Charles Lutwidge Dodgson Research Paper

Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, better known by the name Lewis Carroll, was a British author, mathematician, logician, Anglican clergyman and photographer. Carroll was born in the village of Daresbury, England, on January 27, 1832 to Frances Jane Lutwidge, the wife of the Rev. Charles Dodgson. Carroll attended Richmond School, Yorkshire for a year and then continued his education on to Rugby School. He left Rugby in 1850 and continued his education at Oxford, Christ Church the college his father used to attend. Although Carroll did not always work hard, he showed brilliance and achieved excellence in mathematics. At Christ Church, Carroll received a studentship at age twenty and won a Mathematical Lectureship in 1855. He taught there for twenty-six

years. Carroll formed a good relationship with Henry Liddell, the dean of Christ College, and his family. The Liddell’s played an influential role in his writing career. On a boat trip with the Liddell’s, Carroll passed time by telling the children, especially Alice Liddell, a nonsense tale. Alice insisted that Carroll should write it down; one of Carroll’s friends, George MacDonald, read the manuscript and told him to get it published. This illustrated manuscript, became known as Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The publication of the book significantly changed Carroll’s life and with the success of the book, he was encouraged to publish its sequels, Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There.
The story revolves around Alice, a young girl who falls asleep in a meadow and dreams that she follows a white rabbit down a rabbit hole. Lewis Carroll died of bronchitis on January 14, 1898 and was buried in Mount Cemetery, Guildford.
