Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre I have chosen the night with Mr Mason and the morning after because there is such a contrast between the two moments. The setting in both places reflects on what is happening between the people involved. The Red Room is also an important episode in the book and in Jane's life. She has been banished to the Red Room as her punishment for being naughty and this makes her very angry because it is not her fault that she is there. Her cousin, John, struck her on the head with a book for no reason and Jane had retaliated with words. At this John charged at her. After Mrs Reed had arrived on the scene, she immediately assumed that Jane was the cause of the trouble and it was she that was punished. If it hadn't been a one off then maybe Jane wouldn't have been so angry but everyday she got the blame for something that wasn't her fault. Her cousins were spiteful and Mrs Reed, her benefactress, was cruel and picked on her. As you can imagine Jane was furious. I don't think that it is a coincidence that Charlotte Brontë had chosen this to be the "Red Room" because it reflects well on Jane's angry, blood red mood. "Curtains of deep red", "covered with a crimson cloth", "the carpet was red". At this time Jane would have a been a very young, small girl, and the room, which we know is big, "it was one of the largest and stateliest chambers in the mansion", would have been a very scary place especially as she knows that her uncle, the late Mr Reed, died in the very room she was in on the bed she was next to. This makes her very uneasy. "Mr Reed had been dead nine years; it was in this chamber he breathed his last; here he lay in this state; hence his coffin was borne by undertakers men; and since that day, a sense of dreary consecration had guarded it from frequent intrusion.

In the beginning of Jane Eyre, Jane struggles against Bessie, the nurse at Gateshead Hall, and says, I resisted all the way: a new thing for me…"(Chapter 2). This sentence foreshadows what will be an important theme of the rest of the book, that of female independence or rebelliousness. Jane is here resisting her unfair punishment, but throughout the novel she expresses her opinions on the state of women.
