Child Development Theorists Child development theories focus on explaining how children change and grow throughout childhood. These Theories focus on various aspects of child development including social, emotional and cognitive growth. We all have our own development experiences that may be different than others. Some well known child development theories are Freud's Psychosexual Developmental Theory, Erikson's Psychosocial Developmental Theory, and Piaget's Cognitive Developmental Theory. With his clinical work with patients that have a mental illness, Freud believes that childhood experiences are influenced by behavior. He believes that the energy of the libido is focused on different erogenous zones at different stages. Erikson’s Psychosocial Developmental Theory was an influential theory during half of the twentieth century. His eight stage theory describes growth and change throughout life. Different social interactions and conflicts occur during each stage. Erikson’s theory differs from other developmental theories because his theory occurs through the whole lifespan. The Piaget’s Cognitive Developmental Theory focuses on the development of a person’s thought process. This developmental theory has four stages: The Sensorimotor Stage. The Preoperational Stage, The Concrete Operational Stage, and The Formal Operational Stage. The Sensorimotor Stage is a period of time from birth to two years old. This is when an infant's knowledge of the world is limited to their sensory perceptions and motor skills. The Preoperational Stage is when children are from two to six. This is when a child learns language. They do not understand concrete logic and do not know how to take point of view of other people. The Concrete Operational Stage is when children are from age seven to eleven. During this stage, children gain a better understanding of mental operations. They begin thinking logically but still have difficulty understanding abstract and hypothetical concepts. During The Formal Operational Stage children are from age twelve to adulthood. This is when they develop the ability to think about abstract concepts. Other skills such as logical thought, deductive reasoning, and systematic planning emerge. Some psychology's best known theorists have developed theories to help explore and explain different aspects of child development. These theories represent a few different aspects of child development.
The student I chose for this case study is a young boy, who I will call Jessie. He was observed in a classroom at an Early Childhood Learning Center. Jessie is a 3.6-year-old boy. He is the only child on his maternal side. Jessie has black curly hair, brown eyes and he seems to be the average height for his age range. Development is how a person changes throughout their life, from the time they are conceived to the time they die. Everyone processes and interprets things and information differently. After researching these various developmental theories ecological theories best describe development. Urie Bronfenbrenner is the researcher that created the ecological theory. Psychoanalytic theories least describe development. Both Ecological and Psychoanalytic theories have certain aspects that I personally believe to make a valid point and certain aspects that do not make a valid point when it comes to development. These theories focus on the unconscious and the importance of childhood experiences. Psychodynamic theories are descended from Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis, which is his ideology of personality and the associated treatment techniques. Psychoanalysis attributes thoughts and actions to unconscious motives and conflicts. This theory also includes the techniques used in treating psychological disorders by seeking to expose and interpret unconscious tensions. He proposed that childhood sexuality and unconscious motivations influence personality. Freud’s historically significant psychoanalytic theory became part of the human cultural legacy.
For Freud, psychosexual theory occurred when personality arises, as it tries to resolve conflicts between unconscious sexual and aggressive impulses and the societal demands to suppress these impulses. As I personally take the time to have a reflection over the course of “Child and Adolescent Development” I find myself intrigued with the amount of knowledge I gained during this course this semester. I wanted to take the time to concentrate on three specific areas in which I felt I had the most growth, but also came as a challenge to me as well. It is important when reflecting over a course that I look at what I found to be challenging, as this was an opportunity of growth for me individually.
