There are many reasons why students might cheat on their schoolwork, and we can do nothing about it. An American writer and author, David Callahan, wrote the book “Cheating Culture.” An excerpt from his book, “A Better Way to Prevent Cheating: Appeal to Fairness,” is published in many newspapers and explains why students cheat. At the end of the article, he explains that cheating could stop if school faculty made it a matter of justice and put it on the students to stand up against cheating. Even though Callahan appeals to justice as a solution to academic honesty, cheating will never go away because it can lead to success, create the perception of fairness, and improve grades, which leads to a better job. Without cheating, most people in the higher classes would not be where they are now. Many people we know, like famous baseball players and rich people like Elon Musk, have cheated. Cheating happens daily in the real world, helping people with their jobs and extracurricular activities. Cheating is never going to leave school, because it is never going to leave the world. Seeing others cheat can give students the perception that it is only fair if they cheat, too. In David's article, he explains, “Cheating is nothing but unfair. Cheaters get rewards they do not deserve, like scholarships, admission to college or grad school, internships, and jobs. Cheating is the antithesis of equal opportunity” (Callahan 453). It is unfair to students who do not cheat because they are less likely to get jobs and opportunities. Students who do not cheat miss out on things like college and internships because their work is not as good as those who cheat. Cheaters have an unfair advantage of perfecting their work and responding perfectly to everything. This issue makes students who do their work the right way feel as if it is only fair that they should be able to cheat, too, causing an endless cycle of
