Horses have been evolving for over 60 million years, the first horse recorded only being around 2 foot high. There are around 7 different evolutions of the horse but most research and fossil records focus on 5 different ones over the years, Eohippus (Hyracotherium leporinum), Mesohippus, Merychippus (Merychippus insignis), Pliohippus, Modern horse (Equus caballus). This research summary will go through horse evolution, Darwin’s theory of evolution, natural selection and how modern DNA technology has help solidify the history of horse evolution. Darwin’s theory of natural selection can be supported by the evolution of horses and fossil records and help in showing the diversity of life.
Charles Darwin was born in 12 February 1809, he was a
naturalist and biologist who spent his life revolutionising biology as people know it. In 1831, at 22 years old, Darwin hopped on HMS Beagle, he was the only naturalist on board. Darwin Spent 5 years travelling the globe and he found Tropical rainforests, new animals he’d never seen before and he found fossils in mountains way above sea level. The notes from this voyage help Darwin co-write the world famous book, “On the Origin of the Species” in 1855-58 (published in 1859). This book describes Darwin’s theory of evolution. Mainly focussing on his findings and workings from the voyage, and introduced the idea of evolution and the diversity of life (Biography.com, 2017). Evolution is the process which we now use to classify the change in organisms over time, these are changes in their physical or behavioural traits. Natural selection is when organisms adapt to their environment to achieve a higher survival rate and to produce more offspring.
Not only are giraffes the tallest animals in the world, they are also one of the most recognizable. Their characteristic long necks quickly captivate any audience. That being said, it is not commonly known that there are thought to be nine subspecies of Giraffa camelopardalis. In fact, there is increasing evidence that these could potentially be separate species in their own right. This paper will discuss where giraffes fit in the Tree of Life and identify the giraffe’s closest relatives, differentiate and analyze the similarities and differences between the nine subspecies, and, finally, explore any debate revolving around the phylogeny of the subspecies.

Throughout time, one theory has remained constant in terms of why giraffes developed longer necks. The idea, which was presented by Charles Darwin states quite simply that giraffes selected for longer necks in order to reach the food that was higher off the ground during the dry season. No one has ever challenged that idea until 1996. Initially, Gould argued that "the story-the giraffe evolved its long neck in competition to reach scare foliage-is supported by no evidence" (18). That's when two scientists, Robert Simmons and Lou Scheepers made the claim that necks evolved for a very different reason: sexual selection. Within this paper, information will be presented that argues both for and against the theories made by Darwin and Simmons and Scheepers.
"On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life," usually shortened to "the Origin of Species," is the full title of Charles Darwin's book, first published in 1859, in which Darwin formalized what we know today as the Theory of Evolution. Although Darwin is the most famous exponent of this theory, he was by no means the first person to suspect the workings of evolution. The scientific basis of evolution accounts for happenings that are also essential concerns of religion; both religion and science focus on the origins of humans and of biological diversity. For instance, in the reading “Truth Cannot Contradict Truth,” Pope John Paul II, addressing the Pontifical Academy of Science, discussed the matter of God as creator of man. The Pope explains that men cannot relate to animals because men are superior. The reasoning for that is because God created humans under his likeness. What the church is saying about mankind contradicts with the scientific evidence scientists have found on human evolution. By analyzing the different scientific approaches, one will be able to grasp a clear understanding that the theory of evolution by natural selection conflicts with the Judeo-Christian worldview of God as creator.

Darwin reasoned that these living things had gradually changed over time to help themselves. The changes that he found seemed to have been during the process of reproduction. The traits which would help them survive became a dominant trait, while the weaker traits became recessive. A good example of what Darwin was trying to explain is shown in giraffes. Long-necked giraffes could reach the food on the trees, while the short-necked giraffes couldn’t. Since long necks helped the giraffes eat, short-necked giraffes died off from hunger. Because of this long-necks became a dominant trait in giraffes. This is what Charles Darwin would later call natural selection.
