Melting glaciers: sign of climate change The documentary Chasing Ice utilizes high techniques of photography with personal experience to persuade the audience to consider the reality of climate change. Targeting skeptics who may not realize or believe the significance of climate change and has opposite opinion with this issue. This movie moves viewers to feel the tension and seriousness of climate change by using low tones of voices and fast tempo music. The film is written by Mark Monre, who wrote about the effects of climate change that were publicized by National Geographic photographer Jame Balog and his Extreme Ice Survey. Monre uses various strategies to provide the impactful photos as evidence that audiences are able to recognize, and …show more content…
In the beginning of the film, the music is very fast tempo and using string music instrument to make the situation tenser and the faster temp and lower voice increase and build up the climax situation. This strategy leads the viewer to feel a sense of seriousness and guilt. In the end of the film, the music called “Before My Time” composed by J. Ralph, this music become much slower than before, and it fit into the images of picturesque environment and appeals to the viewer’s emotion such as sadness and sorrow. Moreover, the song lyrics are pathetically touching, it says “If should run ten thousand mile home Would you be there?.” This is because the viewer may feel regretful that people are a main factor to the climate change and did not take responsibility to protect the beautiful environment. This strategies may enhance to appeal the pathos and build a credibility of this whole …show more content…
The visual in the film make strong appeals to logos, pathos, and ethos. He uses photos to compare the before and after, six months later in the same position of angles when he noticed a huge and enormous glacier has disappeared. This evidence evokes viewers’ curiosity and credibility, the audience may be terrified and shocked with these two pictures and some audiences may not trust the photography because so many techniques are developed. Through Monre’s visual strategy persuades audience to consider and relate to the issue of climate change. Another example of this method is in Balog’s presentation; he uses time-lapsed photos to show how glaciers were melting down faster than what people expected and he marked the date of year and number of miles under the photos. This photo may appear logical to viewers because they are able to see the big changes by time passing and it also can be logical evidence rather than the first example. He is also using different angles of time lapsed photo to support the evidence that those who are not believe climate change is not happening and suspicious about the technique of photography. Monre implements the rhetorical strategy of image to appeal to pathos, using different angles to develop credibility, and the specific date to show the image as remarkable
The Little Ice Age by Brian Fagan is a novel that discussed different climate periods that occurred. The setting of the novel occurred in Europe from 1300 to 1850. Throughout that time period the climate in Europe was changing quite drastically. The layout of this book was done chronologically and thematically. Fagan broke down the book into four different parts: Warmth and its Aftermath, Cooling Begins, The End of the “Full World”, and The Modern Warm Period. He also went further into breaking down each section from discussing the medieval warm period, to the climate seesaw, then to the specter of hunger, finally to a warmer greenhouse as well as other things in between. The way he wrote the book was not based on his personal experience. It
An Inconvenient Truth is a documentary film in which basis are put long-term researches of changes of climate, level of carbonic gas in the atmosphere, and conditions of polar ices. In this film, El Gore, a presidential candidate of 2000 and former vice president of the United States, explains the scientific and political view of global warming and its serious consequences that we already observe on Earth, and other more tragic consequences that are still to come in the near future if we do not reduce emissions of exhaust gas in the atmosphere. Nothing especially new about the global warning is presented in the film, but what made this film effective is, firs of all, the fact that El Gore, a public and well known figure in the United States, is the main protagonist of the film. Another effective point in the film is that El Gore put all the scientific work together and showed that the problem is real, it is not a myth, and it should not be ignored any longer.
She uses Perito Moreno as an example and divides her essay into categories: admiration for glaciers, how glaciers function, the inside of glaciers, and global warming effects. Satire may not be found in this essay, but we still get a sense of entertainment with the way she makes nature seem like it’s something that is taken for granted. She opens our eyes to the power something as simple as a glacier withholds in order to see the big threat behind all environmental destruction. Her uses of analogies clarify the purpose of her essay by stating them in the beginning of her paragraphs while defining them clearly right afterwards. One example is “a glacier is time incarnate” (Ehrlich 2). In this quote Ehrlich wants us to know that losing a glacier is like losing any human because we lose all kinds of history that cannot be restored ever again. She even references the bible to describe this fall we are living with the loss of glaciers. Ehrlich made a connection between “the rise of our smokestack and tailpipe society” and the rise in water and air temperatures by using the oxygen bubbles the glaciers provide (Ehrlich 2). She state “as snow becomes firm and then ice, oxygen bubbles are trapped in the glacier, providing samples of ancient atmosphere: carbon dioxide and methane” (Ehrlich 2). Our cars and factories produce these gases in large amounts which have greatly affected our air quality and the cleanliness as well as freshness of our water. She manages to make her point clear, making the reader look at nature with another
believe the film is saying, and what effect music has had on projecting the films overall message.
For this essay I will be looking at the work of Hans Zimmer to discuss how music in film engages the viewer and evokes emotion and pulls the viewer toward the film. Hans Zimmer is a German born music composer. Hans Zimmer’s love of music stems from his childhood when he learned how to play various instruments. Before Zimmer began composing music for films he was in a well-known band. The band was called The Buggles whom were famous for their song Video Killed the Radio Star. After the Buggles Zimmer played in other bands but never had another hit. As Zimmer has progressed as a film composer so has his list of nominations and awards. Zimmer has won 4 Grammy Awards and 2 Golden Globes and many more for his outstanding film scores. The reason I chose to write this essay on Zimmer was that his genres and music score are extremely versatile ranging from animations to comedy to dark thrillers. This is important to highlight as it shows Zimmer can create almost any atmosphere with his music whether it be sad or creating tension that all cause us to engage with the film. Zimmer's use of themes and introduction of different instruments allowed him to create these wonderful engaging film score. In this essay I will look at three films by Hans Zimmer these are The Holiday Rush and Rain Man.
The novel Icebound was not originally published by Dean Koontz or called Icebound, it was instead published in 1976 under Koontz’s pseudonym, David Axton, and had its original title, Prison of Ice. I really enjoyed this novel. It kind of reminded me of the new movie Murder on the Orient Express because it had an attack, an investigation, and bringing the attacker to justice, even though it meant killing the killer.
One motif which reappears in the film is the power of nature, especially in relation to the individual. In fact, the film begins with a majestic shot of the Rocky Mountains showing its beauty and height. The beauty of nature and even friendliness of nature changes as the film develops. As the movie progresses the snow still seems white and pure, almost virgin like, but nature becomes an isolating force, not providing the family with a retreat from the pressures of modern life, but forcing the family to turn in on its dysfunctional and psychopathic self. Imprisoned by the snow and the tall mountains , the family seems weak and vulnerable.
The whole documentary tackled consequences which also have consequences. This in turn somehow forms a chain reaction of consequences which are also interrelated. As a result of these, climate change is considered as an accelerant to instability and a catalyst for conflict.
Chasing Ice covers the long debated topic of global warming and whether or not human activity is currently causing global temperatures to rise. Evidence suggests that increased carbon dioxide emissions over the past couple hundred years are responsible for the warming of the Earth’s surface, and thus increasing the levels of the ocean due to an accelerated rate of ice melting. We discussed this same topic in class and how humans are contributing to the greenhouse effect which plays a large role in trapping these unnatural amounts of gases such as carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere and causing a rise in the number of natural disasters around the world.
The movie Frozen, is one filled with laughter, happiness, and sadness. We see the bond of two sisters who were once so close, be torn apart, and how the bond and love between them ends up saving each other's lives. A major part of the movie that we see is the power that Elsa holds and how this power can not only bring everyone together, but also tear them apart. After Elsa`s power is revealed and she leaves, we see that the love of two sisters and family, is stronger than any other love. The love of family overpowers everything.
The audience can be persuaded through their emotion (Cockcroft and Cockcroft, 2005). High pathos makes the audience more likely to be persuaded (Dlugan, 2007b). On the one hand, in this speech, Leonardo invoked the fear of audience by quoting the scientific community’s prognosis, ‘If we do not act together, we will surely perish’. Later in the speech, he listed the specific actions and asked the leaders for action. He also cited the statement of the chief of the US navy, ‘climate change is our single greatest security threat’, which also trigger the fear of the audience. On the other hand, Dicaprio said solving this crisis is not a question of politics, but our moral obligation, which can inspire a strong sense of responsibility and mission. Through triggering audience emotion, Dicaprio can make his audience act together and face the crisis of climate
Subpoint A: Not long ago, a documentary film called “An Inconvenient truth” came out in 2006. This film raised international public awareness of climate change and reenergizing the environmental movement. A former U.S Vice president Al Gore campaigned to educate citizens about global warming through a simp...
The film industry has become a large part of part of human culture for over a millennium. Since the development of the motion picture camera in the 1890s, shortly followed by the establishment of production companies, film has vastly gained popularity. While there are many different reasons of the existence of films, one of the main purposes is to convey a message to the viewer. Climate change and the environment is a frequently discussed topic in films. This essay will discuss three common facts and fallacies found in popular movie culture by comparison of peer reviewed journals.
I have watched a documentary called “The Truth About Climate Change” which provide great information and evidence about the facts and consequences of climate change. “The Truth About Climate Change” is talking about the effect, fact and solution to the climate change. It is produced by the BBC, which is a famous television channel all over the world. The documentary takes part everywhere, such as the Arctic region, Amazon rainforest or the desert in China. “The Truth About Climate Change” provides very powerful argument and data to persuade the audience about how the climate change affects
