Parents should know what is best for their children as they grow up, and should know what is right or wrong for young children to do. Competing in child beauty pageants can affect a child’s development because it takes away children, childhood by forcing them to act and look like adults. Child beauty pageants started in 1921, it allows children under 16 year of age to express themselves such as dressing up and dancing. Parent still seems to force, and not knowing the affects on the child. Parents should know that by letting their children join beauty pageants can exploit and also sexualize young girls. It dedicate that parents is the one that open up makeup to their children; otherwise, they will never know anything about makeup until they are a teenager. It’s very inappropriate for young children to be wearing revealing clothes and use their physical appearance for entertainment. “To paint makeup on their faces and do up their hair. ‘These are children for heaven’s sake, not adults’. Let them decide for themselves at an appropriate age if they want to pursue this they are adults” (Wallace). No other children’s should go through this and they should enjoy as much as they want, such as exploring what they like. Child beauty pageants are competition that based off beauty, some children enjoy being in the contest while some are feelings too much pressure due to their parents. Also, child beauty pageants can cause serious effects such as weight loss, and eating disorder due to body image. In fact, children tend to starve themselves because they are afraid not being able to fit in clothing. Young girls should not be allowed to participate in beauty pageants because it takes away their innocence. “But playing dress-up on the pageant stage costs parents financially, and some experts argue that it can be harmful to girls, teaching them that their self-worth is measured by how pretty they are” (Schultz). It will affect them greatly as they get older, they will think that in order to be pretty, they need to put on make-up, curl their hair and spray tans. Especially, they will try to make themselves look older as possible because according to child beauty pageants, the parents want the children to look older, the older the sexier to them.
