When he was 7 coaches noticed that he was soon to be a football star. In his teen years he was not only in football, but boy scouts, he was also in the choir at church, and in the marching band at his church. As much as he liked playing football, school came first, he spent many times reading books, and studying. In Jr. High Walter didn’t really want to play football, he usually went to his brothers games and practices. One day when practice was over, Eddie’s coach asked Walter to try out for the team, Eddie’s coach realized what talent he had, but was confused as to why he wasn’t going out. So the next day Walter tried out, at the end of the practice, Coach came up to Walter and said, “ Congrats you made the team”, Walter didn’t know how to react because he was scared and excited at the same time.
In sports, there is no shortage of black success stories. Meanwhile, two black men of prominence in Odessa (who are not athletes) fell from grace. Willie Hammond Jr. (the first black city councilor and county commissioner) and Laurence Hurd (a minister and desegregation supporter) were glimmers of hope for the black community that were both snuffed out. Hammond was arrested on charges of arson conspiracy and perjury and Hurd is in prison for burglary and robbery, leaving a hole in the morale of the black community that was not repaired. These losses, combined the with negative news of black people circulated via media, made the possibility of succeeding in a white man’s world inconceivable. Yet, there is no shortage of black success stories in sports, like Michael Jordan and Bo Jackson; in every area that is not a “rich man’s sport”, black athletes dominate. To the poor children on the Southside, there is something very alluring about the “Cinderella stories” of men from poor black neighborhoods rising to prominence through sports. Based on these examples, there seem to only be two paths for a black teen to take: criminal or athlete. Many of these teens aspire to be sports stars and depend on nothing else because there is nothing else. In The United States the number of people in prison is over two million, and of those two million it is estimated that two thirds of them will be back in prison within three years (Correctional Populations). Some people argue that rehabilitation is the most effective way to handle prisoners, but the risks don’t outweigh the benefits, especially for murderers. Nobles was an example of a murderer who appeared rehabilitated, but under close examination of his actions, he was no more than a manipulating sociopath. Nobles was not rehabilitated because his actions in court showed how he felt, his faith was a facade, and he was a schizophrenic.

He lost his arm due to extreme circumstances but never used his handicap as an excuse to quit. His story is one that began simple enough, but it changed into one to be told for generations to come. The following will include a brief bio, the adversity Ralston faced, how he overcame it, and how this man exemplifies perseverance. Aron Ralston could not control the adversity befell him, but he chose to persevere. Even though he endured horrific odds, he never let that define him.
Andrew Foster was a teacher, missionary, and pioneer, He dedicated his life to helping Deaf people learn ASL, and working to assure that Deaf people in Africa had access to education. He was passionate about helping the less fortunate, and felt compelled to go to Africa to do mission work. PSYCOSOCIAL THEORY- ERIKSON German theorist Erik Erikson drew on Freud’s psychosexual theory to develop his psychosocial development theory. Erikson describes his theory as a blend of an individual’s internal psychological works and the external social influences.
