Personal Statement
When I was growing up, my uncle had built a company dedicated to sell chemical products. Every day he would teach me about his job, and the formulas he had created. Learning how he created those products, I became interested in the process of how chemistry, physics and mathematics worked together to make these day to day commodities. On top of all that, my increasing love of science led to a passion for computers, which ultimately made me major in computer science in high school, ending up in the top 3 of my class.
Before I started off college, I knew exactly what I wanted to be a chemical engineer. Inspired by my uncle and eager to understand the fundamental principles of chemistry, I set out three specific goals for me to complete during my time in the university. Don't you know that petroleum is a diminishing resource? Or things like, why not choose a different type of energy? But I knew deep down that it will be a long time for petroleum supplies to remain stable, and that there is a lot of growth and opportunity in this field. I also realized that although it is true that alternative energies are experiencing dramatic growth nowadays, the demand for petroleum and use of its derivations will always exist.
I envision a career in this field to get a chance to contribute a positive outcome to the petroleum energy industry, easing its recovery and improving its production. I’m an electrical engineer who created the first kind of computer memory without the need for mechanical parts. After that, I started my company, Wang Labs, and I became an entrepreneur in word processors and desktop calculators, both of which were very new at the time. If you didn't know, word processors were primitive computers that could only be used to write. I liked math and science, and was very proficient at them when I was in grade school and barely bothered with the other classes. I even skipped them sometimes, but I always got an A on the exams, which got me through with higher grades.
The possibility of studying a Chemistry and Chemical Biology degree at Cornell’s College of Arts and Sciences department will guide me with the best path. I have a big passion for science and technology; I have been interested in them ever since I can remember. I was intrigued by all the chemicals, formulas, elements, and the all mathematics that was involved. As for technology I always loved playing around with computer, being able to see how they work in and outside just fascinated me. Now I’m able to see that this is becoming something of the future and I hope that I can be part of something greater, something that will advance into a new era in history. This is something I love and I will make it a reality. Now that it comes time to decide what I want to be, I’m leaning more towards the technology so this will be based upon the view of a Computer Scientist.
The word relies on oil and gas for energy. Gas and oil have to be located and extracted. Petroleum engineering makes it possible; they are responsible for getting oil and gas fields running. They have a promising future as long as gas and oil are main resources for energy needs.
The various processes and concepts involved in industries responsible for the production of innumerable day to day goods have always captured my fascination. The production and processing of chemicals form the crux of such industries. Engineering has been a key interest of mine since childhood. While still in grade school I enjoyed listening to my father, an electrical engineer, teach me about advances in technology, and was always eager to hear more. I was introduced to my first computer at the age of five, and have loved interacting with them ever since. My decision to study engineering as a career was no surprise to those who knew me.
Ever since I began studying science and mathematics at all levels of educations I have always had an interest in the production of useful materials. In the growing turmoil of today; a world full of global warming and diminishing resources, questions often arise in my mind such as, "can we make a more efficient, more durable and a renewable resource that will overshadow fossil fuels? and have less of an impact on our environment?" Up to now, I have not found a solution to these questions and answering these questions is a personal aspiration of mine which I aim to fulfil by achieving a degree in Chemical engineering and eventually I will contribute to the field in my own unique way. The debate surrounding sustainable energy fascinates me, having recently learned from personal research I have understood what an authoritative role chemists and chemical engineers play in the industry at the present time and how, by working as a team, they contribute to an improved future for the whole world. However, one of the main reasons that has single-mindedly driven me this far to want to study chemical engineering is a book I have read, “Beyond the Molecular Frontier: Challenges for Chemistry and Chemical Engineering” While reading this book, I had solidified my understandings of what chemical engineering is all about. Also, one of the main processes mentioned was polymerisation and is something I already study in A-level chemistry, it is something that not only interests me, but is a personal career aspiration of mine. Reading this book gave me a determination to be the person who helps improve the future of the industry and provide an answer to the questions I always ask myself by studying this degree.
Then my interest in computing ultimately has not been restricted to the classroom and college life. It was when I visited my friend’s software company that builds essential components of a smartphone application for the government. Rightly so, just watching my friend working has given me a totally new perspective on how certain things function, and even how business operates in broader spectrum. I quickly was fascinated by the computer systems at his work place, which greatly sparked my interest in computer science. I can always remember the feeling of wanting to know just how computers worked, why they worked and what else they could do. Throughout my school career I have always loved chemistry. In Chemistry there was always a sense that there was more, there was always something new and exciting to be discovered and theories to be proven (or even disproven). Chemistry was the main subject with a real practical aspect to it during school and it is this, along with my genuine fascination with the subject, which fuels my desire to study it further.
Math is a subject has always and will continue to pulled my interests. This was because it was a subject that would lead me to a single unique answer. Once I started to attend high school, physics then opened up another interest, not only with math, but an interest in Math with actual application into the real world. With physics, it allowed me to see how math could be used to predict events. The classes that I have taken that has shaped my interests for my major of science in mathematics are Physics, and Computer Science.
Chemical engineering, a prominent and growing career, requires a detailed understanding of the how and why chemical processes work and also how they can be further improved. To develop new improvised methods for these processes to function more useful and economical, a chemical engineer uses theories and laws of chemistry. They are, however, often referred to as the "universal engineer" because they must not only have a broad knowledge of chemistry and physics but also of mechanical and electrical engineering.
My passion for both software and hardware behind it stems from having been fortunate enough to be introduced to it at a young age. What may have originally been a simple fondness for video games developed into a curiosity regarding the nuts and bolts of the computer and a dedication to improve them. Subsequently, I plan to pursue software engineering in the future.
A liking for science, and a passion towards technology enabled me to choose Earth Science as a profession. From a very younger age I became very passionate about the day to day marvels of science happened around this curiosity of mine eventually was discovered by my teachers and to have a better understanding on every day science I took science subjects in my O and A levels.
The growing relevance of Chemical Engineering in today’s world, from energy & oil industries to pharmaceuticals & biotechnology, and a keen desire for applying this knowledge in interrelated spheres motivates me to pursue a Master’s degree in this field. My interest in science goes back to the time when I was in school. We had a young and enthusiastic teacher who took us on field trips and visits to science fairs and museums. This nascent interest has only burgeoned through my years in school and high school, as I have learnt more about the subject. In the long run, I see myself as a part of a leading research group, either as a faculty member or in the R&D department of an organisation contributing my bit to the field of Chemical Engineering. As a research scientist, I hope to make a difference in this field and learn more through the innovative challenges.
