Does a dream childhood include throwing on tons of makeup, wearing provocative clothing and being judged frequently based on your look and personality? Well for some parents that’s the goal of all goals and dreams. To exploit their young daughters by putting them in beauty pageants. Beauty pageants have a negative impacts on female adolescents. Most of these girls have eating disorders and go to the extreme to lose weight.
According to the article “Child beauty Pageants should be eliminated.” Beauty pageants increase the percent of eating disorders in girls who participate in these pageants which is not healthy for these girls especially at such a young age. Judging girls on how they carry and present themselves and holding them to a higher standard on what they should look like is a horrible way to critique a young undeveloped child. “Not everyone takes criticism well especially when it comes to their appearance”. (Cartwright) . This quote is important because it shows that judging people off of their appearance is wrong and it could really lower a young girl's self esteem. Pageants send a message that looks and appearance are more important than brains and education. In beauty pageants they don’t have a ‘solve a math equation’ category or a ‘write a 300 word essay on how you could help the environment’ category. “Why are we teaching our girls how to apply fake lashes and not teach them how to do algebraic equations?” (Cartwright) This quote is very significant because it talks about how girls who participate in beauty pageants are learning the wrong things. They’re learning to put on corsets and how to diet when they should be learning things that will equipt them to go out in the real world.These children may struggle with ideas of perfection, eating disorders, and body image in their
