Charles Dickens is arguably one of the best writers of his time. He wrote many classic novels that are still appreciated today. Pip wants nothing more than to be a gentleman and to have all the money in the world; however his expectations are too great in Great Expectations. Dickens writes with humor and satire of character and social classes. Physical descriptions that bring out a character’s moral and spiritual natures are one of Dickens’s strong points according to George P Landow, an English and Arts professor from Brown University. Dickens describes even the littlest parts of the plot with great detail. Edwin P. Whipple writes in Atlantic Monthly: 1 “[Dickens] has succeeded so perfectly in… stimulating and baffling the curiosity of his readers” (156). For example, Charles Dickens “Hard Times” is a great reflection of the events that occurred in regards to the Industrial Revolution during the Victorian Era. Particularly, the section that talks about Coketown is a great representation of the massive affect that industrialization had on various cities. The Victorian Era was also a period of massive migration into large cities which frequently led to overpopulation

Charles Dickens is well known for his distinctive writing style. Few authors before or since are as adept at bringing a character to life for the reader as he was. His novels are populated with characters who seem real to his readers, perhaps even reminding them of someone they know. What readers may not know, however, is that Dickens often based some of his most famous characters, those both beloved or reviled, on people in his own life. It is possible to see the important people, places, and events of Dickens' life thinly disguised in his fiction. Stylistically, evidence of this can be seen in Great Expectations. For instance, semblances of his mother, father, past loves, and even Dickens himself are visible in the novel. However, Dickens' past influenced not only character and plot devices in Great Expectations, but also the very syntax he used to create his fiction. Parallels can be seen between his musings on his personal life and his portrayal of people and places in Great Expectations.
Charles Dickens is among some of the great fiction authors of the Victorian era. He was more than just a writer nevertheless; he inspired changes throughout the world with the use of writing. For a man to come from his childhood scenario to where he developed could be seen as amazing, but really his struggles are the blessings for his success. Charles Dickens was inspired by the struggles of the poor and the oppressed, his writing caused societal changes, and he used fictional people and events to represent the real world.
Charles Dickens was born to a clerk at the Navy Pay Office and a woman named Elizabeth on February 7, 1812, over two hundred years ago. So, little twelve-year-old Charles was taken from school to earn six shillings a week fixing labels to bottle of blacking at a boot-blacking factory to help support the Dickens’ family. This experience of being cast away at such a young age made him truly scarred for life, from the clever, sensitive boy he was mere years before to a rather... Gothic preteen. Even before gothic was goth. He had dreams of being a true gentleman when he became older, then was humiliated working with much rougher, much older men and the younger boys at the factor. Anyways, when his father was released as the family finances slowly turned to rights, the twelve-year-old Charles was further stomped on (figuratively) by his mother by her insistence that he continue at the factory. Luckily, his father prevented this and sent his son to a school in London as a day pupil. At fifteen, he found work as a office boy at an attor...
