We all want to reach success in our life, but some are willing to cheat just to get there. This plague of dishonesty has spread to many students across the country which is why cheating is worse now than it was when our parents were in school. Deceiving teachers on tests and projects has become much more popular for our generation because there are so many ways to cheat, it becomes an addiction, and we have different virtues than our parents did when they were growing up.

Cheating was not as bad when our parents were in school because since many students did not try it, they did not become an addicted like students are today. The only scary part about tricking teachers on tests is getting caught, therefore if you get away with it you feel the need to do it again. According to CBC studies there are high percentages of cheating students in Canada such as 73% have cheated on written work in high school, 58% have cheated on a test in high school, 18% of students have cheated as undergrads, and 8% have helped someone else cheat. The reason for the extreme growth of cheating by students over the years is that students in this generation have become addicted to the rush and rewards that it gives them. Since cheating was a lot less frequent when our parents were in school it was not so much an addiction as it was a risk very few students were willing to take, due to the evolution of cheating students today have made a habit out of it. When people smoke, they know the risk of what they are doing, but the smoke anyway because they are addicted, much like cheating the student knows what they are doing is wrong but do it anyway because they are addicted to what cheating can get them. Unlike students today, our parents generation did not get get addicted to this drug of dishonesty because they had the capability to refuse to cheat because they had better
The thing that confuses me are the reasons why people cheat. I know that in college life, it is clear that grades are important. Since grades are so important, people want to do better and want to succeed in their classes that they are taking. By cheating, it makes it easier for them to get a better grade. I agree that it is not an honest thing to do, but it is clear that they are doing it for a reason, to benefit themselves. Also, people want to help their friends succeed so that is another part of it. I think if schools wanted to get rid of cheating, they should not focus on the grades as much. Grading people is important, but is it that important if everyone cheats? I also see how people want to be viewed as honest. I do not think people want to cheat because they think they will be viewed as immoral. Also, they could be punished which would hurt them as well. If everyone cheats in schools, why not just allow it? That is the way that the world is running currently and everyone is cheating their way through
That stomach churning feeling of guilt for many seems to appear as a small price to pay when completing an act of academic dishonesty. Colleen Wenke wrote an essay on cheating eighteen years ago called “Too Much Pressure”. In the past fifty years, the number of students who admit to cheating has increased fifty to seventy percent(Gaffe). Many people wonder what leads the students to make this unjust decision. Today, the reason for a rise in cheaters is because of how easy it has become, leading many students to the false conclusion that they aren’t breaking any rules; It is simply viewed as a shortcut to success in the classroom and beyond.
Situations of cheating have seemed to become more and more commonplace when the student is bored by the subject material, poor teaching and or feels they have no use for the knowledge. Kohn even states in his article, “cheating is more common when students experience the academic tasks they’ve been given as boring, irrelevant, or overwhelming.” This infers that if a student were attending a school interested in learning about art, the student maybe more inclined to cheat in a business accounting class due to the fact the student would find the subject material irrelevant to them and their future. Students seem to be less inclined to cheat and it “is relatively rare in classrooms where the learning is genuinely engaging and meaningful to students and where a commitment to exploring significant ideas hasn’t been eclipsed by a single-minded emphasis on “rigor”” (Kohn). To simplify everything mentioned above; students are inclined to cheat in school when they are disinterested in the subject material and or are overwhelmed by in assignment or finally the result in a poor teacher. Cheating is a big issue that has reached the most competitive campuses around the United States. It is increasing more and more with the new technology that we have in the 21st century because students have easy access to many sources of information. Cheating is something all students have done at some point in their lives, but as they reach a higher academic level, they are faced with more rigorous consequences that can affect their futures in many different ways. Cheating might be seen as an easy way to obtain a good grade, get into a good college, or maintain scholarships or financial aid, but the consequences could affect the life and the future of the student.
High school and college student ethics have gotten worse because of the amount of homework students receive from their classes which makes students stress out. Students who are in honors or advanced placement classes are more prone to cheat because of all the work they have to do. Modern students face many pressures for academic success. They are often unwilling to disappoint their parents or spouses. Some fear that not cheating will weaken a student’s ability to compete with their peers. They rationalize their unethical behavior, unwilling to accept a poor grade, consequently justifying cheating as the only means to that end.
Academic dishonesty has been a big issue that many faculties have to deal with all the time in classrooms in today’s academic environment. In a report founded by Thomas & O’Reilly (2002), “74 percent of American students admit to cheating on an exam. So imagine how many really are. Forty percent of adolescents say they have stolen from a store and a whopping 93 percent say they lie.” With such a huge percentage of students cheating with the use of technology, it has become an epidemic that is spreading like wild fire. Since technology was introduced in the class environment, it has become the number one concern to some instructors because many students are not using it too learn, but instead students are using technology to cheat in assignments and other work that may involve school work.
...Almost every student nowadays can admit to cheating at some point in their educational career, but motives as to why they cheat vary and can’t be narrowed down to one reason. There are many excuses as to why all levels of students chose to cheat no matter how wrong or unexpected it is. Cheating is a large problem, but members of universities and schools can discourage it and try to prevent it as much as possible. Not only should it be frowned upon, but it also should be a priority to make it next to impossible to do. Advisers can reduce the temptation of cheating by significantly decreasing the amount of true and false and multiple choice questions on exams and quizzes. Also by understanding the students social and parental pressures in a person at that age’s life is important and contributes to decreasing the amount of students cheating in schools and universities.
In the everyday world, guilt riddles us all. Perhaps it crept up on us when we “accidently” pocketed gum from the supermarket or nonchalantly stretched and caught a glimpse of another student’s test. At least during one point of life, our names found themselves engraved onto Santa’s naughty list. Every one of us cheats on at least something, and this leads to a question of common events in life. From a young age we are taught the differences between right and wrong, but as we get older the line between moral and immoral is often blurred. Things that were once thought of as unacceptable are now perfectly fine in our minds. Have you ever seen anyone cheat on an assignment or exam? Do you know anyone that’s been expelled from school for cheating? What if it was discovered that a U.S. senator plagiarized his college thesis paper? Imagine if it got out that one of the most respected universities in the U.S. was involved in a huge fraud scandal that involved thousands of students. Academic cheating is a terrible offense because it is unethical, self-degrading, and can be detrimental to the learning environment.
Cheating, in most societies, was taught to be bad and wrong. Google’s definition for cheating is “act dishonestly or unfairly in order to gain an advantage, especially in a game or examination.” Most parents and teachers have also taught their children these same basics, but are they always right? If cheating will advance you and excel you in your own life, then why is it so vile? If someone cheated on their test or in their ball game to allow them to win, is it really considered wrong?

Are you a cheater? One of the biggest questions in life no matter what you do is that, is cheating wrong. Everyone has there on personal opinion about cheating but as for me I think cheating isn’t right because cheating is an unfair advantage. I came up with three main reasons why cheating is wrong. Cheating is wrong because it brings an unfair advantage, you will never be able to truly say you worked for it, and it’s not just wrong for school cheating is wrong on every level no matter what you do.
There is never a good reason to lie. I disagree because I would lie in order to save my friend’s feelings. For example, when a friend of mine worked on a project and asked me, “is it good?” I lied and told her it was.
The major reason which leads to popularity of cheating is that students always desire to have good marks. Today’s academic system is generally based on grade point average or some other alphabetical or numerical representation of academic skill. If students notice that many classmates have high marks, they also want the fame of having good grades. Therefore, this pressure unintentionally causes students to value their goods marks much more than their knowledge. Eventually, students do anything to achieve good marks, even cheating in exams.
