Tulip mania Research Essay Tulip mania is an event in Dutch history, the 17th century, when tulips were worth way more than they should have been. One account even stated that a house was bought for around a dozen tulips. The people of the Netherlands were known for their large amounts of tulip farms, this was just the beginning of the love and obsession of “broken” tulips. This event has made the people of the Netherlands a lot more cautious about getting involved with risky stock market decisions. Not only is this an interesting and funny event to think about, but it also caused a lot of hopelessness and debt among Dutch people that lasted long after the burst of the economic bubble.
The Netherlands is sometimes known as the flower shop of the world because of their many tulip farms along with many other flower farms. One beautiful display of The Netherlands love of tulips is the Keukenhof garden in Stationsweg . The increase in price of tulips started because of a bandwagon affect, the speculators would sell these unique tulips for quite a bit of money to appeal to the rich and once they started buying the beautiful flowers, others wanted to join and buy them too, to “fit in” and seem like they were rich too. With the increase in buyers the speculators increased the prices of the tulips and the bulbs, like supply and demand. The Dutch people were so obsessed with having the most beautiful flowers that they would even say they would pay off the debt later and “put up their houses for collateral” (Rijksmuseum).
