Health is defined as the state of being free from illness or injury. However, health focuses on more than just the physical being. Health has six important components, such as the following: environmental, social, physical, emotional, spiritual, and mental. With this being said, to attain health in its totality, it is important one maintain a balance in all aspects of health. However, going through daily life experiences can affect us human beings in all ways or more in one way than the other. In Health 4073 we have discussed all components of health as I mentioned above. One particular component that stands out to me personally is environmental. The environmental component of health refers to a person’s surroundings, the kind of area he or The manuscript entails a young African American boy, named Joey, who endures external struggles of change due to his environment, and as a result, acts accordingly to the new circumstances. While Joey endured many negative transitions (for him perceptively), such as, being bullied and disliked by one of his teachers, one particular one that I relate to stood out most. This new change for Joey is his mother divorcing her father for one, and two, bringing another man in the home, who is now considered to be his stepfather. Due to being out of his comfort zone Joey creates trouble for himself. He starts to fail academically and acts as any child may act when he or she realizes his or her parents are separated and there is no room for redemption of the relationship. I am convinced that Joey’s environment plays a major role in the cause and effect of his rebellious behavior because when one is accustomed to a certain environment he or she does not know how to react to a new one. I correspond to Joey’s way of coping in this situation because I am a firm believer of allowing people to deal with encounters how he or she feels necessary to. Also, I can personally relate to this story because I have stepparents on both sides of my mother and father. In regards to my situation I grew up bitter because it was my stepfather giving me chores around the house and disciplining rather than my biological father, so I can relate. This particular story relates to planning because in life we plan for certain things, sometimes things we have no control over. When Joey’s mother got remarried, I am sure she did not expect that to happen. Therefore, she could not plan to fall in love with another man after divorcing her husband. However, ensuring this other man was worthy to be introduced and be around her son I am sure takes thorough planning and thought.
Parental influences can negatively impact a child’s life. An example of this is in the novel
It begins with Joey, his wife Peggy, and her son from her previous marriage, Richard. They are driving for a long time, as they are coming to Pennsylvania from New York City. As the family goes about their normal conversations, Joey has a chance to reminisce on his failed previous marriage. Joey is described as a somewhat precarious man whom is completely controlled by his mother. The purpose of the visit is to introduce Mrs. Robinson to Joey’s new wife, Peggy, as she has hated Joey’s two previous wives. Mrs. Robinson has even caused both of these relationships to end in divorce. Also, Mrs. Robinson forced her husband and Joey to move to the Pennsylvania farm in the first place, because she held it near and dear to her heart. Unfortunately, Mrs. Robinson and Peggy fight constantly and are quite mean to each other. Mrs. Robinson does not approve, and it appears as if history is about to repeat itself. (Detweiler
Environment refers to the internal and external context or setting of a person’s social experience (Arnold & Boggs, 2001; Kozier et al., 2014). This consists of physical, psychological, social, cultural, historical, political and economic dimensions; thus, person and environment are fundamentally intertwined (Arnold & Boggs, 2011; Schim et al., 2007; Thorne et al., 1998). The notion of environment is multilayered and constructed, therefore, constantly changing, distinctly serving to shape a person’s health (Thorne et al., 1998). The concept of environment is foundational to the, “Social Determinants of Health: The Canadian Facts,” and in practice, helps the nurse describe, explain, and predict health outcomes and their context (Kozier et al., 2014; Mikkonen &Raphael, 2010).
As defined by World Health Organization health is a "State of complete physical, mental, and social well being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” So much is made about whether health care should be a necessity and the costs and benefits of creating a national health care system. The debate can be centered upon ethical issues as well as economical feasibility. I believe health is the balance between your physical, mental and social well-being, in my opinion all three factors are essential for good health. I am a twenty year old Asian woman. In relation to health for myself, I consider it to mean being able to function sufficiently as a human being without significant pain, disease and psychological problems. It also means
The boy appears to play the role of the responsible adult more so than the father does. The boy has typical signs of a child from today’s broken family relationships; he does not want to disappoint either parent. The boy s...
In this essay I am going to investigate whether health is easily defined as the absence of disease or physical injury. According to Health psychology (2009) ‘World Health Organisation defined health as a complete state of physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity’. In order to achieve good physical a nutrition diet is needed, healthy BMI, rest and adequate physical exercise is needed.
‘Health is a state of physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity’ (World Health Organisation, 2011) This definition was first cited by the International health conference in July 1946, and the definition has remained the same. Health is a way of life which is reflected upon every individual, factors such as the condition of your body, has an impact on your health overall. Additionally, if an individual being is fit and in good shape, they are more likely to make healthy choices. Presently, in society around 10 million adults in Britain smoke, (BBC News 2007).Take the example of cigarettes, much of the known effects of smoking include heart disease, lung cancer, heart attacks and much more. Yet adults around the world are constantly engaging in this habit which ultimately deteriorates the health of a being.
This also requires the person to be socially and economically productive in order to be seen as healthy. According to Mildred Blaxter (1990), there are different ways of defining health. Furthermore, disease can be seen as the presence of an abnormality in part of the body or where there is a harmful physical change in the body such as broken bones. So, illness is the physical state of disease, that is to say, the symptoms that a person feels because of the disease. However, there is some limitation of these definitions which is not merely an absence of disease but a state of physical, mental, spiritual and social wellbeing.
In addition, the concept of health can be seen from two different perspectives. First, as a tool, meaning health's value as a form of wealth that should not be taken for granted. Second, health as a product or goal, that people strive to reach and maintain.
Overall, Joey was a very well written character, who had many traits not mentioned above. He is a brave, loyal, and compassionate character who is driven by his love and loyalty to his friends and family. He had many smaller traits, and many other traits that shape both the character and the story to what it is. Without Joey’s, he may have given up. Without his bravery, he may not have made it. And without his compassion, he may have not kept going when he wanted to give
The World Health Organization (WHO) defined health in its broader sense in its 1948 constitution as "a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity" (Who,1946).
What does it mean to be healthy? Health is a state of complete physical , mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease, illness or infirmity. It is important to distinguish between disease and health. Disease is the prognosis of a particular disorder with a specific cause and characteristic symptoms. On the other hand, illness is the existence of disease
How health is defined differs from person to person, what is healthy and what is not is subjective. Some people say that a healthy person would live the longest or a person is only healthy if he/she is physically very strong and active. Some might even say a person is only healthy if that person is mentally strong. In my opinion, health cannot be defined in one word. Although my seventy-six year old grandfather would not be considered stereotypically healthy, he is a perfect example of what I consider healthy.
Health is described as physical and mental well-being and freedom from disease, pain or defect. However, such descriptions only superficially define the actual meaning of health. There may be many occasions when individuals are not necessarily ill or in pain but may be overweight, stressed or emotionally unstable. Health is a quality of life involving dynamic interaction and interdependence among the individual’s physical state, their mental and emotional reactions, and the social context in which the individual exists. There are many factors that influence your health, but three major components contribute to general well-being: Self-awareness, a balanced diet and, regular physical activity.
The environment and health are very closely linked. The environment in which we inhabit and go about our daily lives, directly impacts on our physical, mental and social well-being. There are biological, chemical and physical factors that can affect human health in a physical and mental way. The World Health Organisation states that "health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity" (WHO 1948), meaning that although many factors relating to health are associated with environmental pollution, they can also be caused by the environment in which we work and live in. The relationship between the environment and health, can however be quite complex. Human health is not only as a result of air, water and ground pollution, but also things such as food, genetics, life style and quality, which directly affect human susceptibility to illness, disease and possibly death. Disruptions to the environment, such as substance dispersal, climate change, acidification, ground pollution, photochemical air pollution and over fertilisation can also impact on human health. Therefore, there are direct and indirect links to the environment and health issues.
