Modern garden design for today’s urbanites
Let’s face the fact. Not everyone has sprawling lawns or acres of farmland to give a free reign to their inner creative. Many urbanites are left with a tiny terrace or perhaps a vacant window space to enjoy the pleasures of modern landscaping. For them, it becomes extra hard to bring up the plants when there is a dearth of sunshine, quality soil and sufficient space. Yet, with some amount perseverance these difficulties can be overcome.
Locate a space in front yard, patio or rooftop where you can begin cultivating your modern garden. If you do not have vacant spots in any of these areas you will have to buy suitable containers for an indoor garden. Containers must have a hole on the lower part of the pot to drain away the excess water. Checkout the garden tools needed for you. It is better to purchase good quality soil, compost, mulch and fertiliser from any local gardener’s supply
American Green has entertaining anecdotes, but should be considered more of a light read than as an authoritative work of non-fiction. This book may be enjoyed by environmentalists who want to know more about the impact that lawns have on the environment or for someone who truly is obsessed with his or her lawn and wants to learn about others who share this obsession. Steinberg’s goals may have been lofty, to prove a nationwide obsession, but his arguments and assumptions created a book that cannot be taken seriously.
Mother Nature has provided her tools since the beginning of time. One particular herb I want to discuss with you is Torilis Nodosa, also known as Knotted Hedge Parsley. Knotted Hedge Parsley is a plant that branches out at the base, low and spreading. They have five small white flowers, each that are in compact, compound umbels that come from the leaf axes. It is native to parts of Europe, especially the Mediterranean Basin and it is known elsewhere, such as North America, as an introduced species and a common weed. They spread out in all areas of the world, including residential lawns that grow in the Spring and Summer, which is May through August. They will also grow all year in colder climates.
Tastefully laid out in grass intersected by broad gravel walks, and planted with a great variety of trees, shrubs and flowers, botanically arranged. The Arboretum, as these gardens are designated, is much frequented, and has already produced a perceptible effect in improving the appearance and demeanour of the working class.
The victory garden or home garden was something that was highly popular during World War I and II. People would grow their own produce to help with the local food supply and to ease pressure on the local economy. At that time, almost one third of vegetable that were produced in the United States came from people’s home gardening (Wikipedia.org). Since then, there has been a massive decrease in the home garden. Store bought produce had become common place and as a result people have stopped growing their own food. However, by encouraging home gardening, communities can have sustainable, more nutritious produce readily available.
Growing from its humble beginnings as an ash dump in the late 1800's, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden has come to represent today the very best in urban gardening and horticultural display. The Brooklyn Botanical Garden blooms in the middle of one of the largest cities in the world. Each year more than 750,000 people visit the well-manicured formal and informal gardens that are a testament to nature's vitality amidst urban brick and concrete. More than 12,000 kinds of plants from around the globe are displayed on 52 acres and in the acclaimed Steinhardt Conservatory. There's always something new to see. The Brooklyn Botanic Garden offers a variety of public programs all year long. Tours, concerts, dance performances and symposia are always on the roster, as well as special one-time events that feature elements of the Garden at their peak. Each spring the Brooklyn Botanic Garden celebrates the flowering of the Japanese Cherry Trees with our annual Sakura Matsuri (Cherry Blossom Festival), and each fall is spiced up with our multicultural Chili Pepper FiestaA few of the "Many Gardens within a Garden" include the Children's Garden, tended each year by about 450 kids, ages 3 through 18; The Cranford Rose Garden, exhibiting more than 5,000 bushes of nearly 1,200 varieties; The Herb Garden, with more than 300 varieties -- "herbing" is apparently taking the country by storm as people rediscover medicinal, culinary, and other uses; and The Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden, a beautiful creation featuring a Viewing Pavilion, Waiting House, Torri, shrines, bridges, stone lanterns, waterfalls, pond, and miniaturized landscape.
On the other hand, the garden itself within The Secret Garden can be classified as a cultivated natural therapeutic landscape. What makes the garden truly remarkable as a therapeutic is its role in Mary’s coming of age, considering that prior to Mary’s exposure to the garden she was raised without an appropriate adult role models but nonetheless reached emotional maturity. In addition, the garden is considered a true therapeutic landscape due to its role in healing not only Mary, but also Colin and Archibald
The garden archetype is clearly portrayed in the Irish legend Deirdre and the Sons of Usna. The legend chronicles the life of a young girl named Deirdre who was cast away from her kingdom at a young age, and sent to live with the King`s nurse as it was said that she would bring misfortune upon the kingdom. She is sent to live with the nurse in a small house made of natural materials and that had a roof of green sods in a hidden glen, which is similar to a garden or paradise. She and the nurse lived in
It was decided, then, that planting a garden would be my summer project. My mother and I planned for it to be located behind our garage, in a sunny area of our otherwise shady backyard. With my mom's help, I planted an assortment of vegetables: tomatoes, onions, potatoes ('A potato is a tuber.' 'It's a what?'), and green beans.
The first images of the garden are seen through the exaggerated imagination of a young child. “” are as “ as flowers on Mars,” and cockscombs “ the deep red fringe of theater curtains.” Fr...
In this paper I will be comparing and contrasting to major garden styles. One arises from Kamakura period of Japan the “Saihō-ji” garden and another derives from Song Dynasty in China the “Master of the Nets Garden.” I Choose these gardens because I felt that the features and style used are distinctive, in the sense of religion, culture and nature come together to create these gardens. The style that is used in these gardens are not used anywhere else. Which led me to be interested in gaining more knowledge about them, in this paper you will see that both gardens have similar influences when come to the structure but since they have cultural differences the gardens turn out be more different then similar. I will give brief history on both periods in time when these garden styles developed. As well how they were designed and who designed during that time, and what kind of style did the garden capture.
The history of healing gardens was first recorded in the twelfth century, at a monastery in Clairvaux, France. St. Bernard credited the benefits of a hospice garden, to its green plants, fragrances, privacy and birdsong to being therapeutic in healing of the soul. The history of healing gardens continued to be successful as plant based activities were introduced in veteran’s hospitals during World War II to be used as rehabilitation service for veterans that were wounded.
Nurturing plants helps children learn about the wonders of nature. If you don't have space for a garden, a small window planter can bring opportunities to explore.
How to create an environment suitable for human living when resources are limited is a challenging problem for modern society. My strong interest in photography and art has compelled me to become especially observant toward the relationship between human beings and the environment. I have come to realize that the environment we live in has suffered much damage from pollution and lacks competent planning, making it difficult to find beautiful scenery to photograph or sketch. I began to think that I could make use of my artistic gift, concern about, and interest in the environment by entering the field of landscape design and putting my effort into beautifying our surroundings. Therefore, after graduating from high school, I entered the Department of Landscape Architecture at ABC University.
