The documentaries on a variety of topics addressing the environment’s health were enlightening while simultaneously heart-wrenching. Repeatedly viewing the massive destructive tendencies that now are prevalent in Western and most developed nations makes one wonder how we have let things get this far. The documentaries on the oil industries fracking policies that disregard the impact not only on the environment but the irrefutable costs to human health display the corruption and immoral nature of corporate greed. Whereas, the increase in cases of antibiotic-resistant diseases, highlight the need for increased public health communications to educate the public on personal practices alongside increased regulations and precautionary methods to …show more content…
Here is tangible evidence of the impact that humans are impacting the earth’s ability to sustain life in a safe and healthy manner. People have seen the polar icecap melts with polar bears starving for food because of the changing landscape. They lament that this is just a terrible outcome; however, they make no personal behavioral changes. Chasing Ice is personally significant to this author because of a past career in the fuel industry a remaining skeptic to the dramatic relaying of human behavioral impacts worldwide. It is the opinion of this author that most documentaries do not present a balanced view of reality. This film through its beautiful and haunting footage provides the irrefutable truth that humans are negatively impacting the environment. Throughout this course, the biggest lesson learned has been to not take anything at face value or listen to opposing side of the often biased and sensationalized media but to do the research and learn the facts regarding environmental health. Individuals can become better educated to change not only their personal behaviors and to advocate for larger change. Chasing Ice was a call-to-action, motivating and reinforcing the decisions this author has taken in recent years to move into the public health field to make a greater impact on people’s and the environment’s health. Based on this film and the overall course material, the author’s personal changes will continue to be making substantial efforts towards a lowered household carbon footprint and to share the knowledge of how we must all be more diligent in making sustainable changes that impact our
The environment has become a popular topic this year due to our on-going drought. It has always been a serious issue; something Saukko informs us in her sarcastic essay “How to Poison the Earth”. She uses sarcasm and irony in her essay hoping her readers will do the complete opposite of what she is saying because of the stress she puts on the harming chemicals we use every day. We do not appreciate our environment and take it for granted. This ideal is what Ehrlich's essay “Chronicles of Ice” focuses on by using analogies and scientific definitions to describe aspects of glaciers. The melting of the glaciers introduces us to the topic of global warming and how our society is doing nothing to stop it from getting worse. Gawande’s “The Cancer-Cluster
Human nature can be extremely rough and create dangerous situations. It also affects how people behave. The author Jim Heynen wrote a short story called “What Happened During the Ice Storm” to shows how some boys acted differently than the norm in a harsh situation. After carefully reading the short story the reader will understand that human nature can create some challenging situations for people and people behave to those challenging situations.
The movies Erin Brockovich and A Civil Action were in my opinion extraordinary, in regards to the law and public health perspectives shown. Both films were very similar on the subject of water pollution and the effects on the human body. These films dealt with issues that are still occurring in today’s society because of the neglect of multi-billion dollar companies. These companies show no appreciation for the innocent residents in their immediate area of pollution.
The novel Icebound was not originally published by Dean Koontz or called Icebound, it was instead published in 1976 under Koontz’s pseudonym, David Axton, and had its original title, Prison of Ice. I really enjoyed this novel. It kind of reminded me of the new movie Murder on the Orient Express because it had an attack, an investigation, and bringing the attacker to justice, even though it meant killing the killer.
I chose to watch the Frontline episode on “Poisoned Waters”. This documentary showed the environmental issues involving case studies on the Chesapeake Bay and Puget Sound. By examining how these rising pollutants along with industrial contaminants like PCB, lead, mercury and agricultural pollution. America has kept from making many of the nation’s waterways fishable and swim able again. This was a goal set by Congress nearly four decades ago.
The topic of climate change and global warming has always been one of great debate and controversy; however, it’s clear to see that Canadians should take precautions to avoid the problems their country faces. The Canadian government should do everyth...
Overview Climate change and global warming seem to be in the discussions of everyone today, but based on Linda Marsa, the author of Fevered, little is being done to fully cover the subject by the media and other relevant institutions such as governments. Marsa in this book wants to enlighten the readers about the impact of deteriorating climatic conditions on people’s lives. She argues that people will suffer a great deal of misfortunes, sickness, hunger, and starvation if the levels of pollution and cutting down of trees are not tamed. Marsa’s message is clear in the book; human lives are at stake because of continued climate change and pollution of the environment. She states that human beings are unable to see the environmental warning signs, which are
The first part of this essay discusses what the human species has done to deal with the problem of climate change. While some improvements have been made, the problem has not been addressed aggressively enough to stop the damage. What is amazing about this is the denial of so many people that problems exist. If they do realize the risks, they are simply not taking actions to contain the damage.
The article I read is Who Killed the Iceman? Clues Emerge in a Very Cold Case published by The New York Times on March 26th, 2017. This article is about how Detective Inspector Alexander Horn of the Munich Police was called by the head of a small Italian museum in Bolzano, Italy. Angelika Fleckinger is the director of the South Tyrol Museum of Archeology and wanted help solving a cold case. The case was about an unknown victim, nicknamed Ötzi, who has been in cold storage for a quarter-century. Ötzi is often called the Iceman as he is the worlds most perfectly preserved mummy, a Copper Age man who had been frozen inside a glacier along the Northern Italy border with Austria until warming global temperatures melted the ice and two hikers discovered him in 1991. The cause of
Although more people are aware of the impacts we have on our environment, there are still people that choose to ignore scientific evidence, or do not fully understand the consequences. Further education and research are critical components in an effort to become more sustainable. Fortunately, younger generations are learning about the need to address environmental issues so that changes can be made to ensure our way of life is sustainable.
The seriousness of global warming effects both the environment and the people living in it. The question is how do Americans effect the environment and what can we do to fix it? Americans everyday use automobiles as a form of transportation, and although it may seem harmless, the use of these cars are proving to be detrimental in the end. Author Margaret Kriz (2006) states that, “the vast majority of scientists who study Earth's climate agree that the planet is warming, and they blame the greenhouse gases that accumulate in the a...
Global warming is one of the most serious issues that the human species face today, yet the majority of the population does not pay attention to it. People are not aware of the dangers and do not care about it much because the main effects will affect the next generation and not themselves. Global warming is happening and it is the reason for changing weather and weather extremes such as earthquakes, floods and wildfires. Global warming is caused by societies lifestyle and these lifestyles destroy the environment and affect the whole world. The use of cars, trains, planes, as well as wasting energy for people’s entertainment has a price; this price is that society is in danger.
One of the most substantial problems in the world today is global warming. This gradual warming of the earth is in occurrence at an extremely slow rate but it is happening. Many scientists believe that as human’s work and release greenhouse gases into the earth’s atmosphere, it can become dangerous for the long lasting life of humans and our environment. “Unless we take immediate action, the impacts of global warming will continue to intensify, grow ever more costly and damaging, and increasingly affect the entire planet - including you, your community, and your family” (“Global Warming Impacts”). Everyone should be knowledgeable about global warming and the dangers that it brings to our planet. This essay will examine
Are you aware of the detrimental impacts that we have had on our environment? Every second, the Earth is being polluted by poisonous gases, waste products and due to human activities, the world’s climate is dramatically changing. In other words, these impacts do not only harm our environment but also our health. It has been scientifically proven that air pollution causes respiratory diseases and cancer, due to the inhalation of all the harmful chemicals. Water pollution can also lead to typhoid, diarrheal diseases and other waterborne disease, due to the intake of bacteria and parasites. Many people have died due to these health-related illnesses. So why are we still living in this awful condition? Air sustains us and water is a basic necessity, so we should do what we can to prevent pollution. In short, we should protect our environment to ensure a healthy life a...
