In accordance to abiding by child and youth care principles, the child and youth care worker must constantly keep their emotions in check, especially if sensitive topics come up or if the child’s experiences relate to one of their own. The emotional intensity felt in a live-in family situation feels a lot more ‘close to home’, especially the more involved the care worker is with the family. CYCs in this sector may be in interpersonal conflict with adults in the setting more than any other milieu, because they are living in or working within close contact to the home (Dimitoff, 2000). If the parents feel helpless, hopeless or angry, these emotions can surface and be directed at the care worker. The parents may try to attack the care worker, and the care worker must maintain professional etiquette and emotional regulation even if their instinct is to react (Dimitoff, 2000). The child and youth care worker must be comfortable with emotion – their own, the child’s as well as the child’s family.
The first topic that came up in the interview relates to idea of attachment theory. Attachment theory explains the human’s way of relating to a caregiver and receives an attachment figures relating to the parent, and children. In addition, the concept explains the confidence and ability for a child to free explore their environment with a place to seek support, protection, and comfort in times of distress (Levy, Ellison, Scott, and Bernecker, 2010, p. 193). Within attachment theory explains different types of attachment styles that children experience during early childhood. These attachment styles affect the relationships they continue to build in adulthood. The best attachment style happens when the parent is attuned to the child during his or her early childhood called secure attachment (Reyes, 2010, p. 174). In order for complete secure attachment, the child needs to feel safe, seen, and soothed. Any relationship that deviates from this model represents the anxious or insecure attachment. The job of a child welfare worker appears to be a demanding profession that promotes the child’s safety, but also strengthens the family organization around them in order to successfully raise the children. This child welfare workers work in the system known as the Child Protective Services whose initiative is to protect the overall welfare of the child. The short novel From the Eye of the Storm: the Experiences of a Child Welfare Worker by Cynthia Crosson-Tower demonstrates the skills necessary to deal with the practice of social work along with both its challenges and its happy moments. The novel consists of some of the cases involving Tower’s actual career in social work. In reading the book, I was able to experience some of the actual cases in which children dealt with physical and mental abuse from their families that caused them to end up within the system. Also, some of these children had issues in adapting to foster and adoptive families based on the issues they faced earlier in life. As we have learned earlier in the course, the violence that a child experiences early in life has an overall affect on the person they become as they grow into adulthood. When children deal with adverse childhood experiences, they are at a higher risk for abusing drugs and/or alcohol, increased likelihood of abusing their own child or spouse, higher rates of violent and nonviolent criminal behavior, along with several other issues throughout their lifespan.

What is the different between child abuse and child neglect? Base on my opinion child abuse is basically when a child is being hit for no reason, verbally abuse and mistreat in a cruelly way. Child neglect on the other hand is when the parent/s or guidance abundant the child and do not provide for them.
