Modernity is a term that used by different humanities and social sciences to describe a time when the society change their socio-cultural norms, attitudes and practice to ways that match with post-medieval European practices and ways of life. Social scientists have believed that countries should met with specific dynamics and features to consider as modern city. However, does UAE consider as modern city, I will apply Giddens features and dynamics to investigate in this issue. UAE society is a society that has mixed with different people from different background, ethnicities and races. People there deal and interact with each other, and experienced the city life and modernity development, but does that makes them as modern Gideens believe that in modernity people interactions are only rarely guided by tradition only if it seems rational and justified. People became more critical about their traditions also; they evaluate and change their traditional ideas and practices. How ever, in this point the UAE cannot be considered as modern society according to Giddens modernity theory, because they stick much to traditions. To illustrate, a lot of Emirate families live in a house with extended family, including their grandfather and grandmother, they always judge the new youth, which keep the youth feel that their families watch them and they are going to be critics if they not follow the tradition. Also, they tend more to marry within the same tribal or family, because some people fear that their norms and values would affect if they practice inter-marrying. However, the younger generations are not following traditional and cultural norms and values strictly as the older generation, but it still exists. However, the Islamic religion play an important role in the society practices which keeps the society away from changing their traditions because it connects much with the Islamic principle. Moving to Giddens dimensions or features of modernity, he marks 1600s as the beginning of modernity in Europe, and it has developed because of interplay of some institutional dimensions different. Modernity features are capitalism, industrialism, coordinated administrative The UAE does not occupy any specific industrial field in the world, they may manufacture some petrochemical product, but they do not manufacture like European countries. Also, they depend much on oil revenues as source of money, and a lot of political scientist consider the UAE a rentier state. 6 Moving to coordinated administrative power, which involves the control of information and monitoring of the activities of subject by states. The UAE government is always practice different surveillance tactics to control their subjected, and on the other way, to insure security in the way that they arrested any one whom they feel may threaten the state by collecting some records thorough their surveillance methods. In the recent months, the government has captured a terrorist group of men who wanted to bomb malls and hotel in the UAE, but the government was able to capture them before they admit a crime. 2 Finally, military power, the concentration of the means of violence in the hands of the state. Day by day, the UAE became more interesting in power and the issue of security; they have started the plan of recruits of the national service recently, in 2015. 3Also, they started to purchase more military equipment since the Arab Spring started in the neighboring countries.
Between 1450 and 1750, political, economic, and artistic changes affected Western Europe. Politically, in the 1400's parts of Europe had a feudalistic government and feudal monarchies but over time Europe adapted to absolute monarchies, parliamentary monarchies, and nation-states. Economically, with feudalism declining, capitalism and mercantilism grew with the commercial revolution. In the arts, there was a change from the mostly religious art of the middle Ages to the Renaissance focus on realism, and humanistic ideas during the enlightenment revolution, also new scientific ideas during the scientific revolution. Politically, in the 1400's parts of Europe had a feudalistic government and some, feudal monarchies but over time Europe adapted to absolute monarchies, parliamentary monarchies, and nation-states.
Kinship is understood as the relationships in a society through blood and marriage. It is considered a fundamental cultural basis. From kinship systems social norms develop in the communities, including rights and responsibilities, greatly impacting behavior. These systems are described as kinship terms, relationships and groups in a society. Kinship ultimately has two core functions through kinship systems that are crucial for the preservation of culture and societies. First, these ties provide continuation of generations and family formation. The lines of descent, the upbringing and education of children, the compromise to provide material possessions and inheriting social positions are all very important. Second, since kinship is based on interdependent relationships, there are established aid systems. These, however would be compromise by the cultural implications of the extended or nuclear kin groups. Additionally, marriage may or may not be founded by blood relationships. Both the consanguineal and the affinal relationship represents a strong bond. However, the cultural norms would dictate whether both have equal value or acceptance in each society. Anthropologists have studied the implications of kinship. One of the topics researched is between kinship and social relationships. The Awlad ‘Ali Bedouin society in the Western Desert, as studied by Abu-Lughod in 1978-1980, through her ethnography ‘Veiled Sentiments’ (1986), showed distinct evidences of the influence of consanguineal and affinal ties into their idiom of kinship and how it links to their social interactions and relationships. In this way defining the different kinds of social relationships.
A family is a group of people consisting of the parents and their children who live together and they are blood related. The family is always perceived as the basic social units whether they are living together in the same compound or at far distance but are closely related especially by blood. Therefore, the family unit has had a great influence on the growth and the character traits possessed by the children as they grow up and how they perceive the society they live in. the family also shapes the children to be able to relate well with other people that are not part of their family and with a good relationship it impacts to the peace achieved in country. This paper addresses the reasons as to why the family is considered the most important agent of socialization. It’s evident that families have changed over time and they have adopted different ways of living. This paper also tackles on the causes of the dramatic changes to the American family and what the changes are. Different people with different race, gender and preferences make the family unit and this makes the difference in marriages. This will also be discussed in this paper.
Social scientist, Norbert Elias, examines in part two of his book, The Civilizing Process, the development of manners and the subsequent ‘civilizing’ of Western Europe since the middle ages. This journey in time is an attempt to understand what actually happened to humanity during several transitional periods. Elias perceives the development of western civilization in three historical stages. (From the middle ages with a progression to the renaissance (extended to 1750) and finally to modern day society) Each society of the three stages had it’s own standards of behavior, which influenced the individual to act in a certain “accepted” way. A correlation was also found between the sudden appearance of words in a language and the transitional periods between each historical stage of the civilizing process. Meaning, as people change and grow, so to does society. In essence, Elias is speaking of the maturity of a people.
Since UAE is a great layout to apply some of the stratification such as Bourdieu’s theory of Habitués and Weber’s the theory of Typology of classes, and Marx’s theory of class division based on economy, the productive system is significant and the deterministic to all other aspects in the society (Chan & Goldthorpe, 2007). I will use UAE citizens as a case study to see whether the economic powers are given and created to the UAE Citizen to expresses their economic powers through the economic opportunities (the instruments) or if the UAE citizens have a cultural influence into creating their economic identity segmentation as the way to distinguish themselves from the others.
Since these traditions have become apparent through centuries they are customary and have a tendency to lack individualism, as the group among which a person lives is seen as more important over the individual. In many parts of the world today, you can examine such cultures and see the ways that individuals offer themselves to family and community life.

Paul de Man once said, “Modernity exists in the form of a desire to wipe out whatever came earlier, in the hope of reaching at least a point that could be called a true present, a point of origin that marks a new departure.” But what is he really trying to say? Modernity takes out the old and brings in the new, continually upgrading to something else? Modernity appears as a concept of change. It most commonly refers to the social conditions, processes, and discourses resulting from the Age of Enlightenment. The concept of modernity captures the progress of societies, from primitive civilizations, which evolved gradually through discrete stages, reaching a modern age characterized by industrialization and capitalism, concluding in the current, post-modern state of globalization which shapes contemporary society with ever increasing coercion. Modernity can be placed into many different time periods. There are two, however, that are the most relevant: Early modernity and Classical modernity. Early modernity consisted of theorists such as Immanuel Kant, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Adam Smith and Alexis de Tocqueville. Classical modernity consisted of theorists such as Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim, and Max Weber. Many theorists have defined their own form of “modernity” which will be discussed throughout this paper.
Most contemporary historians define the European early modern period from around the beginning of the sixteenth century, up until the commencements of the French Revolution of 1789. The ambiguity inherent in this apparent catch-all period is problematic, and invokes much debate and disagreement among historians. For the purpose of expediency, this paper will have its modernizing genesis in the thoughts of Mitchell Greenberg writing in the Journal for Early Modern Cultural Studies. Greenberg states there was a common modernizing compulsion right across Europe during this time period ‘…marked by both a gen...
When talking about the concept of modernity, most people will probably think such concept is related to the contemporary era they live in where many advanced technology present in everyday life. In this so-called modern era, people from different regions and cultural backgrounds share many similar characteristics, such as their daily technology or civilization, general knowledge and science, and even the way they dressed. In fact, many characteristics or values that are different with those shared contemporary characteristics or values are often labelled as “traditional” or “alternative”. Some people believed that the beginning of modernity was marked by the age of Enlightenment where rationalism prevailed. Nevertheless, others believe that the seed of modernity had been planted even before such era. Using Stuart Hall’s work, The West and the Rest: Discourse of Power (1995) as primary reference, this essay will try to explore the root of modernity which dated back to the European exploration and colonialism era. In this essay, the concept of modernity will be mainly viewed as a cultural phenomenon caused by the domination of European values over other cultures throughout the world which results in the universality of the modern societies.
