People in other cultures and countries look at Americans as extremely privileged. Many will touch on negative stereotypes such as obesity and geographic lack of knowledge or information, while others view the country as being abundantly wealthy. Most people from other countries tend to think about the States as being the land of the “American Dream”. Some modern popular culture transmitted via mass media influences many like BET, SOAP, TMC and also including reality television such as “keeping up with the Kardashians”, “Love and Hip Pop” and, soap operas when they think of America. Generational poverty generally occurs in families where at least two generations have been born into poverty. Families living in this type of poverty are not equipped with the everyday tools to overcome their situations. Generational poverty also connects with relative poverty, which refers to the economic status of a family whose income is insufficient to meet its society 's average standard of living. This has strong ties to urban poverty that occurs in metropolitan areas with populations of at least 50,000 people. The urban poor deal with a complex aggregate of chronic and acute stressors (including crowding, violence, and noise) and are dependent on often-inadequate large-city services. Finally yet importantly, one of the most dreadful poverty situations is rural poverty and this occurs in nonmetropolitan areas with populations below 50,000. In rural areas, there are more single-guardian households, and families often have less access to services, support for disabilities, and quality education opportunities. Children in poverty are less likely to not go to pre-k, lack supplies needed for school, and often-unstable housing. Lindsey states in his piece that nineteen percent of children lived in poverty in 2013, these numbers are still increasing and affecting children daily. There are 1.2 million homeless students in public school. Student homelessness is continue to rise. These children are more likely not to get a good night sleep, a full meal, receive lower test scores, lower grades and are more likely to drop out of school completely. So, what does the poverty exactly mean to children? When one thinks of poverty often the mental picture that comes to mind is of single parent welfare, dependent, women and unemployed, drug-addicted, alcoholic lackadaisical men. The children are often forgotten. The impact of poverty, the destruction of crime and stigmatization of the violence on the children is more devastating and irreversible than the miseducation and illiteracy that most often companies poverty. The implication is not the poverty can not be overcome but that the cycles of teenage pregnancy, welfare dependency, and dropping out of high school continues and are hard to break. Arnold, a scholar and studier on the subject, said in an article, "Child poverty has reached epidemic proportions within the United States. Of the 35.6 million people living in poverty in 1997, 14.1 million were children … One third of American children spend at least one year below the poverty line, and 18% experience extreme poverty … Younger children are more likely to face poverty… and its impact may be strongest during children's earliest years ... Child poverty is a very real problem in America and most children with money problems are likely to fall behind in school. The United States is divided into three different classes when classifying a group by their income. The classes are the High class, the middle class, and the low class.
