In the movie daddy 's little girl, it shows three young girls that are taken away from their father. They moved with their mother which sells drugs with her boyfriend. In the movie not only did I see them assaulting their employees are, but there was child abuse as well. The little girl was crying because she wanted to live with her father, so the boyfriend didn 't like that and then proceeded to hit the child until she stopped crying. The mother and not caring that her boyfriend was hitting her children she actually encouraged it because of the crying. She thought it was a sign of them showing weakness so she wanted to make them stronger by abusing them. They also made the children watch while they beat their employees so they know how to act. In the movie it shows many different types of victimization, but the main one that stuck out to me was child abuse. There are different types of child abuse which include neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, and emotional abuse. "Child abuse is most commonly perpetrated by someone known to the child. He or she can be a caregiver, relative, family friend or any adult in a position of authority over the child." In the movie it showed emotional abuse, physical abuse, and a little bit of neglect. The term child abuse was once as rarely heard as that of pink elephants. However rare the term has once been, it is now a term used consistently throughout the news and various other publications today. Along with the progressing decline in society's morals, has come the rapid increase of crime. One such crime is child abuse. Although child abuse is common, the act is defiling. As a result of the abuse, children who fall victim to this often need psychological treatment and counseling. Often, the child is never the same as he or she once was before. The dictionary defines child abuse as: "the physical, or emotional, or sexual mistreatment of children" (Dictionary.com). Everyday thousands of children are the victims of this abuse. The abusers range from parents, friends, total strangers, to even day-care workers.
The movie Safe Haven is about a woman named Erin who is runs away from her abusive husband. He is a police officer with an anger problem. Throughout the movie Erin has flashbacks where we learn of her husband’s abuse—how he would yell, hit, and even choke her. One night after she had enough, she fled to her neighbor’s house. Her neighbor helped her to cut and dye her hair, change her clothes, and flee to the bus station. Erin bought a bus ticket and ended up in North Carolina. There she changed her name to Katie and started a new life for herself.
Dave Pelzer’s book “A Child Called ‘It’” told his story of growing up in an abusive household. Pelzer’s family at first was just like any other, his parents loved each other and their children and they would do many fun activities together. As time progressed a change happened and his mother began to always punish Pelzer rather than any of the other children. The small punishments soon began to grow and become more and more serious. Soon, Dave’s father and siblings could not help him out of fear that their mother and wife would turn on them. Dave was banished to the garage where he would have to sit at the bottom of the stairs waiting until his mother called him to do his chores. A Child Called It depicts David Pelzer’s life and his incredible will of survival from an “It” to a man. David was emotionally and physically abused up until the age of 12, by his mother (Catherine) who was not only an alcoholic but a master of defamation. The cruelty David endured at the hands of his mother led him to believe he was nothing more than a worthless misfortune; he began to despise himself even more and started to believe that he was the cause of the abuse he suffered.
While reading the semi-autobiographical, Bastard Out of Carolina, by Dorothy Allison, I was stunned by the explicit nature of the novel. We were introduced to a young narrator and protagonist named, Ruth Anne “Bone” Boatwright. Bone's family, like that of the author, experienced a impoverished life, all the while she tried to find her place in a society that had literally labeled her “illegitimate.” Merriam-Webster defines illegitimate as being: (1) not recognized as lawful offspring; specifically: born of parents not married to each other (2) not rightly deduced or inferred- illogical (3) departing for the regular- erratic (4) not sanctioned by law- illegal (5) not authorized by good usage. As a young girl, how would it feel being known as illogical, erratic, illegal, not for good usage, and, in Bone's case, being constantly reminded of not knowing the identity of your birth father? According to helpguide.org, a non-profit online resource for mental health, the article “Child Abuse & Neglect” addressed how constantly being told you are stupid or no good, as a child, is very difficult to overcome. You may accept these negative thoughts and believe them to be reality. In this research paper, I am looking to unveil the truth of child abuse by focusing on the history, myths, and victim rehabilitation of child abuse.
The life of David Pelzer began with horrifying odds; however, he managed to pull himself from the ashes of poverty to become the admired man he is today. He endured overwhelming amounts of psychological and physical abuse during his youth. He suffered brutal indignities endorsed by his mother and during his early years he was tortured in an inhumane and degrading environment. During the latter years of his youth, he was placed in the foster care system and he went on to service the military. According to The World Book Encyclopedia, child abuse is “a term that generally refers to mistreatment of a child by a parent of another adult” (Zigler). It could also be “limited to life-threatening physical violence, including severe beating, burns, and strangulation” (Zigler). The horrific McMartin Preschool Trial was crazy and disgusting, leaving children scarred, parents angry, and the accused wronged.

In American society today we fail to address several issues that need to be addressed. The International Child Abuse Network (ICAN) uses four basis categories to docunment the child abuse cases. They are: emotional abuse, neglect, physical abuse, and sexual abuse. Imagine being a child and having your own father or mother hitting or burning your body, making sexual advances towards you, or just never being there for you when you need them. Becca, who decided to keep her last name anonymous, told about her experiences with being abused as a child in the Admit to Child Abuse web page. She told of her story by saying that she was "the victim of child sexual abuse and was abused for approximately 7 years by my father. Even at my age (22) now it is hard to put what happened to me into words" (Admit to Child Abuse). Well, more abuse like Becca's happens to children in today's society and they are victims of just those things. Not only are children being physically abused but they are also being sexual abused, emotionally abused and neglected by people that are suppose to be the closest to them. There are many signs and effects of abuse, depending on the child that is being abused. Throughout this paper, each form of abuse will be addressed and those forms will be analyzed to find a proper treatment for these problems.
