Beowulf is an ancient epic that connects to the time we live in now. This element discussed in the article, “Beowulf and the teaching of leadership” by Dr. L and Dr. F can mostly be seen in TV, videogames etc. Many movies such as the walking dead. I wasn’t impressed about the information provided, what I did like was the connection they had with the book, also about the potential drawback of charismatic leadership.
The information on this article impressed me in a way. This information was making made me realize how good a leader can be. “Cunning, strength, and courage were obviously prized in the warrior, and especially in a leader who maximized these warrior traits and upon whom the band depended” meaning that a warrior most
Great leaders come once in a generation. Two tremendous examples of historical leadership come in the form of Beowulf and The Rule of Saint Benedict. Beowulf and The Rule of Saint Benedict provide clear depictions of ideal leaders and subjects.
One may wonder exactly what it is that qualities a strong leader possesses. A strong leader is determined, and strong willed. They must be of good judgment, and without bias. They cannot easily be persuaded, and they are firm, yet at the same time, a good lead must also empathize with his subordinates, and have the best interest at heart for said subordinates, at all times. However, with that being said, a good leader cannot be afraid to discipline his subordinates when necessary. Unmistakably, being a leader is a very difficult feat – one which not everyone can accomplish. A leader must be an authority, a friend and a counsellor, all at once. They must be responsible, and always take into account the disadvantages of a situation. Not everyone is suitable to be a leader, whereas, just about anybody can be a good role model.
The question of “What makes a leader great?” is without one solitary answer. Effective leaders in the corporate and political arenas are deserving of praise, but because of the nature of their work, military leaders are arguably more complex and intriguing.
Leadership can be defined in a myriad of ways; but for the purpose of the question, it is but not limited to the affect someone who takes charge of a group of people with authority or rank; to be an influence to those who look to the leader. In the epic poem, “Beowulf”, there are two different views on leadership based on their leaders {i.e. King Hrothgar and Beowulf). With King Hrothgar, he accepted the help of Beowulf to fight in order to defend the people of the Herodot, “Beowulf my friend/fight for us” (457-458). Due to the understanding of his age, King Hrothgar shows humility and admirable stance, adapts to someone who admires him, allowing Beowulf to fight for the people of Herodot. Beowulf on the other hand, shows his leadership by taking the initiative and offering his aid to King Hrothgar’s people, to fight the demon Grendel, who is terrorizing the people. This leader...
The Epic poem of Beowulf is a story of heroism, loyalty, ego, and fate. To be a great leader of men; a great king of the people, you must be respected and trusted. Loyalty is given to those who earn the respect and trust of their people. Beowulf was blessed with great physical strength, the pride and fearlessness of a warrior, and an equally strong command of the spoken word, which he used skillfully to his advantage. He gained the respect and trust of nearly everyone he came in contact with, largely because he possessed the characteristics of a true hero, but in the end it was his ego that sealed his fate. Although it could be said that Beowulf’s character was flawed by an enormous ego, fueled by thoughts of immortality, it is this very trait that made him an ideal hero and king.
Beowulf is a hero that shows honor respect and courage. In lines 710-1007 is where the battle with Grendel happened. Thinking of the destruction that he will get, Grendel bursts into Heorot. Grendel tears the door from its hinges with his hands and quickly becomes a Geatish warrior while Beowulf carefully looks around. When Grendel reaches out to pick Beowulf up, he is surprised to find his arm gripped with a strength than he never knew could even happen. Confused and frightened Grendel doesn’t want to run back to the safety of the swamplands. He tries to escape, but Beowulf wrestles him down to the ground. The crash around the hall, making noise on the walls and smashing the mead-benches. Grendel begins to panic in pain and fear; the sound

For the most part, Beowulf’s characteristics describe those of a triumphant warrior who played a major role in defending the lives of his fellow citizens, while leading a thriving country. Although Beowulf soon became king, he died for his people, and was remembered as a victorious fighter. Beowulf is at least in part a study of kingship because it discusses the qualities that produce a good king, the disadvantages during his rule and how he overcame them, and the problems that arose upon his death.
Literature is found in all parts of the world, whether written or oral, and boasts the cultural differences of each area. No matter how different each of the stories is they all have one thing in common: a great leader. Each culture may have slightly different standards of a great leader, but there are a few indispensible traits that make up every leader no matter how big or how small. The story of Beowulf, the fearless warrior, is a fine example of what a great leader is made up of.
All soldiers, especially leaders, are highly recommended to keep a certain set of values that radiate throughout the entire U.S. Army. They are challenged to keep them near and dear to their hearts and to define and live them every day. A leader is one who takes these challenges serious and abides by

Storytelling, as a form of entertainment can go back to the time of Anglo-Saxons. They left behind their literature, law and language for the whole world to make use of. The most famous form of story telling of that time period was an epic. An epic as stated in A Glossary of Literary Terms by M. H. Abrams is “a long narrative poem on a serious subject, told in a formal or elevated style and centered on a heroic or quasi-divine figure on whose actions depends the fate of a tribe, a nation, or the human race” (53). An epic is like the modern day movie in which you have your hero who goes on a quest and in the middle has to fight a couple battles to show his power and eventually attains victory. Beowulf is the oldest surviving epic in the English
Beowulf as he walks in, to talk to the King of the Danes, tells him of what we would call today as a resume. Instead of writing it all down, he tells the King of all his accomplishments, and talks of his families’ legacy. This shows that Beowulf has much respect for the king and how he presents himself is important. Beowulf wants to do his duty and create a lasting legacy, “Legacy-building is about the big picture. It focuses us on the long term and gives us values by which we can judge our actions. If you are in a role of power and influence, who will you pass it on to? Do you believe this is a responsibility of leadership?” (McElroy, Ken, 2014) It is not going to be easy, but he believes he can do it, and he does. At the end of the epic, they build a tower for him, that they look at every day and talk of his many accomplishments he had. He created the ideal legacy with his
In BeoWulf, the heroic code is mentioned and expressed many times throughout the poem. The heroic code contains three elements, which are courage, loyalty, and reputation. Although all of these elements are important, I believe some are more important than others. In my opinion, Courage is the least important element. It is not something needed in life, and it is exaggerated in stories. The second element, loyalty, is a very important piece in life and in novels or poems. It can define a whole relationship between a group of people. However, the most important element is reputation. Without a reputation, no one knows who you are. A reason reputation is the most important element is because
Many great leaders have one thing in common and that is charisma. Charismatic leaders are those that have the capability to inspire and encourage people to do more than they would normally do, despite obstacles and personal sacrifice. (Daft, R.L, pg. 364) Charisma is what provokes energy and commitment out of its followers. These leaders possess the power to motivate their followers to do almost anything. They create an atmosphere of change and express an ideal vision of a better future. The most common characteristics of the charismatic leader involve maturity, communication, humility, and inspiration. These unique qualities impact their followers and conduct themselves in such a way that allows for remarkable results. Then one wonders, is charisma something you are born with? And if not, is it possible for it to be developed or even trained through life experiences?
