Children at a young age take things to heart. The way you act towards them and or around them effect the child more than you think. Abuse and neglect have the biggest impact on the child’s life and will most likely stick with them until adulthood. Sometimes when the child grows up he reflects in life and strives to be better at life. In most cases the abuse or neglect sticks with him or her and makes the person think that being that way is ok and it causes them to do something that they will regret. Child maltreatment is a terrible thing to happen to children. It causes over half a million children to be injured, and about 1500 children die annually. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services states that “In addition to this appalling immediate toll, child abuse is thought to have many harmful long-term consequences.” (NBER 2018). For example, if the parent or guardian ignores the child for hours or even days on end then that’s a form of neglect. Neglect can mentally cause the child pain and it could lead to the child physically hurting others or themselves. Children who experience neglect are at increased risk for smoking, alcoholism, drug abuse as adults. (CDC 2016). Neglect could also lead to anxiety, which anxiety could lead to the person having metal problems, which then could lead to that person committing an act that he or she will regret later down life. Without the proper support from the parent or guardian the child will make mistakes down the road. First starting from stealing some candy, to smoking a “joint”, to even teen pregnancy. This could all happen just because the parent neglected the child and did not lead him or her through life. Thus, leading us back to the main topic.
