Charles Monroe Schulz was the famous American cartoonist who created the well-known comic/ T.V. show, "Peanuts".
On November 26, 1922 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Dena Halverson and Carl Schulz gave birth to their first and only child, Charles Monroe Schulz. His father, Carl Schulz, was born in Germany and his mother, Dena Halverson, was Norwegian. His uncle called him, "Sparky" after the horse in Billy DeBeck's comic strip, "Barney Google". Schulz loved to draw. He sometimes drew his family dog, "Spike", who ate weird things such as pins and tacks. (artcollection.mycrom.it) In 1937, Schulz drew a picture of Spike and sent it to "Ripley's Believe It or Not!"(wikipedia.org) The picture was put into Robert Ripley's combined panel with the caption: "A hunting dog that eats pins, tacks and razor blades is owned by C.F. Schulz, St. Paul, Minn. and 'Drawn by Sparky'". Schulz went to Richards Gordon Elementary School in St. Paul. He ended up skipping two half-grades. He was said to be "shy" and "timid" as a teenager. It might have been because he was the youngest in his class at Central High School. During his time in high school, he entered some of his drawings to his high school yearbook, but they got rejected. 60 years later, a 5-foot statue of "Snoopy" was placed in the school's main office.
In February 1943, Schulz was drafted into the United States Army.(peanuts.wikia.com) Around the same time, his mother, Dena, died from cancer. His mother's death had a very strong impact on him. Schulz served as a staff sergeant with the 20th Armored Division in Europe. He was also a squad leader on a .50 caliber machine gun team. 1938-1941 His first dog was an English Shepard named Rex, who was a one man dog and his constant traveling companion. Beginning at about age three, he and his dog Rex had an insatiable desire to explore any place that was outside the house and within walking distance. Since both his mother and dad worked long hours at their respective jobs, he had a daytime black maid whose name was Sanctum. Every time Sanctum would turn her back he and his dog would “run off” and poor Sanctum would telephone his mother and in dismay advise her that “Sonny” had run off again. Since Elkhart had a population of about five hundred, most of the citizens had learned to keep a lookout for this wandering boy. When he was spotted by one of the townsfolk, they would call his mother and tell her of his doings and location. His mother would leave her work, go get him, give him a spanking, and return him to the house and Sanctum. This could happen several times a day. One particular incident that wasn’t revealed to his mother until years later was when he climbed the Elkhart water tower (75 ft.). Some of the townspeople coaxed him down with the promise of candy. His mother, who finally realized that “spanking” was not a deterrent to “running off”, put him in bed for twenty four hours after one of his ventures and would not let him get up although he begged for a spanking instead. "We could describe (Heinrich) Schliemann's excavations on the hill of Hissarlik and consider their results without speaking of Troy or even alluding to it," Georges Perrot wrote in 1891 in his Journal des Savants. "Even then, they would have added a whole new chapter to the history of civilization, the history of art" (qtd. in Duchêne 87). Heinrich Schliemann's life is the stuff fairy tales are made of. A poor, uneducated, and motherless boy rises through his hard work and parsimonious lifestyle to the heights of wealth (Burg 1,2). He travels the world and learns its languages ("Heinrich Schliemann"), takes a beautiful Greek bride, and together they unearth the treasures of Troy and the citadel of Agamemnon, thereby fulfilling the dream he has chased since childhood (Calder 18,19; Burg 8). Indeed, by presenting his life in romantic autobiographies as a series of adventures, starring Heinrich Schliemann as the epic hero (Duchêne 14), he ensured his status as a lasting folk hero and perennial bestseller (Calder 19).
The animated life of Theodor Geisel is evident in his literary masterpieces. He was born on March 2, 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts to Theodor and Henrietta Geisel (Ford 14). Geisel grew up speaking German and English, and his fascination with quirky words began at an early age due to his family. For example, his sister, Margaretha, called herself Marnie Ding Ding Guy, and his first creation was the Wynnmph with ears three yards long (Kaplan). During his childhood, Geisel read widely and often - developing his voracious reading habit at an early age. By the time he was six years old, Ted was already reading Charles Dickens and Robert Louis Stevenson (Kaplan). However, college education never interested him. Labeled “Least Likely To Succeed” by his fellow classmates at Dartmouth University, Theodor often got in trouble for partying and was forced to resign from the school humor magazine. This gave birth to numerous pseudonyms of Geisel, such as L. Burbank, Thomas Mott Osbourne, Ted Seuss, Seuss, Dr. Seuss, and Theo LeSieg (Hurst). In his adult life, Theodor created various political cartoons for Judge, a humor magazine, and PM, a noted political magazine. The illustrations in these early cartoons foreshadow the quirky illustrations found in his children’s books (Kaplan). Geisel turned to writing children’s books when creating numerous ads for the popular insecticide, Flit, left him with little to do during the winter months (Hurst). By 1990, Dr. Seuss had written over forty books, two of which were Caldecott Honor books, and won two Academy Awards for his documentaries (Krull 39). Unfortunately, battling glaucoma and cataracts became too much for Theodor; he died on September...
