For chemistry I had a good start because I remembered most concepts but there was this one big thing that during the review I totally forgot how to do it which was reading a periodic table. I know that's a very bad thing to not remember since everything in chemistry revolves around the periodic table and not understand it would make everything else seem more confusing than it has to be. I needed to work on chemical reaction types, half life, and titrations because they were the hardest and confusing concepts that I learned for this unit. Concepts that I felt like I did good on were balancing equations, nuclear reactions, electronegativity, and nuclear chemistry. Balancing equations was one concept I already knew how to do because my science 9 teacher taught this so it was not that difficult for me. But when you showed us the algebraic method I was so lost and confused because I never seen that before and it looked very complicated and hard. But my goal is to understand it because it is supposed to be easier and faster than the other way we were taught. I will do this by watching videos on khan academy about the algebraic method because they explain things well and they give you practice questions with helps a lot. Nuclear reactions made sense to me because it was not too complicated and the way it works is not that difficult to understand. So when you look at a period table the more down the row an element is the more shells it has, if it is closer to the right side of the periodic table and the other element is on the left and same row than the element on the right is more electroneg, and finally the more charges an element has the more electroneg it is. This course and as in Honors Biology, we were taught in a more oneself teaching rather than a lecture. I like the idea of not having a lecture, but when the teacher took a day to do a quick overview of each chapter, I learned the material and understood the material the best. This has been a challenging course overall. However, I feel like I’ve grasped the majority, if not all, the topics we have covered. While I may not be a master on the subject matter, yet, I feel that I am at least meeting the requirements expected for the course. I’ll see if this is reflected when I take the review exam later in the week.
In COL 101 I have learned many new things about college. Since this is my first semester at college I did not really know where everything was. This class really helped me to learn new things about myself, including what resources are available to me, what my plan for the future is, and the many changes I have endured during this course.
...commend reading this next time but the standards are set by someone else. Science is a hard topic for students connect with since most of the time its either you love it or you hate it. The reading journals and discussion board post on either book helped to remember and understand each set of chapters. The division of the chapters was the difficult part since most of the longer chapters were assigned during the week instead of the weekend. The use of technology in the class was great since most students nowadays are well versed in it. Using twitter and online resources to your advantage is something I would keep. Having multiple credit opportunities also helped especially when work piled up and then in result the quality faltered.
The Periodic Table is based around the Atomic Theory. Firstly people believed that everything was made up the four elements Earth, Fire, Wind, and Water. This theory evolved into everything being made up of atoms. Breakthroughs throughout history such as the discoveries of the nucleus, protons, neutrons and electrons have pushed this theory forward to where it is today.
I have always been inspired by the workings of chemistry and mathematics. My studies of these subjects have developed my understanding and have made me pursue my interest in these two topics. I want to take up chemistry as it involves a large amount of mathematics which I value and understand to be challenging, yet very enjoyable, as there is always an alternative route to obtain the answer. Additionally, I am drawn to the course because it is a mixture of all these exacting subjects, forming a degree that is very demanding and stimulating. Chemists are constantly thinking of new ways to produce viable drugs containing different isomers to improve the pharmaceutical sector using mathematical equations. Chemistry is about innovation, applying information to new areas and how to do things better than they were before, the degree appeals to and fascinates me.
What I can do for the remainder of the course to make this a better learning experience is to continue to be involved and learn from my other classmate and instructor. The feedback is beneficial as it helps me understand others point of view.

Over the course of the semester, I feel that I have grown as a writer in many ways. When I came into the class, there were skills I had that I already excelled at. During my time in class, I have come to improve on those skills even more. Before I took this class I didn’t even realise what I was good at. This is the first class where I felt I received feedback on my writing that helped me to actually review my work in see what areas I lacked in and where I succeeded. Some of the skills I had shocked me as I didn’t think I had those capabilities in me.
From the unit of chemistry in grade ten science, the students have learned many things from different types of elements in the chart all the way to how each element impacts the daily life each student or even adult lives in. Some of the things I as a student have learned include how to draw the different elements in a bohr rutherford diagram, balancing chemical equations, types of chemical reactions, and even information about the different types of acids and bases. Although there were many other things in the unit, these four definately helped me learn about chemistry in a more in-depth way, as well as teaching me something very new since these were some things a few of the students had never done in the previous years. Learning this in the classroom has really opened my eyes to the world in which we live in today, many times I leave the house on a cold day and as I look upon the cold water becoming ice or even the snow falling down, I know how it is happening, why it is happening, and I can even picture the molecules solidifying as we had seen in class with many different diagrams.

The growing relevance of Chemical Engineering in today’s world, from energy & oil industries to pharmaceuticals & biotechnology, and a keen desire for applying this knowledge in interrelated spheres motivates me to pursue a Master’s degree in this field. My interest in science goes back to the time when I was in school. We had a young and enthusiastic teacher who took us on field trips and visits to science fairs and museums. This nascent interest has only burgeoned through my years in school and high school, as I have learnt more about the subject. In the long run, I see myself as a part of a leading research group, either as a faculty member or in the R&D department of an organisation contributing my bit to the field of Chemical Engineering. As a research scientist, I hope to make a difference in this field and learn more through the innovative challenges.
To someone that hasn’t taken this class, I would tell them that learning is a lifelong thing that you have to be proactive in. You have to be purposeful and intentional and aware of how you’re completing or learning something. As an adult, learning is not the same as it was in the second grade. You need to know how you think, and process, become aware of it, and use your strengths and weaknesses to your advantage, and learn how to improve your weaknesses to be able to become beneficial to you. Learning is something that has to be conscious.
I learned that it is possible to discuss social issues looking into History of Science and vice-versa, and it matters to me because it means that scientists may not be giving enough attention to the History of Science – I was in my 5th semester of College in Brazil and this is the first time I am really looking into History of Science. More like a continuation of my two last papers than only one paper, I made a review with what I learned previously and this last section. If someone would ask me why, I would say that is because I learned that sometimes we can solve the problems of tomorrow looking right back to the past.
