Opening the front door to the cabin, as Charlie stood just behind him holding the screen door open, Bass was assaulted by stale air and dust. “Ronnie wasn’t joking about it being shut up. We need to open the windows and get some fresh air in here,” Charlie commented as she stepped around him. They walked through the house together, the ground floor one large space that combined living, dining, kitchen, and a washroom. Walking to the sink, Bass primed the pumped and pulled on the lever. After four or five pumps, water came rushing out, causing Charlie to gasp in delight. Storing the tack in the back of the pickup, they ultimately tied the horses up outside with access to the wild growing grasses. Once they were back inside, Charlie found their bag of food while Bass started a fire in the cook stove. “I’ll need to check out the stovepipe tomorrow but as long as it doesn’t smoke us out tonight, we can have something beside jerky and fruit.” “That’ll be a nice change,” Charlie sighed tiredly as she watched him hunt for various pots and pans giving them a good rinse in the sink. Rice went into one and beans into the other. “Rice and beans. How exciting,” she teased. He pointed a finger at her, scolding her silently as he went about his work. Charlie smirked, walking back out into the main part of the room to start sorting through their supplies. Uncle Tom’s Cabin, by Harriet Beecher Stowe is a classic novel that some people claimed evoked the American Civil War. Stowe motivated people to take sides over the issue of slavery by discussing the issue and showing the cruel aspects of it. The main focus of the novel was to show whites that African American’s have souls and feelings like any other human; it was common for whites at the time to view blacks as cattle. Families were separated, and the white people’s reasoning was that blacks did not feel the loss the same way a white person would. Stowe’s basic argument is that it is wrong to mistreat blacks because they suffer just as much as whites.

He entered the room and opened the lamp that only produced a dim light. Mike then placed his overnight case on the floor and shut the door. He walked farther in and saw two doors, one was the washroom and the other one was the closet. Mr. Enslin then took out his Sony minicorder and started to describe what he observed. On the walls, there was an amber colored wallpaper with some dark stains, and the floor was wooden, making a cracking sound every time someone stepped on it. In front of the window, there was a long and silky burgundy curtain. The room did not have much furniture either. There was a queen sized bed white cream colored sheets, one average sized lamp, an old phone, two red sofa chairs, a coffee table, a little refrigerator and a toaster which was placed on top of the coffee table. In the room, there was also two framed pictures. One was a picture of an old town and the other picture was a small family on a farm. Mike had also realized that the room had a particular smell; it smelled like an old basement that had not been ...
