Moving onto the two less common forms of child neglect: medical and educational. These two forms of neglect are pretty self explanatory, but can be expanded on. From basics, its obvious that children need to have proper health care, and a proper school experience. Without these basic needs, children can become extremely ill, or not grow up into a good lifestyle. This can also lead to a child not developing into the happy healthy life it should have.
Starting with the educational side, there are three basic factors that can define education neglect. These being: permitted, chronic truancy; failure to enroll or other truancy; inattention to special education needs (Coleman). Not only do the parents have to meet certain standards, but also the
school. Furthermore, if a child is not at school 5 days in each month, and the parent has been contacted but does not intervene, then the Childs education has been very neglected. Also, failing to homeschool, or enroll the child into school can fall into these categories. Finally, refusing to enroll a child or obtain school services or other special educational needs is a form of neglect. Medical neglect is a lot like educational neglect, just a little more serious. Childs health is a serious factor because at their young age, they are still building their immune system. Some examples of medical neglect are: denying child's access to medical care in an emergency; ignoring medical requests from a doctor; refusing to pay for the child’s medicine needs without a proper reason (LaMance). Child services can intervene into a childs care if the situation gets too bad. There are also some legal consequences that can take place due to medical neglect. Neglect can turn into a very serious situation, and no child deserves to go through it. References Coleman, Rachel. responsiblehomeschooling.org. 11 Feb 2018 LaMance, Ken. legalmatch.com. 11 Feb 2018
Child abuse can be Physical, Sexual, Emotional, and Physiological Abuse. Child abuse is not only just about abuse but neglect as well. The difference between abuse and neglect is, that abuse is the maltreatment of someone and neglect is failure to give the proper care to a person (Jilani, 2010). Neglect has different types as well, such as Educational, Emotional, and Physical Neglect. Every place in the world has some types of statistics on Child Abuse and Neglect. For example, “The United States has one of the worst records among industrialized nations – losing on average between four and seven children every day to child abuse and neglect (Childhelp, n.d.).” The fact that so many young lives are lost before they even get to begin is
Neglect is difficult to define in terms of a set of behaviors that are synonymous with neglect because what is considered neglect varies based on the age and developmental level of the child. For the purpose of this paper neglect will be defined as the denial of proper physical, educational, emotional and moral attention and care (DiPanfilis, D., 2006). In 2008 Child Protective Services received 3.3 million reports of child maltreatment and seventy-one percent of them we...
Neglect is defined as failing to give proper attention to or take proper care of a person or child (Webster Dictionary, 849). According to the Institute of Medicine Staff, traditional estimate indicate that family violence affects as many as one in four children and adults in the United States during their lifetimes. Neglect occurs when the childs basic needs are not met (Black). According to Black, child neglect is prevalent and has pervasive long-term effects. In my experience working in a mandated Aboriginal child protection agency, there were many instances of child neglect that were associated with poverty. As reported by Swift (2011), Aboriginal children disproportionately make up the child welfare system in proportion to their percentage of population. Accordingly, most of the cases that I saw were child neglect cases and directly related to poverty. There are many systemic factors that contributed to oppression and poverty in the community I worked, including the lasting impacts of residential school. Moreover, housing on reserve was limited and overcrowded and to move off reserve was expensive, in addition to the impact of being further away from one’s community and support system. Child
The actual definition of child neglect is difficult to verify because it depends on the situation. Child neglect to me is the rejection or absence of a parent figure to a child. “According to the United States Department of Heath Service...
Physical neglect is the most common form of child maltreatment, and often the parents don’t even realize that they are neglecting their child. In conclusion, Child abuse and neglect is more common in children’s lives today. A child may be harmed and be right in front of us and we do not even know it. We have to watch out for the signs and symptoms to try and help a child out. We may not even realize it till it is too late. The effect can appear in all aspects of life, rather it being psychological or behavioral. These effects can range from anything such as minor physical injury, not getting along with others, or become aggressive and affect them later on in life.
Child abuse in America is an ongoing problem and something needs to be done. There are approximately one million children abused annually in the United States. (Table 339) Cases of child abuse and neglect are reported every ten seconds, and researchers believe that there’s three times that amount that goes unnoticed. (Child Abuse: Know the Signs and Stop the Violence Against Children.) Something needs to be done for these children who are too weak and too powerless to help themselves.

In Dent County alone, during the year of 2012, four children were physically abused, six were the objects of neglect, one was emotionally abused, and eleven more children were the victims of sexual abuse according to records kept by the Missouri Department of Social Services (“Child’s Division” 38). In that same year, 92,593 children were reported as being abused in the entire state of Missouri (“Child’s Division” 1). Fortunately, only 6,322 children were found to have been abused out of all of the children reported. However, an additional 7,092 were classified as ‘Unsubstantiated-Preventive Services Indicated.’ This means that not enough evidence existed to move further with prosecution, but still enough to indicate that abuse was imminent. Another 44,070 of the reports warranted an assessment of the child’s family in order to ensure the safety of the child (“Child’s Division” 5).
More than 2.5 million cases of child abuse and neglect are reported each year in the United States (Child Abuse and Neglect Statistics). Almost five children die as a result of abuse and more than three out of four are under four years old (Child Abuse: Statistics & Facts). Child abuse is very common amongst families (Child Abuse and Neglect Statistics). One-third of these involve physical abuse and one half involves neglect. Studies show that one in four girls and one in eight to nine boys will be sexually abused before they are 18 years old (Child Abuse: Statistics & Facts).
