This occurred on Saturday November 28th around 6pm. This is a place that I am relatively familiar with. I have been going there with my family every year since I was a young child. It is a pretty small restaurant. While one side has a bar, the other side is more family oriented. It is a child friendly place that has a small area that toddlers and young kids can play. It has coloring books and small toys.
Parents and their parenting style play an important role in the development of their child. In fact, many child experts suggest that parenting style can affect a child’s social, cognitive, and psychological development which influence not just their childhood years, but it will also extend throughout their adult life. This is because a child’s development takes place through a number of stimuli, interaction, and exchanges that surround him or her. And since parents are generally a fixed presence in a child’s life, they will likely have a significant part on the child’s positive or negative development (Gur 25).
Child psychology, also known as child development, is the study of psychological growth of children; how these mechanisms develop from infancy to adolescence and why they deviate from one child to the next. Child development is associated with biological, psychological, and emotional diversity that occur in humans. Although there is a different advancement for each child, these developmental changes may be greatly determined by genetic factors and experience during prenatal life. The early years of a child’s life are very important for his or her health and development. Parents, health professionals, educators, and others can work together as partners to help children grow up to reach their full potential.
